UFO 50 Review: A Broad Anthology, Not Just for UFO Soft Fans

UFO 50’s shared UFO Soft universe is optional context, not a barrier. Its genre-spanning 50-game anthology may appeal to curious players well beyond the fictional label’s fans.

Yes—UFO 50 can appeal even if UFO Soft’s fictional history means nothing to you. Its 50-game premise spans platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzles, roguelites, RPGs and more, so the real draw is the chance to find distinct kinds of games under one roof. The shared universe gives the collection a connective thread, but you do not need to follow its lore to approach it as a varied anthology.

What is UFO 50?

UFO 50 is a collection presented as the catalog of a fictional developer, UFO Soft. The official listings describe 50 games across a range of genres, while Nintendo’s description says recurring characters and sequels connect them within a shared universe. That framing gives the collection an identity beyond a menu of unrelated mini-games—but it does not make familiarity with the fictional studio a prerequisite.

The number is the collection’s stated premise, not a measure of how much any one game offers. The more useful question is whether you enjoy shifting among different genres and play styles, and whether you are willing to let individual games win you over on their own terms. Store descriptions establish the range and framing; they do not establish how consistently the games deliver or how they feel to play.

Is UFO 50 worth playing if you are not a UFO Soft or retro fan?

It is worth considering if variety is part of the appeal. A collection that moves between platformers, shooters, puzzles, roguelites and RPGs offers more routes into the experience than one built around a single genre. You can come for a familiar type of game without needing to care about UFO Soft, then explore the wider catalog if another entry catches your interest.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

The caveat is that breadth is not the same as uniform quality or depth. Fifty entries do not guarantee that every game will suit you, or that every one will feel like a complete, substantial experience. The available official descriptions support the collection’s range, but are not enough to make a firsthand judgment about controls, difficulty, pacing, or which games stand out. Treat UFO 50 as an anthology to sample, rather than assuming the count alone makes it essential for everyone.

Does the UFO Soft shared universe matter?

The fictional developer is a useful organizing idea: recurring characters and sequels make the catalog feel connected. That can add an extra layer for players who enjoy spotting relationships between games. But the connection is a bonus, not an entry requirement. The games are also presented as spanning different genres, so the collection has a clear appeal apart from following its fictional history.

  • Overcome varied enemies and obstacles, like Zombie Guys, Skelesaurus, Ukiki, and Monty Mole as you seek out hidden collectables; ESRB Content: Mild Cartoon Violence; Genre: Action, Platformer
  • Pass a Joy Con controller to a friend for 2 player cooperative exploration
  • Clad Yoshi in collectable, protective, handicraft costumes as he makes his way through each stage

PC or Switch: which version should you choose?

The choice is chiefly about platform and play context; the available store information does not establish a technical advantage for either version. Steam lists the PC release on September 18, 2024. Nintendo’s US store lists the Switch release on August 7, 2025 and identifies TV, tabletop, and handheld modes.

Option What the official listing establishes Best fit
PC / Steam Released September 18, 2024; the Steam listing includes single-player, shared/split-screen co-op, and PvP. Choose it if you want the PC release and the multiplayer modes listed on Steam.
Nintendo Switch Released August 7, 2025 in the US; supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, with one to three players on a single system. Choose it if you value the listed handheld, tabletop, or TV play options.

These storefront descriptions are not identical. Steam’s feature labels and Nintendo’s single-system player count describe their respective listings; do not assume that a mode or player count listed for one platform applies to the other.

Super Mario Odyssey - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Explore 3D kingdoms filled with secrets and surprises, including costumes for Mario and several ways to interact with environments
  • Mario's new friend, Cappy, lets you master new moves like cap throw, cap jump and capture
  • Visit astonishing new locales, such as the skyscraper-packed New Donk City, and run into familiar friends and foes as you try to save Princess Peach from Bowser's clutches and foil his dastardly wedding plans
  • Hand a Joy-Con controller to a friend to enjoy simultaneous multiplayer: Player 1 controls Mario while Player 2 controls Mario’s new ally Cappy
  • Unlock even more features with the exclusive new amiibo figures - Mario, Princess Peach and Bowser dressed in their wedding outfits

Can you play with other people?

Yes, but check the platform-specific listing before deciding how you plan to play. Steam lists shared/split-screen co-op and PvP. Nintendo’s US store lists one to three players on a single system. Those details establish multiplayer availability, but they do not mean every game in the collection supports every mode.

Should you play blind or use the companion guide?

Playing without a guide leaves you free to discover games and their secrets at your own pace. If you prefer hints, maps, or completion help, Fangamer’s separate UFO Companion guidebook is described as including tips, maps, secrets, original art, terminal codes, and checklists. It is an optional aid, not a requirement for understanding the collection.

Are physical Switch editions available?

Fangamer lists standard and deluxe physical Switch editions. Its deluxe edition includes a companion guide of more than 100 pages and printed extras. That is a different choice from buying the digital Switch version: the standard physical edition is the straightforward boxed option, while the deluxe bundle adds collectibles and reference material. Fangamer’s product pages establish that these editions exist, but stock can change, so check the retailer’s current listing before planning a purchase.

Verdict: a collection with more than one way in

UFO 50’s strongest case for players outside the UFO Soft fan base is its stated genre breadth, not an obligation to learn the fiction behind it. The shared universe can reward curiosity, while the range of game types gives newcomers several possible starting points. It is a compelling proposition if you enjoy sampling varied games; the 50-game label alone cannot guarantee that every entry will be for you.
