ULTRAKILL is a single-player Windows first-person shooter built around extreme movement, close-range aggression and style scoring. It combines the speed and arena combat of classic shooters with modern spectacle and character-action systems: you dash, slide, wall-jump and parry through enemies, then recover health from their blood. The campaign is playable now, a demo is available, and Steam still lists the game as Early Access while its third and final act and remaining features are completed.
What is ULTRAKILL?
Developed by Arsi “Hakita” Patala and published by New Blood Interactive, ULTRAKILL is a fast-paced, ultraviolent old-school FPS for Windows. Its design deliberately fuses the arena movement of games such as Quake, the aggressive combat of Doom (2016) and the style-driven scoring of character-action games such as Devil May Cry.

Its setting is as direct as its combat: humanity is extinct, and blood-powered machines descend into Hell after surface blood supplies begin to run out. The campaign’s environments draw on imagery associated with Dante’s Inferno, while the game’s systems turn blood into both story and survival mechanic.
How the combat and movement work
Movement is your primary defense
ULTRAKILL is not a cover shooter. Staying mobile is central to survival and scoring. You combine dashes, slides, jumps and other movement options to cross arenas, evade attacks and create better firing angles. Encounters are designed to reward momentum rather than waiting safely behind cover.

Blood restores health at close range
Damaging enemies at close range and fighting around the blood they spill lets your machine regain health. That creates a risk-and-reward loop: aggressive positioning can keep you alive, but careless proximity can put you directly in danger.
Weapons have multiple variations
Weapons are not limited to one fixed firing pattern. Their variations support different distances, timing windows and combo opportunities, so learning when to switch options is part of mastering each encounter.
Style, ranks and optional mastery
Combat performance is measured through style combos and ranks rather than simple completion alone. Experimentation, rapid weapon changes, movement and varied kills can improve your results. Optional challenges, secrets and collectible-style discoveries give experienced players reasons to replay levels after reaching the end.
Is ULTRAKILL finished?
No. Steam continues to label ULTRAKILL as Early Access. The store notice says the game will remain in Early Access until the third and final act is complete and all features have been finalized. The existing campaign and systems are playable, but the final act and the complete feature set should not be treated as released content.
That status matters if you want a finished story immediately. It is less of a concern if you enjoy learning a combat system over time, replaying levels for higher ranks and receiving additions before the 1.0 release.
Can your Windows PC run ULTRAKILL?
The published requirements are modest compared with many current 3D games. You need a 64-bit Windows installation and 3 GB of available storage. The sound-card lines on Steam use jokes such as “No vocal interface detected” and “Yet I must scream”; they are flavor text, not meaningful audio-hardware requirements.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 | 64-bit Windows 11 |
| Processor | 2.4 GHz dual-core or higher | 3.1 GHz quad-core or higher |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Not stated beyond the minimum requirement |
| Graphics | GeForce GTX 560 or equivalent | GeForce GTX 970 or equivalent |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 3 GB available | 3 GB available |
“Equivalent” graphics hardware can vary by driver, game settings and system configuration, so the table is a baseline rather than a guarantee of identical performance on every PC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can you try or buy it?
Demo
A demo is available through the Steam listing. It is the safest way to test whether the speed, visual intensity and movement-heavy combat suit you before buying.
Digital purchase
Steam listed the Windows game at $29.99 when checked for this article. That price and regional availability can change, so verify the current store page before purchase. No physical Windows edition is established here.
Is ULTRAKILL worth buying?
It is a strong fit if you want a demanding shooter where movement, mechanical improvisation and replayable score chasing matter as much as reaching the next checkpoint. The demo lowers the risk, and the low published hardware requirements make it accessible to many older gaming PCs.
Consider waiting or trying the demo first if you require a completed campaign, dislike explicit gore, or prefer slower shooters with cover and tightly prescribed weapon roles. Steam’s listing specifically warns about explicit violence and gore.
How positive is the reception?
At the time of the 2026 Steam snapshot, user reviews were 97% positive from 149,803 all-time English reviews and 96% positive from 2,913 recent reviews. These are changing Steam user-review aggregates, not an independent critic score, and they do not remove the Early Access qualification.
