Choose Twitch if your content is built around live sessions and a Twitch-native community. Choose YouTube if you want livestreams to sit alongside long-form videos or Shorts in one publishing library. Neither platform is a guaranteed winner for discovery or income. Your content mix, audience habits, monetization stage and willingness to manage two communities matter more than a blanket platform ranking.
How to choose between Twitch and YouTube
Start with what you want viewers to do after a stream ends. If the live session is the main product, Twitch is a natural fit. If streams are one part of a broader video channel—with uploads and Shorts as well as live broadcasts—YouTube can keep those formats together. That distinction is a useful starting point, not a claim that either platform will automatically grow your audience faster.

Live-first versus a wider video library
Twitch may suit creators whose schedule, interaction and community activity revolve around live sessions. YouTube may suit creators who want a livestream to coexist with searchable or evergreen uploads and Shorts. Consider whether you plan to edit streams into videos, publish between broadcasts, or make live viewing the central experience.

Horizontal and vertical viewing
YouTube’s live-streaming help describes horizontal and vertical live formats and notes that feature support differs by format. Check the current YouTube live-streaming help for the features available to your setup. Twitch announced Dual Format streaming for all streamers on June 17, 2026; the same announcement says 2K (1440p) streaming is for Partners and Affiliates. These are format and feature details, not proof of generally superior video quality. Twitch also said that 70% of new Twitch viewers come to Twitch on mobile; that is Twitch’s own June 2026 figure, not an independently verified industry statistic. What simulcasting adds
Streaming on both services can widen where viewers can watch, but it also means handling chats, moderation and community expectations across platforms. That extra workload is a practical consequence of running two destinations, not a platform rule. Before simulcasting, read Twitch’s current terms and check any signed agreement that applies to your account.

Can you stream on Twitch and YouTube at the same time?
Twitch’s current Terms of Service allow simulcasting subject to three conditions: the Twitch experience must not be worse than the experience on another service; you must not direct Twitch viewers to leave for the simulcast; and you must not combine other-platform activity on your Twitch stream. Check the live terms and any agreement you have signed before relying on this permission, because applicable terms can change.
Operationally, plan for a separate moderation approach and make sure your production setup can deliver the formats and interactions you intend on each service. Do not assume that permission to simulcast means each platform’s features, chat or viewer experience will work identically.

Monetization: distinguish access to tools from eligibility for payouts
Twitch
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Twitch said eligible streamers globally gained access to tools including Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges and Channel Points. Access to tools is not the same as payout eligibility: Twitch said Partner or Affiliate status is still required for payouts. The announcement lists revised Affiliate milestones of four hours streamed, four different streaming days, at least three average concurrent viewers on four different days, and 25 followers. Treat these as the requirements Twitch published on that date, and verify the current Twitch announcement before planning around them; program criteria can change.
YouTube
YouTube has an expanded Partner Program entry point for earlier access to eligible fan-funding and Shopping features in available regions, with feature-specific eligibility still applying. The usual threshold listed on its expanded YPP overview is 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Check whether the program and the specific features you want are available in your country.

Full ad-revenue eligibility is a separate, higher threshold. YouTube’s current YPP overview, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, along with policy and account requirements and channel review. For that watch-hour threshold, livestream hours from streams that are unlisted, deleted or not converted to VOD do not count. Check YouTube’s current page for the rules that apply to your channel.
These thresholds describe different programs and features; they are not a like-for-like forecast of how much a creator will earn. No universal income winner follows from the published eligibility criteria. Use your own account analytics and audience response to assess what is working.

How to make the decision using your own channel
- List the formats you can sustain. Decide whether your realistic schedule is live-only or includes edited videos and Shorts between streams.
- Identify where your audience participates. Look at actual viewing, chat and returning-viewer patterns in your niche rather than relying on platform-wide assumptions.
- Set a monetization milestone. Compare the current eligibility and regional availability for the specific features you want, not just headline subscriber or follower counts.
- Test a workflow you can maintain. If you simulcast, account for Twitch’s terms and the extra work of serving and moderating two communities.
- Review your own results. Compare audience retention, returning viewers and revenue in your own analytics. Published platform features do not establish a universal discovery or earnings advantage.
