They cannot be named because of their ages, the Metropolitan Police said.
What happened at the Gants Hill restaurant?
The attack took place at Indian Aroma, a busy Indian restaurant in Gants Hill, Ilford, on Friday, 22 August 2025. The Metropolitan Police said a group entered carrying machetes, poured petrol across the floor, furniture and people, then lit a taper. The resulting fireball left two people with critical burn injuries and several others with severe injuries, according to the police account.
A police update in September 2025 said six people—three women and three men—had been injured, with two still in hospital with life-changing injuries at that time. These are descriptions from different police updates at different stages; the September figure reflects the investigation update then, while the later conviction announcement described the critical burns and severe injuries.
What were the teenagers convicted of, and what sentence did they receive?
Following a seven-week trial at the Old Bailey, the two boys were convicted of arson with intent to endanger life and possession of an offensive weapon, the Metropolitan Police said. The Standard reported that each received a 10-year prison sentence on 2 October 2026.

How did police link the group to the attack?
According to the Metropolitan Police, investigators traced the suspects’ movements using CCTV, traffic cameras and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) records. The police said a stolen Toyota Prius travelled from south London to Barkingside and Gants Hill, and that officers later found the car and recovered a petrol-canister spout and mobile phones.
Police also said they recovered clothing, including trainers and a balaclava, that matched CCTV images. These are investigative details as described by the Met; they are not an independent examination of the evidence presented at trial.

Did police identify who ordered the attack or establish a motive?
The Metropolitan Police said the motive remained unclear. The Standard’s sentencing report quoted Judge Grieve as saying: “I have no doubt that you were carrying out this operation on the direction of some older and more experienced criminal who has not been identified… but you did so with cold blood.” That is the judge’s assessment as reported by The Standard; the available accounts do not identify an alleged organizer or establish a motive.
Detective Inspector Emma Sharp, who led the investigation, said the group had tried to “outmanoeuvre the police and avoid the consequences of their pre-mediated violence,” and that the outcome showed detectives could unravel complex incidents and secure justice. This was the investigator’s characterization, not a court finding.
