That sequence is documented; the reason for the closure is not. Ubisoft placed the shutdown in a company-wide restructuring and cost-reduction program, while CWA Canada questioned the timing and sought information. The available accounts do not establish that unionization caused the closure or when Ubisoft made the specific decision.
What happened, and when?
The key dates are close together, but they describe different events: workers first filed to unionize, the Labour Board later certified their bargaining unit, and Ubisoft then announced the studio closure.

Did Ubisoft close Halifax because workers unionized?
The public information summarized here does not establish that. The three-week interval between certification and the closure announcement is clear, but timing alone cannot show why the company acted or when it reached its decision.
CWA Canada challenged the timing but carefully stopped short of alleging that unionization caused the closure. In its January 7 response, the union said: “While we are not saying that this is what happened here, we will be demanding information from Ubisoft about the reason for the sudden decision to close.” The union also said it would pursue legal recourse to protect workers’ rights.

Ubisoft’s January 21 statement supplied a broader business context: it described the Halifax closure as part of “the effort to streamline operations and adapt to evolving market conditions,” alongside changes at other studios. That statement does not identify when the Halifax decision was made or establish its specific motive.
What is known about the workers and jobs affected?
The figures refer to different counts at different points, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. CWA Canada described the certified bargaining unit as about 60 workers in December 2025. In its April 2026 settlement announcement, it said 71 employees had worked at the studio, including 61 union members. These are union-reported figures.

A former employee, Jon Huffman, told CWA Canada the closure came as a surprise to staff and front-line managers, who were working on ongoing and new projects. That account describes employees’ experience; it does not determine when management made the decision.
What happened after the closure announcement?
CWA Canada Local 30111 initiated proceedings concerning the closure before the Nova Scotia Labour Board on January 13, according to the union’s chronology. CWA Canada later reported that workers approved a negotiated settlement on April 14. The union did not disclose the settlement terms, and its announcement does not say that the Board issued a decision on the merits of whether union activity caused the closure.

What the public record establishes—and what it does not
