Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →ufat.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system DLL known as the FAT Utility DLL. If Windows reports that ufat.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker.
Historically, ufat.dll supports FAT filesystem utilities, including functions associated with formatting and checking FAT filesystems. It is normally located at:
%SystemRoot%System32ufat.dll
The file is part of Windows rather than a normal Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, .NET assembly, game library, or driver package. A program may mention it when Windows cannot load a required system component, but that does not prove the program itself owns the DLL.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.

Windows servicing can restore or replace protected system files. Start here before copying files or reinstalling unrelated runtimes.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the application or Windows operation that produced the
ufat.dllmessage.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. An update may repair the component store without immediately repairing every protected file, so restarting alone does not confirm that the underlying problem is fixed.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for replacement files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when it completes.
A successful result normally states that the restore operation completed successfully and that the operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not obtain the repair files, do not use a downloaded ufat.dll as a substitute. A matching Windows installation source may be required, using Microsoft’s documented repair-source procedure.

After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The result should say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart Windows and test the affected program again.
If you already know that the expected file is missing or damaged, you can scan that file specifically:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32ufat.dll
If SFC says it could not repair some files, review the result and continue to the recovery steps below. Repeating the same command without checking whether DISM succeeded usually does not add useful information.
When manually checking DISM and SFC results becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the normal repair path for a missing Windows component.
Fix 3: Check whether another application is reporting the failure
Time needed: 5–20 minutes.
A message containing ufat.dll may appear while launching an application, even when the application is not the owner of the Windows file. The message can also say that the “specified module could not be found” when another dependency required by the loading process is missing.
First determine when the error appears:
- If it appears during Windows startup or while using a Windows feature, focus on Windows repair.
- If it appears only when launching one program, repair or reinstall that program after completing Windows repair.
- If it appears after an application update, use that application’s own repair or rollback option.
- If it appears in a game launcher, use Verify files only if the launcher owns the affected files. Verification is not a replacement for repairing Windows components.
Where supported, repair the application through Windows:

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the app’s local settings or data may be removed.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher. Do not obtain ufat.dll from a file-collection website. If the application is the actual source of the damaged dependency, its official installer is the correct replacement source.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Security software may quarantine a system file after a detection or a false positive. Check the record before manually restoring anything.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
ufat.dllor related system activity. - Expand a detection to view its path, threat name, and action.
- Restore or allow the file only when the path is the expected Windows location and the file’s authenticity can be verified.
Do not restore a replacement downloaded from an untrusted source. If the detection suggests malware, update Microsoft Defender and run a full scan. For a persistent infection, use Microsoft’s offline scanning and recovery options rather than copying individual DLLs back into the system directory.
Fix 5: Verify the path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
The expected path is usually:
C:WindowsSystem32ufat.dll
The Windows directory may have a different name or drive letter if Windows was installed elsewhere. To check the file:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
ufat.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab when it is present.
- Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A Microsoft signature is useful evidence, but the path and signature should be considered together. A file with the right name in an application folder, temporary folder, or user profile is not automatically the genuine Windows component.
On 64-bit Windows, Windows maintains separate locations for native and 32-bit components. System32 is the normal name for native system files, even though the name can be confusing. Do not download both 32-bit and 64-bit copies and place them in different folders. The correct architecture depends on the Windows installation and the process loading the file.
Public inventories include versions from Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, including examples such as 10.0.10586.0, 10.0.14393.0, and 10.0.19041.1. These are historical samples, not a complete compatibility list. Do not replace a current file with an older version merely because the filename matches.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
ufat.dll is not itself a device driver. Driver installation should not be the first response to a missing system DLL. Consider it only when the problem began with storage-device errors, removable-media failures, or a damaged device installation.
To check devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. If the drive is failing, back up important data before troubleshooting further. The presence of a FAT-related DLL error does not by itself prove that a disk is damaged.

Time needed: 20–90 minutes.
Use recovery when the problem started immediately after a Windows update, software installation, cleanup utility, or suspected malware incident and DISM and SFC did not resolve it.

Try System Restore
- Open Start and search for Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal files. It may not be available if no restore point exists.
Use Windows recovery options
If Windows cannot boot normally or system files remain damaged:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Recovery in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Recovery.
- Use Advanced startup and select Restart now, or start from official Windows installation media.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Try Startup Repair, System Restore, or the appropriate reset or reinstall option.
Back up personal data first. An in-place Windows reinstall using official Microsoft media can repair system components while preserving supported personal files and applications, but read every screen carefully before proceeding.
Causes of a ufat.dll error
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted protected Windows file | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete update or component-store damage | DISM, possibly with a matching repair source |
| Damaged application installation | Repair or reinstall the affected application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history and verify the file |
| Wrong architecture or mismatched Windows build | Restore the correct component through Windows repair |
| Malware or unauthorized replacement | Defender scan and Windows recovery |
| Storage or filesystem damage | Back up data and investigate the drive |
What not to do
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because an error names ufat.dll. Those packages do not normally provide this Windows FAT utility component. Install or repair one of them only when the error specifically names a file from that runtime.
Do not run:
regsvr32 ufat.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM self-registration, such as DllRegisterServer. Nothing in the available ufat.dll metadata indicates that it is a self-registering COM server. The command may therefore report that the entry point was not found, and it will not repair a missing or corrupted Windows component.
FAQ
Is ufat.dll malware?
ufat.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows system location and has a valid Microsoft signature. A copy with the same name elsewhere should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Is ufat.dll related to FAT32 or removable drives?
Yes. Its documented historical role is connected with FAT filesystem utilities, including formatting and filesystem checking. That does not mean every ufat.dll error indicates a failing USB drive or FAT32 volume.
Should I copy ufat.dll into System32?
No. A random copy may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the Windows build. It may also hide a component-store, dependency, or application-installation problem.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
“Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named DLL itself. Complete Windows repair, then repair the application that displays the message.
When should I use regsvr32?
Only when the DLL’s documentation specifically says it is a COM self-registering server and provides the correct registration procedure. It is not a general DLL repair command and is not the normal fix for ufat.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen is a clean reinstall justified?
Use Windows Recovery, System Restore, or an in-place reinstall when DISM and SFC cannot restore system integrity, malware is suspected, or Windows cannot boot reliably. If only one application fails, reinstall that application first rather than reinstalling Windows.
