Ubisoft’s current terms do not set one universal inactivity deadline. They say the company may close an account that meets specific inactivity criteria described in an advance notice, and promise at least 30 days to act before closure. Ubisoft’s 2023 reassurance that it had not deleted accounts inactive for less than four years—and did not intend to delete accounts with purchased games—was a statement about its practice at that time, not a permanent guarantee in the current terms.
What Ubisoft clarified—and what changed
The backlash followed reports of an inactivity email and concerns that Ubisoft might close accounts holding purchased games. In 2023, Ubisoft told PC Gamer that it had never deleted accounts inactive for less than four years and that accounts with purchased games were not intended for deletion. Ubisoft also said its process was implemented to comply with GDPR Article 5.1.e, which concerns limiting data retention.
Ubisoft later revised Article 8 of its terms to explain the circumstances in which inactive accounts may be deleted and the steps users can take to prevent closure. The current international terms describe accounts that have been inactive for a long time and meet specific criteria, with those criteria to be detailed in the closure notice. They do not make the old four-year figure or the purchased-games statement a general, ongoing promise.
| Question | Ubisoft’s 2023 clarification | Current international terms |
|---|---|---|
| How inactivity is assessed | Ubisoft said it had not deleted accounts inactive for less than four years, as of its 2023 response. | Specific criteria are described in the notice; the terms do not state one universal inactivity period. |
| Purchased games or subscriptions | Ubisoft said accounts with purchased games were not intended to be deleted. The statement should be read as part of that historical response. | The cited current terms do not promise a blanket exemption based on an attached game or subscription. |
| Notice and steps to stop closure | The quoted 2023 practice statement did not establish the current notice process. | At least 30 days’ prior notice, including consequences and steps to keep the account open. |
| Personal data and game access | The backlash response concerned account deletion in the context of data-retention rules. | Ubisoft’s privacy policy says some data may be deleted after prolonged inactivity without affecting the game library; voluntary account closure is a separate process that removes access to games and other account-linked services. |
Will Ubisoft delete games you bought if you stop playing?
Ubisoft’s 2023 statement was that accounts with purchased games were not intended to be deleted. But the current international terms use inactivity criteria described in an individual notice and do not state a universal purchased-game exemption. It would therefore be misleading to treat the 2023 statement as a current guarantee.

The privacy policy draws an important distinction: deletion of some personal data after prolonged inactivity can occur “without affecting your game library.” That is not the same as closing the account. A voluntary account closure, by contrast, means losing access to the account, games, progress, Ubisoft online services, open Ubisoft Store orders, and links to external accounts.
How long can a Ubisoft account remain inactive?
The current international terms do not specify a single number of months or years that applies to every account. Instead, they refer to a long period of inactivity and specific criteria that Ubisoft says it will explain in the email or notification announcing an upcoming closure.

The four-year figure belongs to Ubisoft’s 2023 response: the company said that, in practice, it had not deleted accounts inactive for less than four years as of that time. It describes reported past practice, not the current terms’ universal threshold.
What the 30-day notice means
Under the current international terms, Ubisoft says it will give at least 30 days’ notice before closing an account. The notice is supposed to warn of the impending closure and its consequences, and explain what steps can keep the account open. The period is a minimum notice window, not a promise that every inactive account will receive a closure notice after a fixed length of inactivity.

What to do if you receive a closure email or notification
- Check that the message is genuine. If uncertain, navigate to Ubisoft’s official support site independently rather than following an unexpected link.
- Read the deadline and criteria in the notice. The current terms say the specific inactivity criteria and steps to retain the account will be provided there.
- Follow the stated steps before the deadline. If the instructions are unclear or you cannot complete them, contact Ubisoft support promptly and keep a copy of the notice and your correspondence.
- Do not confuse inactivity-related data deletion with account closure. If the message says the account itself will close, treat it as an access issue and seek clarification before the notice period expires.
Does personal-data deletion automatically remove your game library?
No—not according to the distinction in Ubisoft’s privacy policy. It says certain data may be deleted after prolonged inactivity without affecting the game library. A user-requested full account closure is different and carries loss of access to the account and its games. The relevant action and notice matter: limited deletion of personal data should not be assumed to mean the same thing as closing the Ubisoft account.
Ubisoft’s legal update also said users had until March 20, 2026 to accept revised terms. That acceptance deadline does not itself establish an inactivity period or say that accounts became eligible for closure on that date.
