Ubisoft Japan canceled its planned Tokyo Game Show 2024 online program on September 24, two days before it was due to air. The company cited “various circumstances.” Criticism of Assassin’s Creed Shadows was already public, but the available announcement does not establish that criticism caused the cancellation.
What Ubisoft canceled—and when
The cancellation applied to Ubisoft Japan’s official online program, not to Tokyo Game Show 2024 itself. The approximately 50-minute broadcast was scheduled for September 26 at 3 p.m. local time; Ubisoft announced its cancellation on September 24, according to GAME Watch.
Ubisoft’s stated explanation, as quoted in that report, was “various circumstances.” The cited announcement offered no more specific official reason.
What the stream was expected to include
GAME Watch reported that the program was set to cover four games:

Was the cancellation because of criticism of Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
That connection is not established by the available statements. The timing placed the canceled stream amid public criticism of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but Ubisoft Japan’s reported explanation was only “various circumstances.” It did not name the criticism as the cause.

The criticism had received a direct response from the game’s development team weeks earlier. In a July 23 message to the Japanese community, the team acknowledged positive reactions as well as criticism, including from Japanese players, and apologized for concern caused by some promotional material. It described the game as historical fiction and discussed creative liberties in its portrayal of Yasuke and its two protagonists. The team wrote: “Assassin’s Creed Shadows is first and foremost, designed to be an entertaining video game that tells a compelling, historical fiction set in Feudal Japan.” The full statement is available from Ubisoft News.
Fast Company later placed the TGS and preview cancellations in the broader context of anti-DEI backlash and difficulties at Ubisoft. That is the publication’s analysis, not confirmation of Ubisoft’s reason for canceling the stream. Fast Company’s report should be read as contextual interpretation rather than an official explanation.

Were Assassin’s Creed Shadows press previews canceled too?
Separately, Insider Gaming reported on September 24 that press previews of Assassin’s Creed Shadows had also been canceled. The outlet said Ubisoft had not commented on that separate cancellation at the time. It should not be treated as a confirmed explanation for the TGS program decision.
