Ubisoft did not fix every Windows 11 24H2 problem at once. The company deployed mitigations for Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, allowing Microsoft to lift the related upgrade safeguard on December 5, 2024. However, Microsoft separately listed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, and Odyssey under the affected-game warning.
As of Microsoft’s release-health information checked on August 18, 2026, the original Ubisoft issue is no longer listed as an active 24H2 problem, and Windows 11 25H2 is the latest Windows release. That makes this primarily a historical compatibility incident—but the distinction still matters if your PC remains on 24H2 or an older Ubisoft installation continues to crash.

What happened with Windows 11 24H2 and Ubisoft games?
After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, some players found that specific Ubisoft games crashed, froze, became unresponsive, displayed a black screen, or developed audio problems. The failure could occur when launching the game, during loading, or during active gameplay.

Microsoft described this as a compatibility problem affecting named Ubisoft titles, not a defect that made every PC game—or every Ubisoft game—unplayable. User complaints sometimes used broader wording, but that is not Microsoft’s technical characterization.

Microsoft responded by placing compatibility, or safeguard, holds on affected systems. A safeguard hold prevents Windows Update from offering a feature update to a PC known to be at risk. It does not repair the game, uninstall Windows, or roll back a driver.

The Assassin’s Creed entries were associated with safeguard ID 54437462. Microsoft separately identified a safeguard, ID 54580160, for Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

What did Ubisoft actually fix?
Star Wars Outlaws: temporary hotfix 1.4.1
Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws Title Update 1.4.0 announcement said that a temporary hotfix, version 1.4.1, had been deployed for players experiencing Windows 11 24H2 issues. Ubisoft also said it was continuing work on a more permanent fix.
That wording matters. Version 1.4.1 should be described as a temporary hotfix or mitigation, not proof that every crash was permanently eliminated. Ubisoft also warned that players could continue to experience performance issues. Read the original Ubisoft Title Update 1.4.0 announcement.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora: Title Update 1.2
Microsoft linked the mitigation for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora to Title Update 1.2. The available Microsoft material confirms that this was the relevant update for the 24H2 compatibility issue. It does not provide enough detail to identify the precise underlying defect, such as a particular Windows subsystem, driver interaction, or game-engine failure.
What did Microsoft change?
Microsoft’s safeguard system initially withheld Windows 11 24H2 from affected computers through the normal Windows Update channel. This was a deliberate protection mechanism: delaying the feature update was safer than offering it to players likely to encounter crashes or freezes.
On December 5, 2024, Microsoft said the safeguard hold covering Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora had been lifted after Ubisoft’s mitigations were deployed. Windows Update could take up to 48 hours to offer 24H2 again after the relevant game fixes were installed.

Is it safe to install Windows 11 24H2 now?
For the original 2024 incident, the safest rule was to follow Windows Update rather than bypass Microsoft’s compatibility controls:
- If you played Star Wars Outlaws or Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, install the relevant game update before accepting 24H2.
- If you played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, or Odyssey, do not force 24H2 while the safeguard hold remained active.
- Do not use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or Media Creation Tool to bypass an active hold unless Microsoft has cleared the specific compatibility issue.
The situation is different now. Microsoft’s release-health page, checked on August 18, 2026, no longer presents the original Ubisoft conflict among its active listed 24H2 issues and identifies Windows 11 25H2 as the latest Windows 11 version. Therefore, 24H2 should not be treated as the current rollout target in 2026. 1. Check your Windows version
Open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. You can also press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter. Confirm whether the system is running 24H2 or another Windows build.
2. Update the game completely
Open Ubisoft Connect or the platform where you installed the game and allow all pending updates to finish. Existing Star Wars Outlaws players should confirm that the build associated with the 1.4.1 hotfix was installed. Avatar players should install the update path associated with Title Update 1.2.
Installing Ubisoft Connect by itself is not a fix. Its relevance is that it can deliver and manage the game update.
3. Restart Windows
Restart after the game update. During the original incident, Microsoft said that Windows Update might need up to 48 hours to offer 24H2 after the relevant mitigation was detected. A restart can help refresh update detection, but it cannot override a separate compatibility block.

If Windows Update does not offer 24H2, do not immediately use the Installation Assistant, Media Creation Tool, registry edits, or other bypasses. An active safeguard exists because Microsoft believes the device may encounter the known problem. Forcing the update can reproduce the crash or freeze the hold was designed to prevent.
5. Repair the game installation
Use Ubisoft Connect’s file-verification or repair option if the game continues to fail after updating. This can address damaged or missing files, but it is general troubleshooting—not evidence that corrupted files caused the original Windows 11 compatibility conflict.
6. Update the graphics driver as a secondary step
Install a current driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel if the crash persists. Driver updates are reasonable troubleshooting, but the documented issue was a specific Windows/Ubisoft compatibility problem, not simply a graphics-driver failure. Avoid unverified third-party driver-updater utilities.

7. Establish whether 24H2 is really the cause
Check whether other games work normally and whether the failure is limited to one Ubisoft title. Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer may show repeatable application failures. Compare when the crashes began with the date Windows was upgraded.
Older Ubisoft games can crash on 23H2 or other Windows versions for unrelated reasons, including Ubisoft Connect authentication, DRM, overlays, shader-cache problems, corrupted files, unstable hardware, or other configuration issues. A crash in one title is not automatically proof that 24H2 is responsible.

A missing offer does not necessarily mean the Ubisoft fix failed. Possible explanations include:
- A safeguard hold is still active.
- Windows Update has not yet detected the game update.
- The PC has another unrelated compatibility block.
- The device is managed by an organization.
- Windows is offering a newer release instead.
- The game was uninstalled, but compatibility detection has not refreshed.
Wait for Microsoft’s compatibility system to clear rather than deleting registry entries or forcing the upgrade. During the original mitigation, Microsoft’s stated window for the offer to return was up to 48 hours.
