Ubisoft has canceled its Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. The decision was part of a January 21, 2026 announcement that discontinued six games. On January 30, 2026, the Prince of Persia team said development stopped because it could not reach the quality it wanted, and that continuing would have required more time and investment than Ubisoft could responsibly commit. Ubisoft said the decision does not mean it is leaving the franchise.
Is the Sands of Time remake still coming out?
No. Development of the remake has ended, and the project will not be released in its planned form. Ubisoft’s January 30 statement is direct on this point: “We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.” The sources available for this article date from January 2026, and they contain no later update that reverses the decision.
Why Ubisoft stopped development
Two separate explanations apply to this decision, and they operate at different levels. Keeping them apart makes the announcements easier to read.
The game-level reason
The Prince of Persia team gave its reasoning in the January 30 statement: “While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit.” In plain terms, the team judged that the game was not good enough to ship and that finishing it to an acceptable standard would have cost more time and money than Ubisoft was willing to spend. The statement does not describe specific technical problems, budget figures or schedule slips.

The portfolio-level reason
The January 21 company release describes a broader reset. Ubisoft said it reviewed its content pipeline during December 2025 and January 2026 while finalizing a new operating model. It discontinued six games that did not meet what it called enhanced quality standards and more selective portfolio-prioritization criteria. Founder and CEO Yves Guillemot framed the changes this way: “While these decisions are difficult, they are necessary for us to build a more focused, efficient and sustainable organization over the long term.”
The January 21 release sets out the portfolio logic. The January 30 statement explains why this particular project did not clear the bar. Ubisoft did not publish a single document linking the two in causal terms, so readers should treat the remake’s cancellation as one result of the wider review rather than a fully separate decision.

The six discontinued games
Ubisoft named only one of the six games. The other five were not identified in the announcement.
| Category | Number discontinued | Named in the January 21, 2026 release? |
|---|---|---|
| Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake | 1 | Yes |
| Unannounced projects, including three new IP | 4 | No |
| Mobile title | 1 | No |
| Total | 6 | One of six named |
Because the release does not name the unannounced projects or the mobile title, any list of “other canceled Ubisoft games” circulating online is speculation unless Ubisoft confirms it. Readers should be cautious about titles attributed to this announcement by unofficial sources.

Other changes in the January reset
The cancellations were one part of a larger set of changes. According to the January 21 release:
- Seven other games received additional development time. Ubisoft did not name them in the release.
- One unannounced title moved from fiscal year 2026 to fiscal year 2027. This is the only schedule change the release describes in detail.
- Five Creative Houses will form the core of a new structure, supported by a Creative Network, Core Services and a reshaped headquarters. Ubisoft said the model would begin operating in early April 2026. The release describes this as a plan; it does not confirm the rollout had been completed by the time of writing.
Cost targets
Ubisoft also set out financial goals alongside the reset. These are targets and estimates from the company, not results it has already reported.

The January 30 statement says the team considers the franchise to matter: “Prince of Persia as a universe and a legacy continues to matter deeply to us, and this decision does not mean we’re stepping away from the franchise.” That is the company’s stated position. It does not announce a new Prince of Persia project, a release date or a replacement remake. Anyone waiting for a new Prince of Persia game should watch Ubisoft’s official channels rather than assume a return date.

What this means if you were planning to play it
- Do not look for a preorder. Because development has stopped, there is no product to buy or reserve for the remake.
- Ubisoft+ is a subscription, not a route to this game. The company describes it as giving access to a catalog of Ubisoft games and DLC. The sources do not say whether the remake was ever going to be included, so do not assume it would have been available through the subscription.
- Original Sands of Time games are a separate question. The cancellation concerns the remake only. Whether earlier Prince of Persia titles are available on a given platform depends on the storefront and the publisher’s current listings, which these sources do not cover.
What the sources establish and what they do not
The January 21 release is the primary source for the six cancellations, the unnamed-project categories, the seven additional development allocations, the Creative House structure and the cost targets. The January 30 Prince of Persia team statement is the primary source for the reasons given for the remake’s cancellation and for the franchise language. Neither source names the other five canceled projects, gives a development cost for the remake, or explains what the team would have changed to reach its quality goal.
The launch window Ubisoft gave for the remake before cancellation is not confirmed in the sources reviewed for this article, so it is omitted here.
