Start with this diagnostic checklist
uictrl.dll is usually an old third-party scanner-driver file, not a Windows component. If uictrl.dll is missing, Windows is normally trying to start scanner software whose installation is incomplete, quarantined, damaged, or incompatible with the current system.
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program shows the error: MiraScan, a TWAIN application, a vendor scanner utility, or another imaging program
- When it appears: at Windows startup, when launching the scanner program, or when beginning a scan
- The scanner model: check the label on the device and the name shown in Windows
- Whether the scanner software was recently removed, updated, or quarantined
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit: open Settings > System > About and check System type
- Whether the file is missing or merely failing to load: check the scanner program’s own installation folder, especially a folder named
SYSTEM
Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into C:WindowsSystem32. The strongest evidence associates uictrl.dll with old MiraScan scanner packages, including software used by Acer and BenQ-era scanners. It is commonly described as a 32-bit “Scanner Driver” DLL, but file metadata from third-party indexes is inconsistent, so the original package is more trustworthy than a filename match.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete scanner package
This is the most likely and safest fix when the error appears while opening scanner software.
Archived MiraScan packages place the file in a path similar to:

MiraScan...SYSTEMUICtrl.dll
Those packages also contain other scanner and TWAIN components. That matters because restoring only uictrl.dll can leave you with a second missing-file error or an unusable scanner.
Identify the scanner software
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl, then press Enter. - Look for entries named MiraScan, the scanner manufacturer, or a model-specific scanner utility.
- If you find the software, note its exact name and version if shown.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and check whether the scanner appears there.
- If the device is connected by USB, disconnect it until the installer asks you to reconnect it.
If the scanner is an older Acer or BenQ-era model, MiraScan is a particularly important lead. Other scanner packages can also use the same filename, so do not assume that every uictrl.dll belongs to the same product.
Remove the damaged installation
If the scanner program is listed in Apps or Programs and Features:
- Select it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the program has a Repair or Change option, use that before uninstalling:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > scanner program > Advanced options > Repair
- Classic desktop software: Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, right-click the scanner program, then choose Repair or Change
Repair is useful when the application is present but its private SYSTEM files were removed. If Repair does not restore scanning, uninstall it, restart, and reinstall the complete package.
Install the matching package
Use the scanner manufacturer’s support page, the original installation disc, or a known-good copy supplied with the device. Match all of these:
- Exact scanner model
- Windows version supported by the package
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- TWAIN or vendor utility requirements
- Any separate USB or chipset requirement listed by the manufacturer
Do not install a package merely because its archive contains a file named uictrl.dll. The same filename can occur in unrelated scanner software.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the scanner when instructed.
- Open the vendor scanner utility.
- Run a preview scan.
- Test the scanner from the application that originally produced the error.
A successful repair should start the scanner utility without the uictrl.dll message and should allow the device to initialize. Related files may also be restored, including WebUI.dll, scanctlS.dll, MiTwain.dll, and TWAIN_32.DLL. Do not copy those files individually either. Their presence is useful evidence that the complete package was installed.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A scanner DLL can disappear after security software removes or quarantines it. This is especially important if the error began immediately after a malware cleanup or security scan.
Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions for the scanner program or
uictrl.dll. - Expand a matching entry and inspect its location and detection details.
Only restore the file if all of the following are true:
- It came from the original, matching scanner installer
- The scanner software is legitimate
- The file path belongs to that scanner application
- A current security scan does not identify the installer or package as malicious
If Defender offers Restore or Allow on device, use those actions only after verifying the source. Microsoft documents these options in its Protection History guidance.
A safer approach is often to reinstall the complete scanner package after confirming that the installer is clean. Do not add an arbitrary downloaded DLL to an antivirus exclusion list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the error followed suspected malware, run a full scan before restoring anything:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Choose Scan now.
Fix 3: Check driver compatibility on Windows 10 or 11
Many scanners associated with MiraScan were designed for much older Windows releases. A package that worked on Windows XP may fail on current 64-bit Windows because of changes to driver signing, application architecture, permissions, and security.
Check the scanner in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the scanner, an unknown device, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version if available.
If Windows lists the scanner correctly but the vendor utility still reports uictrl.dll, the device driver may be installed while the application layer is damaged. Reinstall the complete scanner software rather than updating only the entry in Device Manager.
If Device Manager shows an unknown device:
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the manufacturer’s matching package.
- Reconnect the scanner when requested.
Do not remove unrelated USB devices or chipset drivers.

