Tripledot Studios announced the purchase of AppLovin’s mobile-gaming business on May 7, 2025, and the deal closed on June 30, 2025. The often-repeated “$800 million” figure was an approximate headline value, not an $800 million cash payment. The transaction transferred 10 studios and their game portfolio to Tripledot in exchange for cash and Tripledot equity, while AppLovin retained a minority interest in Tripledot and refocused on advertising technology.
What the transaction actually was
Tripledot bought AppLovin’s mobile-games operating business—not AppLovin Corporation itself. The assets included game studios, publishing operations and associated franchises. AppLovin’s advertising, monetization and software businesses remained separate.
Tripledot announced the agreement as an approximately $800 million acquisition on May 7, 2025. AppLovin later confirmed that the sale closed on June 30, 2025, so it should be described as completed rather than pending.
The closing announcement described consideration of $400 million in cash, subject to closing adjustments, plus equity representing approximately 20% of Tripledot’s fully diluted equity at closing. AppLovin therefore became a minority shareholder in the privately held buyer.

What Tripledot acquired
AppLovin identified 10 studios in the transferred portfolio:
- Athena Studio
- Belka Games
- Clipwire Games
- Leyi
- Lion Studios
- Machine Zone
- Magic Tavern
- PeopleFun
- Zenlife Games
- Zeroo Gravity
The portfolio included titles such as Hexa Sort, Wordscapes, Clockmaker, Cooking Madness, West Game and Project Makeover. These examples come from AppLovin’s transaction description; the deal was a business and portfolio transfer, not simply the purchase of one publisher or a guarantee that every listed title had an identical legal ownership arrangement.
That distinction matters. A studio, a publishing label, a franchise and an individual game are different assets. The acquisition gave Tripledot control of the divested gaming operation and its associated teams and properties, while specific contractual rights can vary by title.
Why the price is described in different ways
There are several legitimate numbers because they describe different stages or valuation methods.

| Figure | What it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately $800 million | Announced headline transaction value | Tripledot’s May 7 announcement; described as roughly half cash and half equity |
| $400 million cash plus approximately 20% equity | AppLovin’s description of closing consideration | AppLovin’s June 30 completion announcement; cash was subject to closing adjustments |
| $715.6 million | Final consideration reported for accounting purposes | AppLovin’s June 30 Form 8-K: $430.6 million cash plus Tripledot shares valued at $285 million |
The $715.6 million figure in the SEC filing should not be treated as proof that either company misrepresented the deal. Headline transaction value, closing adjustments, private-company share valuation, accounting methodology and changes to the financing terms can produce different reported totals.
How the financing changed before closing
AppLovin’s quarterly filing for the period ended March 31, 2025 described the original agreement as $400 million of cash consideration plus Tripledot ordinary shares representing approximately 20% of Tripledot’s fully diluted equity. The cash component was initially split into:
- $150 million payable in cash at closing.
- A $250 million secured promissory note.
Tripledot expected to use debt to finance part of the cash purchase price, according to the March 2025 Form 10-Q. On June 30, the parties amended the agreement so Tripledot could pay the relevant amount in cash instead of issuing the secured note. AppLovin’s 2025 annual filing records that change.
The result was a cash-and-equity transaction, but not an all-cash acquisition. The equity component also belongs to AppLovin and its relevant subsidiaries under the transaction structure; AppLovin’s public shareholders did not receive individual Tripledot shares.

Why AppLovin sold its game studios
AppLovin said the divestiture would streamline the company around its core advertising business and related software opportunities. Its continuing operations include advertising technology, user acquisition, monetization tools and AI-driven marketing infrastructure for app businesses.
Directly operating game studios is strategically different from supplying the technology that helps apps acquire users and sell advertising. By selling the gaming portfolio, AppLovin exchanged control of game-development assets for cash and an ongoing minority interest in Tripledot. That removes the cost and management complexity of running studios while preserving some exposure to Tripledot’s future performance.
AppLovin treated the Apps Business as discontinued operations because the sale represented a strategic shift with a major effect on its operations and financial results, as detailed in its June 30 Form 8-K.
Why Tripledot wanted the portfolio
Tripledot’s rationale was scale and diversification. The acquired studios add established live games, development teams, publishing experience and a wider geographic footprint, particularly in the United States and Asia.

In its announcement, Tripledot said the combined operation would comprise 12 studios across 23 cities, reach approximately 25 million daily active users and produce annual gross revenue approaching $2 billion. Those are Tripledot’s stated post-acquisition figures, not independently audited results. The company also said no single game would generate more than 10% of total net revenue, a diversification claim that reduces reliance on any one title if it holds.
The potential advantages
- Immediate access to established games and existing audiences.
- More development and live-operations talent.
- Greater geographic and genre coverage.
- More scale for publishing, analytics, cross-promotion and user acquisition.
- A broader revenue base than a portfolio built around only a few games.
The integration risks
- Managing 10 studios with different cultures, tools and production processes.
- Maintaining content updates and marketing for mature live-service games.
- Absorbing higher operating complexity while keeping teams productive.
- Facing app-store policy changes, user-acquisition costs and advertising-market volatility.
- Paying a price that assumes continued engagement with titles whose popularity can decline.
What changes for studios and employees
The transaction transferred the gaming portfolio and its studios to Tripledot, and Tripledot said it would welcome the associated teams. The cited transaction announcements do not provide a detailed post-closing workforce plan, permanent employment guarantees or a schedule of reporting-line and branding changes.
That means layoffs, retention packages, studio closures and reorganizations cannot be inferred from the acquisition announcement alone. Any later staffing or organizational development needs its own dated evidence.
What players should expect
New ownership does not automatically shut down the acquired games. In practice, Tripledot can decide whether to continue development, alter monetization, combine support operations, change live-service schedules or retire a title. Players should therefore distinguish ownership transfer from a promise of unchanged service.

What the deal says about mobile-game consolidation
This is a scale transaction in a business where success depends on expensive user acquisition, data analysis, advertising, live operations and frequent content updates. Owning many games can spread portfolio risk and make cross-promotion more efficient. It can also concentrate exposure to the same app-store rules, advertising cycles and retention pressures.
For AppLovin, the transaction separates its advertising infrastructure from direct game ownership. For Tripledot, it creates a much larger operator whose challenge is turning a collection of studios into a coherent portfolio without damaging the games that justified the purchase. The strategic outcome will depend less on the announcement headline than on retention, content investment and integration execution after closing.
Common misconceptions
“Tripledot paid $800 million in cash.”
No. The approximately $800 million was the announced total value. The closing description combined cash with approximately 20% Tripledot equity, and AppLovin later reported $715.6 million using its accounting valuation.
“Tripledot bought AppLovin.”
No. It bought AppLovin’s mobile-gaming business and studios. AppLovin remained a separate public company.
“AppLovin left mobile software entirely.”
The divested Apps Business was the game operation. AppLovin’s continuing strategy centers on advertising and software infrastructure for app businesses.
“The deal proves Tripledot is a $2 billion company.”
Tripledot said the combined operation could approach $2 billion in annual gross revenue. That is a company-provided figure, not an independently audited valuation.
