uiribbon.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a DLL you should download from a random website. If it is missing, corrupt, or cannot load, repair Windows first when several applications are affected, then repair or reinstall the specific application if only one program fails.
What this file actually does
uiribbon.dll belongs to the Windows Ribbon Framework, a Win32 and COM framework used by applications that display Ribbon-style controls such as tabs, galleries, command bars, and contextual toolbars. Microsoft documents the framework as a Windows feature supported from Windows 7 onward, with the Platform Update required for some older systems.
The DLL runs inside the application that calls it. That means a crash naming UIRibbon.dll does not automatically prove that the file itself is damaged. The application, a dependent component, a manifest, or corrupted memory may be the real cause.

The names are confusing but important:
System32contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.- A 64-bit application normally loads the copy in
System32. - A 32-bit application normally loads the copy in
SysWOW64.
Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation explains this architecture behavior.
There is no current standalone Microsoft uiribbon.dll redistributable comparable to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Windows build and architecture determine the appropriate file version, so there is no universal “latest” DLL to copy into a system folder.
Causes by symptom

Windows Update, an application update, cleanup software, antivirus quarantine, disk corruption, and malware can all be involved. The error alone cannot identify which one occurred.
Fix uiribbon.dll errors in order
1. Identify the exact program and error
Before changing files, write down:
- The full error message.
- The executable that fails.
- Whether the failure affects one application or several Windows components.
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or security alert.
- The path shown for
UIRibbon.dll, if one is displayed.
A game launcher may show a simple missing-DLL dialog, while Event Viewer may report an activation-context or dependency failure. These are different problems even when they mention the same filename.
Do not assume the application from the filename alone. uiribbon.dll is a shared Windows component, and multiple unrelated programs can use it.
2. Install Windows updates and restart
A servicing update can replace a damaged system component or repair the component store.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the affected program again.
On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, note that timing rather than assuming the update deleted the DLL. An update may expose an existing dependency, application-compatibility, or disk problem.

Antivirus software may quarantine a system file after a false detection, although restoring a file without verifying it can put the computer at risk.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
UIRibbon.dll. - Do not restore the file merely because an application requests it.
- Restore it only after confirming that the item is a genuine Microsoft-signed system file and the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions. If malware is suspected, perform a full scan instead of adding an exclusion for the DLL.
4. Repair the Windows component store with DISM and SFC
This is the main fix when the file is absent or damaged in System32, SysWOW64, or the Windows component store.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. It can appear to pause for a while.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failures point toward deeper servicing or storage damage.
Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; repair is performed by the full version, but it is not required, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an app-specific problem.
5. Check the correct architecture
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows needs the 32-bit system copy in SysWOW64. A 64-bit program needs the 64-bit copy in System32.

Do not copy the file from one folder to the other. Do not use a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit executable or vice versa.

For a program that fails while other software works, its own installation directory may also contain a private copy or dependency. Windows DLL search behavior can allow an application-directory copy to be loaded before the normal system copy. Microsoft documents this in its DLL search order reference.
6. Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one game or application reports the error and Windows programs work normally, focus on that application.
For a Microsoft Store or compatible Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command. The exact label depends on the launcher.
If repair is unavailable or ineffective:
- Back up saves, profiles, presets, and other personal data.
- Uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the publisher’s official source or use the launcher’s library.
- Install it again.
- Test before adding mods, overlays, or third-party plug-ins.
This replaces application-private files and manifests without substituting an arbitrary Windows DLL. It is the correct solution when the program installation is incomplete or incompatible with the current Windows build.
7. Diagnose an activation-context or dependency error
If Event Viewer says Activation context generation failed, names Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus, or refers to a manifest or WinSxS assembly, uiribbon.dll may only be the component that exposed the missing dependency.

Run DISM followed by SFC as described above. For deeper diagnosis, Microsoft’s sxstrace.exe can record side-by-side loader activity:
sxstrace.exe Trace -logfile:%TEMP%sxstrace.etl
Reproduce the error, then stop tracing with:
sxstrace.exe StopTrace
Convert the result to readable text:
sxstrace.exe Parse -logfile:%TEMP%sxstrace.etl -outfile:%TEMP%sxstrace.txt
Open the resulting text file and look for the first missing assembly or manifest error. Do not install a random DLL named in an online search result. A dependency failure needs the correct Windows servicing or application repair.
8. Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error appeared immediately after a driver, update, cleanup tool, or other system change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if offered.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Let Windows restart and complete the operation.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.
9. Consider drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics-driver reinstall is not a standard fix for a missing uiribbon.dll. Consider it only when the crash also involves rendering failures, display-driver errors, or a recent graphics update.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the device category named in Event Viewer.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and inspect the Driver tab.
- Use Update driver or install the current package from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale is slower than checking the exact device and event evidence. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation is handled by the full version, but a driver update is not necessary unless the evidence connects the crash to that device.
10. Perform an in-place Windows repair
If DISM, SFC, updates, application repair, and System Restore do not resolve a system-wide failure, perform an in-place repair installation.
- Back up important files.
- Obtain matching Windows installation media from Microsoft.
- Mount the ISO or insert the installation media.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Choose Change what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue through setup.
Use matching language and edition media. Do not choose a clean installation unless you have a complete backup and intend to remove the existing Windows installation. Microsoft’s installation-media repair instructions cover the process.

What not to do
Do not download uiribbon.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from a different Windows build. Even a clean file may not repair the component store, side-by-side manifest, application installation, or underlying disk problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Microsoft installation media, or the affected program’s official installer instead.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. The Ribbon Framework is normally activated through its COM interfaces, not repaired by manually registering the DLL. Running regsvr32 can produce an error while changing nothing.
Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically
Visual C++ Redistributables, legacy DirectX components, and .NET do not provide the Windows Ribbon Framework DLL. Install one only when the error specifically names a file from that runtime.
Windows Features also has no generic “uiribbon.dll” checkbox. Enabling random features will not repair a missing system component.
FAQ
Is uiribbon.dll safe?
The genuine Windows copy is a Microsoft system component. Verify its location and digital signature through Properties > Digital Signatures rather than trusting the filename alone.

Microsoft does not provide a current standalone uiribbon.dll download package. Windows servicing supplies the correct build for the operating system and architecture.
Why does a game mention a Windows DLL?
The game may use a Windows UI library directly, load a launcher component that uses it, or contain a faulty private dependency. The filename does not prove that the game shipped the DLL.
Why does Explorer or Paint crash with UIRibbon.dll?
The DLL may be the faulting module rather than the root cause. Component corruption, an incompatible wrapper, damaged input, or memory corruption can cause a crash at that point. Use Event Viewer and run DISM followed by SFC.
What should I collect if the problem continues?
Record the exact executable, complete error text, Windows edition and build, DLL path, whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, and the relevant Event Viewer details. Those facts distinguish a missing system file from an application-private copy, architecture mismatch, or side-by-side dependency failure.
