Type CC Codes in February 2025: CMS ICD-10-CM and MS-DRG Meaning

For February 2025, the relevant CMS FY 2025 ICD-10-CM file window runs October 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. CC and MCC are MS-DRG classifications, not diagnoses; verify each code in the applicable manual and check exclusions.

“Type CC codes” is ambiguous, but if you mean the CMS diagnosis-code list used for Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs), February 2025 falls within the FY 2025 ICD-10-CM file period effective October 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. CMS classifies some diagnosis codes as CC (Complication or Comorbidity) or MCC (Major Complication or Comorbidity) for MS-DRG purposes. These labels are not diagnoses, and a code’s status depends on the applicable version and coding context.

What “Type CC codes” means here

The phrase “Type CC” does not, by itself, identify a jurisdiction or code set. This article uses the most relevant official interpretation available: ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes with a CC or MCC classification in CMS’s MS-DRG system. If you meant a different coding scheme, this list context may not apply.

In the CMS context, CC and MCC are severity classifications associated with diagnosis codes. They are not clinical diagnoses or substitutes for the provider’s documentation. The MS-DRG v42.0 definitions manual includes a section titled “List of CC and Major CC codes,” with code descriptions and links to exclusions. For example, it lists specified Ehlers-Danlos syndrome codes as CC and congenital diaphragmatic hernia as MCC. Consult the manual and its applicable version for any individual code: CMS FY 2025 IPPS rule materials, including the MS-DRG v42.0 definitions manual.

Which ICD-10-CM version applies in February 2025?

CMS identifies the FY 2025 ICD-10-CM files and guidelines for encounters and discharges from October 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. February 2025 is within that window. CMS lists a separate update for April 1 through September 30, 2025, so “2025” should not be treated as a single unchanging code set. Use the files effective for the relevant encounter or discharge date, available from the CMS ICD-10 code page.

How to verify a CC or MCC classification

  1. Confirm the coding context. Check that you are looking for CMS MS-DRG CC/MCC status, rather than another meaning of “CC.”
  2. Use the applicable ICD-10-CM files. For February 2025, select the FY 2025 files effective October 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025.
  3. Check the MS-DRG manual version. Find the code in the “List of CC and Major CC codes” and read its description and linked exclusions. State the manual’s version when reporting the result.
  4. Apply coding context. A classification label alone does not determine how a case is coded or grouped; principal and secondary diagnosis context and exclusions can matter.

CC versus MCC—and why exclusions matter

The CMS manual distinguishes CC from MCC classifications; they are not interchangeable labels. Its list also supplies exclusions, so a code should not be read in isolation. CMS policy discussion describes exclusions as a way to address closely related conditions and duplicative or inconsistent coding, and to help distinguish paired complicated and uncomplicated DRGs. That explanation appears in the FY 2026 rule discussion and is general context—not a source for February 2025 code status. Use the applicable FY 2025 manual for code-level decisions.

The MS-DRG v42.0 manual surfaced for this topic is hosted under a FY 2025 proposed-rule path. Identify it as v42.0 rather than presenting it as an independently verified final February 2025 list. When comparing reference versions, check the effective date, code description, CC/MCC designation, and exclusion logic. These materials alone do not establish a payment amount comparison.
