Trove adds voxel building to an RPG adventure. Starbound and Core Keeper are worthwhile adjacent picks, but both are 2D rather than direct matches for a 3D block-world game.

Best voxel and block-building games, ranked
1. Minecraft — best overall for open-ended block building
Minecraft’s official overview describes a game built around creating, exploring, and surviving in a block-based world, with platform-specific features and cross-play options. Its open-ended approach makes it the easiest first recommendation if you want to decide for yourself whether to build, explore, or focus on survival.
Check the edition and platform before buying: supported device families and features differ, and cross-play is not a blanket promise that every version plays together. The official overview explains the platform groups and features.

2. Dragon Quest Builders 2 — best for a guided story and structured building
Square Enix’s block-building RPG combines construction with a campaign, giving players quests and story goals to organize their building. It is a good fit if a purely open-ended sandbox leaves you unsure what to do next.
The PlayStation product page describes a single-player campaign and an online building mode for up to four players. That figure applies to the mode described on that page; check the product details for your platform and region for current availability and requirements.

3. Trove — best for voxel RPG progression and shared adventure
Trove’s official FAQ calls it an open-ended voxel adventure that combines gathering, building, RPG elements, quests, and procedurally generated worlds. It also says the game offers more than a dozen unique classes, making it the pick here for players who want character progression alongside building.
The FAQ lists several platform families, but that does not by itself establish cross-play between them. Confirm regional platform availability and the current state of the live service before choosing Trove.

4. Starbound — best 2D space-exploration alternative
Starbound’s official press kit describes procedurally generated planet exploration, construction, crafting, and a story campaign. It also says all content is available in online drop-in/drop-out co-op.
Starbound is a side-view 2D sandbox, not a 3D voxel-world equivalent. Choose it for space exploration and building in a different perspective, rather than for a Minecraft-style 3D block environment.
Rank #4
5. Core Keeper — best adjacent top-down mining sandbox
Core Keeper’s Steam listing describes a 1–8-player mining sandbox with building, combat, crafting, and farming. Its top-down 2D presentation makes it a looser fit for a strict voxel ranking, but it is a strong adjacent option if mining and cooperative exploration matter more to you than a 3D block world.

| Game | Building and structure | Perspective | Play style and co-op details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Open-ended block sandbox | 3D | Building and survival; official overview lists cross-play capabilities by platform group. |
| Dragon Quest Builders 2 | Block building organized around a campaign | 3D | Single-player campaign; PlayStation page describes online building for up to four players. |
| Trove | Building alongside quests and RPG progression | Voxel adventure; the FAQ does not specify a perspective here. | Gathering, procedurally generated worlds, and more than a dozen unique classes; confirm regional availability and live-service status. |
| Starbound | Construction, crafting, and a story campaign | Side-view 2D | Online drop-in/drop-out co-op, according to the official press kit. |
| Core Keeper | Building within a mining sandbox | Top-down 2D | Steam listing describes a 1–8-player game with combat, crafting, and farming. |
Start with the kind of building experience you want: choose Minecraft for freedom, Dragon Quest Builders 2 for quests and campaign structure, or Trove for RPG progression. If you are open to 2D, Starbound puts construction in a space-exploration setting, while Core Keeper centers mining and cooperative sandbox play.
For co-op, verify the exact platform, edition, region, and mode before purchasing or inviting friends. A game appearing on multiple platforms does not guarantee that those platforms can play together.
Are Starbound and Core Keeper voxel games?
They are included as adjacent recommendations, not direct 3D voxel matches. Starbound uses a side-view 2D format, and Core Keeper is top-down 2D. The closest strict matches in this shortlist are the games centered on 3D block building or explicitly described as voxel adventures.
