“Free” can mean limited voices, a trial, personal use only or a restricted feature set. Preset counts also do not measure realism: conventional pitch and robot effects are different from AI voice conversion.

2. Voice.ai — best for AI voice transformation
Voice.ai is the specialist choice when you want an AI-generated or AI-converted character rather than a simple pitch, echo or robot effect. - Windows-focused support.
- A smaller effect and soundboard ecosystem.
- System-wide routing can affect other applications.
Use the official vendor page for the current installer and compatibility information rather than third-party download sites.
5. Voxal Voice Changer — best for custom effect chains
Voxal applies real-time microphone effects, custom chains, presets, background sounds and hotkeys. NCH lists Discord compatibility and Windows and macOS downloads. Its free edition is limited to non-commercial home use; commercial creators and users needing full functionality need the applicable paid license. Important version qualification
NCH’s published history shows a macOS version 10.00 uploaded May 5, 2025, while the Windows history displayed there is older. Do not describe Voxal as uniformly frequently updated; check the current release information at NCH’s version page.

EaseUS VoiceWave is aimed at Windows users who want a modern interface, many presets and compatibility beyond Discord. A 2026 comparison reports approximately $14.95 per month, $29.95 per year or $39.95 lifetime, plus a free tier. Verify current plans at the official product page before buying.
Who should choose it
It is worth considering when a current lifetime offer fits your budget. It is a poor fit for macOS, Linux or mobile users, and a large preset library does not automatically produce natural voice conversion.

8. Discord’s built-in voice effects — best no-install option
Some current third-party coverage describes voice filters in a path similar to Settings → Voice & Video → Microphone → Voice Filters. Availability, labels and rollout can vary by platform, account and client version, so verify the menu in your own Discord installation. How to route a voice changer into Discord
- Download the installer from the vendor’s official website and install its virtual audio component if offered.
- Open the voice changer and choose your physical microphone as its input.
- Enable an effect and confirm that you can hear or meter the processed signal inside the app.
- In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Set the changer’s virtual microphone or audio cable as Input Device.
- Keep your physical headphones or headset selected as Output Device.
- Use Discord’s microphone test before joining a call.
- If the effect is clipped, muted or flattened, adjust Discord’s processing controls as described below.
Voicemod settings
Start with Voicemod Virtual Audio Device (WDM) or Voicemod Virtual Microphone as input and headphones as output. Voicemod recommends manual input sensitivity and disabling Noise Suppression; Echo Cancellation and Automatic Gain Control may also need to be disabled when they damage the effect. Try the Standard audio subsystem first and Legacy if the connection fails. These are troubleshooting recommendations, not universal requirements.
Voice.ai settings
Open Voice.ai, select the physical microphone, enable the changer, then select Microphone Array (Voice.ai Audio Cable) in Discord’s Voice & Video input menu. The exact device label can depend on the installation.
Fix common failures
Discord hears your normal voice
- Open the changer before Discord.
- Confirm the effect works inside the changer.
- Return to User Settings → Voice & Video and explicitly select the virtual microphone.
- Restart Discord if the device is absent.
- Check Windows sound inputs and microphone permissions.
- Repair or reinstall the virtual component only through the vendor’s official installer.
Voicemod states that it must remain open to feed its virtual microphone; see its connection troubleshooting guide.
The app changes your voice but Discord does not
Discord’s Noise Suppression, automatic input sensitivity, Echo Cancellation or Automatic Gain Control may be removing or distorting the processed signal. Disable them one at a time, test again and try the alternate audio subsystem if your changer documents one.

- Check that the app is installed and running.
- Confirm Windows recognizes the virtual device and it is not disabled.
- Review microphone permissions.
- Check whether security software blocked the driver.
- Consider whether a recent operating-system update reset the device.
Echo or feedback
Use headphones, not speakers. Route the changer’s output to the headphones and avoid selecting a virtual Line device as the output. This follows Voicemod’s documented setup guidance.
The game uses the wrong microphone
Games often have their own input selector. Choose the same virtual microphone in the game, or configure Windows per-app audio; changing Discord’s input does not automatically change every application.
Push-to-talk conflicts
Test voice activation first, then push-to-talk. Avoid assigning the same key to Discord push-to-talk and an effect toggle until the basic route works.
AI audio is delayed or unnatural
Try a less complex model, a clean microphone signal and lighter Discord processing. Model mismatch, language, system resources and cloud processing can all affect timing and clarity.
