On March 10, 2017, Twitch announced that it would turn Curse’s desktop client into the Twitch Desktop App: a hub intended to bring streams, gaming communities, mod management and, eventually, game purchases together. The ambition was to reach into Discord’s social territory and Steam’s game-library territory. Twitch later removed the app’s social features, sold CurseForge to Overwolf and deprecated the desktop app on April 30, 2022. It was a real platform strategy, but not a lasting Twitch-built alternative to Discord and Steam.
What Twitch actually rebranded
Twitch acquired gaming-community company Curse in August 2016. The March 2017 announcement concerned Curse’s desktop application—not every Curse property and not Discord or Steam. Twitch redesigned the client under its own brand as the Twitch Desktop App, with CurseForge’s game mods and add-ons remaining part of the product.
The announcement came on March 10, 2017, and said the app would officially launch on March 16. Twitch later presented the full version on August 10, after a beta period. Those dates describe different milestones, not competing accounts of a single launch. GamesBeat’s March 2017 report covered the rebrand and launch plan; Twitch’s August 2017 announcement described the full release.
The larger plan: make Twitch a gaming hub
Twitch was trying to extend its relationship with players beyond a browser tab and a live broadcast. A desktop client could keep viewing, chat and friends in one installed application, while Curse brought existing community and mod-management capabilities. Twitch also wanted the client to connect watching games with discussing, launching and buying them.

In the March announcement, the planned desktop experience included a game library for titles purchased through Twitch. That fit Amazon’s broader effort to link game purchases with livestreams: a viewer might discover a game through a creator and then buy and launch it through Twitch. GamesBeat described the goal as a place to buy, launch, discuss and broadcast games. This was the strategy Twitch was proposing, not evidence that the app became a major storefront.
How the app aimed at Discord
Twitch’s Discord-like pitch was persistent communication for gaming communities, including times when a creator was not live. Twitch’s August feature announcement described servers, text and voice rooms, friend synchronization, and voice and video calls. The earlier plan also highlighted Whispers, screen sharing and activity sharing.

| Twitch Desktop App feature | What it was meant to do |
|---|---|
| Friends and friend sync | Connect Twitch users and bring friends into the desktop experience. |
| Servers with text and voice rooms | Give communities persistent places to talk outside a live stream. |
| Voice and video calls | Let friends communicate directly from the client. |
| Screen sharing and activity sharing | Share what someone was doing or viewing with others. |
That feature overlap did not make the products equivalent. Twitch’s social functions were attached to its creator-and-viewer network; the app’s announcement did not establish parity with Discord’s community scale, moderation practices, bot ecosystem or culture. Twitch was positioning itself as an option for gaming communication, not demonstrating that it had displaced Discord.
How the Steam comparison worked
The Steam comparison was about games as well as social features. Twitch planned a library for games bought through Twitch and a way to launch them from the desktop app. The idea was to connect a stream or creator recommendation to a purchase, then keep the game accessible in the same client.

That was an attempt to enter Steam-adjacent territory, not a claim that Twitch had built a Steam replacement. Steam was an established storefront and launcher; Twitch was adding a proposed store-and-library role to a service centered on livestreaming. The 2017 announcement and coverage support the ambition, but do not establish a comparable catalog, distribution infrastructure or level of adoption.
What the full 2017 app included
Twitch’s August 10, 2017 announcement described a Windows and Mac app that combined Twitch viewing and account features with social functions and CurseForge mods. Its listed capabilities included:

- POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once

- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
- Twitch livestreams, video on demand, clips and chat.
- Subscriptions and Bits support, plus a dark mode.
- Community servers with text and voice rooms, friend synchronization, and voice and video calls.
- CurseForge mods and add-ons for games including World of Warcraft, Skyrim and Minecraft.
In other words, the app was more than a Twitch-stream viewer, but its components had different roles: Twitch content and social tools, CurseForge mod management, and a planned game library. The library and purchase ambitions should not be confused with proof of a mature storefront.

The app’s later history shows how its bundled proposition came apart. The following dates mark a retreat from the combined desktop hub, rather than a formal statement by Twitch that the overall strategy had failed.

- June 2020: Twitch sold CurseForge assets to Overwolf. CurseForge’s mod-management role moved out of the Twitch desktop product; Overwolf’s CurseForge page identifies the service under its current vendor.
- April 30, 2022: Twitch deprecated the Twitch Desktop App. The date appears in the update to Twitch’s original full-release announcement. It is a historical product, not an app readers should seek out as a current Twitch download.
The outcome is best understood as a short-lived experiment in platform integration. Twitch used Curse’s client and mod ecosystem to test a broader desktop presence, but the app did not endure as a combined rival to Discord and Steam. Twitch’s streaming service continued separately, while CurseForge became a separate Overwolf product.
