Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A Minecraft tripwire can trigger a spoken real-world alarm, but it does not control the alarm directly. In Andy Forest’s 2015 Make: project, a tripwire sends a redstone signal to a nearby ComputerCraft computer; a Lua program then makes an HTTP request to a Spark Core, which activates a voice module and speaker. The build is best read today as a historical example of linking an in-game event to physical hardware—not as a currently supported parts-and-software recipe.
How the tripwire triggers a real-world alarm
The signal passes through three stages: Minecraft redstone, a network request, and a microcontroller output. The player crosses string stretched between two tripwire hooks. One hook sends a redstone signal to the back of a nearby ComputerCraft computer. Its Lua program listens for that redstone event and, when the back input is active, sends an HTTP POST to the Spark device’s alarmOn cloud function. The Spark Core raises digital pin D5 for one second; D5 is connected to the voice module’s PLAYE input, which plays the recorded message through a speaker.
That network link is an important part of the design: the tripwire does not directly switch the physical alarm. The ComputerCraft computer translates an in-game redstone event into an internet request, and the Spark Core translates that request into an electrical output.
What the original project requires
Make: lists a Spark Core microcontroller, an ISD1820-style voice recording module, male-to-female jumper wires, a speaker, and a computer running Minecraft. The article gives Amazon item B008B4A2QO as an example of the voice module; present availability and specifications for that listing were not established. Check the actual module’s voltage requirements and pinout before connecting it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Controller: Spark Core, the project’s original microcontroller. Particle now identifies it as discontinued.
- Voice module: an ISD1820-style board capable of recording and playing speech.
- Speaker and wiring: speaker leads connect to the module’s SPEAKER screw terminals; jumper wires connect the module to the controller.
- Game setup: Minecraft, Forge, and ComputerCraft, using the versions specified in the original instructions.
The project describes connecting the module without soldering. Its wiring is VCC to 3V3, GND to GND, and PLAYE to D5; the speaker wires go to the voice module’s SPEAKER terminals. These are the original project’s connections, not a guarantee that every similarly named module or replacement controller uses the same voltage or pinout.
What software the 2015 instructions use
The Make: instructions target Minecraft 1.7.10, Forge for 1.7.10, and ComputerCraft 1.73. They also caution that mod compatibility can lag behind Minecraft releases. These are historical version requirements, not evidence that the combination works with current Minecraft or mod releases. Check compatibility for the exact game, Forge, and ComputerCraft versions you plan to use before assembling the hardware.

On the Spark Core
The original firmware registers a cloud function named alarmOn, configures D5 as an output, sets the pin high, waits one second, and then sets it low. Its loop() is empty because the device waits for a cloud request to invoke the function.
Particle’s [Core API reference] marks the Spark Core as discontinued and says Device OS 1.4.4 is the last version usable with it. Particle’s [CLI guidance] also says the current Particle CLI does not support discontinued platforms such as Core. Particle notes in its [product lifecycle policy] that end-of-support hardware is not guaranteed to work with official developer tools; discontinued devices may still connect to Particle Device Cloud, but are outside Particle’s service-level agreement, customer support, and limited hardware warranty.

On the ComputerCraft computer
The Lua example builds a URL for the Spark device function, waits for os.pullEvent("redstone"), checks redstone.getInput("back"), and submits an HTTP POST when that input is active. The example includes a device ID and access token. Do not publish a real token in code, screenshots, or a shared project: someone who has it may be able to control the Spark device.
For current Particle API use, the [Cloud API guide] recommends sending API tokens in an Authorization header. It says query-parameter authentication is unavailable for accounts created after December 4, 2024, with a documented exception for requests to older products. The Make: example uses an older access-token approach, so anyone adapting its request should consult the current authentication guidance and keep credentials private.

What to know before attempting a rebuild
The Spark Core is not a sensible default for a new build: it is discontinued, and the original game and mod versions are old. The available documentation does not establish a drop-in replacement controller or a currently compatible Minecraft-to-hardware setup. Before buying parts or writing code, verify both ends of the signal path:
- Confirm the game-side versions. Check that your chosen Minecraft release, Forge version, and ComputerCraft version work together and that the ComputerCraft computer can receive the relevant redstone event.
- Choose a supported controller. Confirm that its supported tools and network interface can receive the kind of request your game-side program can send. No direct replacement for the Spark Core is specified by this project.
- Match the electrical interface. Check the controller’s output voltage and the voice module’s supply and trigger-pin requirements. Do not assume that a different controller can safely use the original 3V3-to-VCC and D5-to-PLAYE wiring.
- Protect credentials. Keep API tokens out of public code and screenshots, and use the authentication method currently documented for the service you choose.
How to adapt the idea to other triggers or robots
The project names pressure plates, switches, buttons, and minecart pressure plates as other possible redstone sources. If one of them produces an input the ComputerCraft program can detect, it can serve the same role as the tripwire in the signal chain.

Make: also suggests adapting the approach to robots and other Arduino-programmable gadgets, but does not provide or test a robot build. Treat that as a design direction, not a ready-made extension: a robot would need a controller and motor-control hardware appropriate to its motors, as well as a verified way to accept the trigger path. The useful transferable idea is the separation between an in-game event, a network message, and a physical output—not a proven parts list for a robot.