Try compatibility settings only for the installer or utility
If the manufacturer package is legitimate but refuses to start:
- Right-click the installer or scanner utility.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the oldest Windows version specifically indicated by the manufacturer or original documentation.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the installer requires it.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode can help an old user-mode installer or utility. It cannot make an unsupported kernel driver safe or functional. If the scanner still fails, use a compatible older Windows environment or replace the scanner rather than forcing old driver files into Windows system directories.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which device drivers are stale, but its scan is optional and the full version is needed for automated repair or installation. For this file, the manufacturer’s complete scanner package remains the definitive source.
Fix 4: Check whether the error names a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that uictrl.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when the DLL exists but one of its dependent files cannot be loaded.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify the application folder
- Find the scanner program in the Start menu.
- Right-click its shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut again if necessary and choose Properties.
- Read the Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
uictrl.dlland a nearbySYSTEMdirectory. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the General and Digital Signatures tabs if present.
If the file is present but the application still fails, do not copy another version over it. Reinstall the complete package so its related libraries and configuration are restored together.
A dependency problem can also result from:
- A partially removed scanner application
- A failed update
- A blocked file
- A 32-bit application being given the wrong architecture
- A missing TWAIN component
- A package that cannot run on the current Windows version
There is no evidence that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is the normal solution for this particular file. Install those components only when the scanner manufacturer specifically requires them and identifies the exact supported package.
Fix 5: Confirm the 32-bit and 64-bit situation
A 32-bit scanner program needs its 32-bit private DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not use the names of Windows system folders as a repair guide:
System32contains 64-bit system components on 64-bit WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows
Neither folder is the normal home for a private scanner DLL. uictrl.dll should ordinarily be beside the scanner software that loads it, or inside that software’s SYSTEM directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check the scanner program’s architecture:
- Open the scanner program’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details and Compatibility where available.
- Compare the program with the driver package supplied for the scanner.
Public metadata commonly reports uictrl.dll as a 32-bit DLL with version 1.0.1.4, but third-party records disagree about architecture and do not establish a universal build. Treat the copy in the original installer as authoritative.

Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They generally will not recreate a missing third-party scanner DLL, so use them when Windows has additional symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, unexplained system errors, or repeated component failures.
Install pending Windows updates and restart first. Then open an elevated terminal:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner again.
Microsoft’s SFC and DISM instructions recommend running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the scanner still reports uictrl.dll, return to the scanner-package repair. The problem is likely outside Windows’ protected files.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking system issues less repetitive by showing what its free scan finds; repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the matching scanner package remains the definitive fix for a missing third-party DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 uictrl.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A private scanner UI or runtime DLL normally loads from the scanner application’s directory and does not need COM registration.
Use regsvr32 only when the scanner manufacturer explicitly instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides the correct architecture-specific command. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
When the scanner is no longer supported
If the scanner has no current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver, the old package may simply be incompatible. In that situation:

- Use a compatible older Windows installation only if it can be isolated and maintained safely
- Consider scanning through a supported computer or replacement scanner
- Avoid downloading unsigned DLLs or driver packages from unverified sources
If the scanner works in Windows Scan or another imaging application but the vendor utility fails, the old utility is likely the problem rather than Windows’ basic scanning support. If no application can see the scanner, investigate the USB connection, Device Manager status, and hardware support separately.
System Restore can help if the failure began immediately after a driver installation or update:

Why standalone DLL downloads are a poor fix
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong scanner package
- The wrong architecture
- A mismatched version
- A file without the other TWAIN and scanner libraries it needs
There is no verified universal standalone download that makes uictrl.dll correct for every scanner. The reliable source is the original scanner manufacturer package or installation media matched to the exact model. Never place an unverified copy in System32 or SysWOW64.

FAQ
Is uictrl.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with third-party scanner software, particularly older MiraScan packages. It is not a normal Microsoft runtime or general Windows component.
Which scanners use uictrl.dll?
Archived MiraScan packages associate it with several older Acer scanner models, including the 310U, 320U, 340U, 620U, 640U, 640UT, 640BU, 640BT, 1240UT, 5100U, 3000U, 3300U, and 4300U. Match the exact model before installing anything.
Should I download `uictrl.dll separately?
No. Reinstall the complete scanner driver and utility package instead. A standalone file may be incompatible or may leave other scanner components missing.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The scanner application normally loads its private DLL from its own directory or SYSTEM folder. Copying it to a Windows system directory is unsupported and usually does not address the real cause.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file is present?
A dependency of uictrl.dll may be missing, blocked, or incompatible. Reinstall the entire scanner package rather than replacing only the visible DLL.
Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components, while uictrl.dll belongs to third-party scanner software. Run them when Windows has broader corruption symptoms.
Is the file from Canon?
Some third-party metadata indexes attribute a copy to Canon, but that attribution is not conclusively verified. Identify the scanner model and installer instead of relying on the filename or an index label.
Can I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for registration. A scanner application DLL normally belongs beside the program that uses it.
