Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) and Modern Warfare III (2023) became standalone downloads on July 29, 2025. The change let owners download and launch either game directly from their platform library instead of accessing it only through the main Call of Duty install. It was an installation and access update, not a new gameplay-content release for either game.
Which Call of Duty games changed?

What happened to the old Call of Duty files?
Legacy MWII and MWIII files inside the main Call of Duty experience were scheduled for automatic removal on August 7, 2025. That date has passed. At the time, players who redownloaded either game could manually remove its legacy content before the cleanup to avoid keeping duplicate data. These were historical instructions, not a current deadline.

Did players keep their progress and unlocks?
Yes. Activision said existing owners kept everything they had unlocked. Achievements and trophies earned through the main Call of Duty experience carried over to the standalone versions, and progress earned in a standalone title could sync back to the main install.
Did the change affect Warzone or DMZ?
Warzone operators and weapons from MWII and MWIII were not affected by the installation change. The DMZ Beta remained free-to-play and hosted within the MWII install. Campaign, Multiplayer, and other premium MWII modes still required MWII ownership.
