Yes, Ubisoft shut down XDefiant—but “closing three studios” needs qualification. Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024 that it was discontinuing development of the free-to-play shooter. New downloads, registrations, and purchases stopped immediately. Existing players could use the servers until June 3, 2025; as of August 18, 2026, XDefiant is permanently offline.
The original announcement said Ubisoft San Francisco and Ubisoft Osaka would close, while the Sydney production site would be ramped down. Later Ubisoft corporate documents described the action as the closure of three production studios, which explains the shorthand used in many headlines.
What Ubisoft announced
Ubisoft’s community announcement appeared on December 3, 2024. The company’s formal press release is dated December 4, so both dates appear in official material without representing different decisions. Ubisoft described the move as discontinuing development and “sunsetting” XDefiant. The announcement is available from Ubisoft’s community news channel.

- Season 3 was still planned as the game’s final major content release.
- Servers were scheduled to remain online for eligible existing players until June 3, 2025.
This was not an announcement that the game was merely paused or unsupported. It was a planned service sunset.

Is XDefiant still playable?
No. The June 3, 2025 server deadline has passed. XDefiant had no offline mode, so closing its online service removed the only way to play it. Reinstalling the client before the deadline did not create a permanent, offline copy.

Which studios and teams were affected?
The original December announcement made a specific distinction among the sites involved.

Ubisoft also said about half of the worldwide XDefiant team would transition to other Ubisoft roles. The figures therefore should not be presented as a confirmed final total of 277 layoffs: the company described 143 departures in San Francisco and 134 likely departures across Osaka and Sydney.

Later corporate reporting used broader language, referring to the closure of three production studios in high-cost locations. That later wording supports “three studios” as an attributed corporate description, but it does not change what the original announcement said about Sydney. The formal announcement is in Ubisoft’s December press release.
Why did Ubisoft end XDefiant?
Ubisoft said XDefiant had an encouraging launch but did not retain enough players over time to compete sustainably in the highly competitive free-to-play first-person-shooter market. In the company’s account, the game’s performance, profitability and market conditions did not justify continued significant investment.

Ubisoft also said it was becoming more selective about research-and-development spending. Those are the company’s stated reasons; they do not establish a single outside explanation such as a particular rival, bug or launch-management decision being solely responsible.
What happened to player purchases and refunds?
The shutdown announcement promised a full refund for the Ultimate Founder’s Pack and for purchases made during the preceding 30 days. Ubisoft said those refunds should be processed automatically within eight weeks and directed players to support if a refund failed to arrive.

A regional FAQ supplied more precise limits:
- Specified virtual-currency and downloadable-content purchases made from November 3, 2024 onward were covered under the announced program.
- The standard Founder’s Pack and Founder’s Pack Elite were not necessarily treated like the Ultimate Founder’s Pack.
- Refund processing was intended to run through the platform used for purchase, such as a console or PC storefront.
- Virtual-currency and DLC purchasing stopped on December 3, 2024.
Do not assume every XDefiant transaction qualified or that every refund was issued directly by Ubisoft. Players who believe an eligible refund was missed should contact the purchasing platform and, where necessary, Ubisoft support. This special shutdown program was separate from Ubisoft’s ordinary store policy at store.ubisoft.com/us/refund-policy.
How the shutdown fits Ubisoft’s broader restructuring
XDefiant’s sunset was both a product decision and part of a wider cost-reduction effort. Subsequent Ubisoft reporting connected the site changes with reducing fixed costs, concentrating investment and taking a more selective approach to development. Additional restructuring followed after the December announcement.
That context does not mean XDefiant alone caused every job or studio change. Nor did Ubisoft say it was abandoning live-service games altogether. Its corporate materials continued to describe Games-as-a-Service as part of the company’s strategy while judging XDefiant individually unable to support further investment. Why “three studios closed” is an imprecise headline
There are two accurate ways to describe the event, depending on attribution:
- Original announcement: San Francisco and Osaka would close; Sydney’s production site would be ramped down.
- Later Ubisoft corporate wording: the company closed three production studios in high-cost locations.
The most exact reader-facing wording is therefore: Ubisoft ended XDefiant, closed its San Francisco and Osaka studios, and ramped down the Sydney production site. Calling this “the closure of three studios” is acceptable when clearly attributed to Ubisoft’s later corporate description, but it should not erase the original distinction.
