In November 2025, Ubisoft took a related step with Teammates, a short first-person-shooter experiment that put AI companions and voice commands into playable scenarios for a closed group of testers.
What Ubisoft’s Neo NPCs were
NEO NPCs were designed to let players talk naturally with characters whose replies could reflect their identity, knowledge, motivations, emotional state and the situation in the game world. Ubisoft presented the project as its first player-facing generative-AI NPC prototype at GDC 2024. The announcement described an experiment in interaction, not a standalone game or confirmed feature for a commercial Ubisoft title.
The distinction matters: the goal was not to make characters improvise without limits. Ubisoft’s writers and creators established each character’s background, knowledge, personality, conversational style and goals; the language model generated dialogue within those human-authored foundations. Ubisoft’s 2023–24 Universal Registration Document says the AI did not create the characters themselves.
How the Neo NPC technology was assembled
Character and dialogue systems
Ubisoft Paris engineers and scriptwriters worked with Inworld AI’s Character Engine and large-language-model technology. Inworld supplied technology for building character backgrounds, knowledge and conversational behavior; Ubisoft supplied the creative foundations and integrated the system into its prototype. Ubisoft’s GDC 2024 announcement describes the collaboration.

Speech and facial animation
The prototype also used NVIDIA Audio2Face for real-time facial animation from speech. NVIDIA describes Audio2Face-3D as technology that converts streaming audio into facial blendshapes for lip-sync and facial animation. It is part of NVIDIA ACE for Games, a broader set of tools and integrations rather than a single model: NVIDIA ACE for Games.
Ubisoft’s public materials describe real-time interaction and animation, but do not establish that all model inference ran on a player’s device. “Real-time” should not be read as proof that the prototype worked offline or without server infrastructure.
How it differs from a dialogue tree
A conventional dialogue tree offers authored lines selected through predefined choices or conditions. Neo NPC explored a more open exchange: a player could phrase a request in their own words, and the character could generate a response rather than select one fixed line. In principle, that response could account for the character’s perspective and current context, allowing conversation to continue beyond a short menu.

That does not mean scripting disappears. The prototype’s design was hybrid: people defined who the character was and what it could know, while generative systems improvised dialogue within that framework. This can make interaction more flexible, but it also makes consistency, pacing and control harder to guarantee than with fully authored lines.

Ubisoft presented Neo NPC as an interactive prototype for exploring whether conversational characters could remain believable, grounded in the game world and responsive to player actions. It was intended to investigate how natural-language interaction might affect immersion and emergent narrative, while retaining developer control. Ubisoft said the technology still needed substantial development before it could be implemented in a game. See the company’s Neo NPC explainer.
A convincing conversation is not, by itself, proof of a useful game character. Dialogue generation and gameplay action are separate challenges: an NPC might understand a request linguistically yet fail to move, fight, obey an objective or respect mission scripting reliably. The 2024 demonstration did not establish that the system was ready for a full game.

How Teammates extended the experiment
On November 21, 2025, Ubisoft announced Teammates, a short playable first-person-shooter research experience from the same broad effort. Rather than focusing chiefly on conversation, it explored AI-assisted gameplay. Players took the role of a resistance fighter in a dystopian setting, moved through an enemy base, searched for five missing team members, recovered memories from former teammates and fought enemy squads alongside two AI-enabled companions, Pablo and Sofia.
Jaspar and the voice-command interface
Teammates included Jaspar, an in-game voice assistant. Ubisoft said players could use natural vocal instructions to highlight enemies or objects, ask about story and lore, change settings, use accessibility-related functions, pause the game and give tactical directions. The AI companions could respond to commands in gameplay, including combat and puzzle-solving situations.

That establishes a playable experiment and limited private testing—not a public downloadable game or a commercial release. The company’s Teammates announcement and press release describe the project and test.

What generative AI might add to games
Ubisoft’s prototypes point to possibilities, not benefits proven in a released game. If the systems can be made consistent and dependable, they could support:
- Companions that interpret varied instructions rather than requiring a precise command menu.
- Hints and tutorials that respond to what a player asks or is doing.
- Player-directed discovery of character knowledge and lore.
- Accessibility controls available through natural-language requests.
- More flexible mission interactions and emergent solutions, provided game rules still govern what can happen.
The test for these ideas is whether they improve play—not simply whether they produce more dialogue. An AI collaborator that can give a useful hint or reliably carry out a tactical instruction may matter more than one that can sustain a long conversation.

Latency and gameplay reliability
Speech recognition, language-model responses, speech generation and animation can introduce delays. A pause may be tolerable during exploration but disruptive in a firefight. Even a quick, fluent response does not guarantee that a companion will execute the requested action correctly or at the right moment. Ambiguous commands such as “cover me” could mean taking defensive position, suppressing enemies or following closely; the game needs a reliable way to interpret the intent and recover when it gets it wrong.

World knowledge and narrative control
A model can produce information that conflicts with canon, mission state or what a particular character should know. It might reveal a plot point early, contradict an authored scene or adopt the wrong tone. Guardrails and carefully designed character knowledge can reduce these risks, but do not make errors impossible. Human-authored foundations are a way to constrain improvisation, not proof that narrative control is solved.
Safety, voice rights and privacy
Player speech can include abusive or otherwise inappropriate content, so a commercial implementation would need input and output moderation, reporting, parental controls and region-specific compliance. It would also need clear rules for voice performances, synthesis, training and reuse. The Neo NPC announcement does not set out Ubisoft’s full policy on those matters.
Voice features also raise accessibility and privacy questions. Microphone interaction may help some players while excluding others; a finished game would need alternatives such as text input, remapping, subtitles and mute options. Players would need clear information about how voice recordings and transcripts are processed and retained.
Cost and infrastructure
Speech recognition, model inference, text-to-speech, animation and support can create recurring infrastructure costs. The burden depends on the implementation and scale, and Ubisoft’s prototype announcements do not disclose its total cost or deployment architecture. A studio would have to assess hosting, bandwidth, concurrency and support alongside the creative case for the feature.

What Ubisoft has announced—and what it has not
- NEO NPCs: A conversational-character prototype unveiled at GDC on March 19, 2024.
- Teammates: A short playable AI-assisted gameplay experiment announced on November 21, 2025 and tested with a few hundred players in a closed playtest.
- Commercial game availability: The cited announcements do not establish a public release of either project.
- Use in a named Ubisoft franchise: Ubisoft has not confirmed Neo NPCs or Teammates as a feature in Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six or another commercial title in these announcements.
The progression is from conversational NPC research toward companions that can participate in gameplay and respond to voice instructions. Whether that approach belongs in a finished game depends on a harder balance than novelty: characters must remain useful, reliable and recognizably authored while the systems operate within the game’s rules.
