Jeff Strain announced Possibility Space on October 13, 2021, as a New Orleans-based game studio built around a distributed workforce: employees could live where they wanted and collaborate across locations, while the studio retained a New Orleans office. Its first game was not announced at launch. In 2023, parent company Prytania Media described the project as a social roleplaying platform in development; PC Gamer reported in 2024 that the studio had closed and its staff had been laid off.
What was Possibility Space?
Possibility Space was a game-development studio founded by Jeff Strain, previously the founder of Undead Labs and a co-founder of ArenaNet. The studio launched publicly on October 13, 2021, with New Orleans as its base and an ambition to make large-scale games for a worldwide audience. Greater New Orleans, Inc.’s launch announcement and GamesBeat’s launch coverage describe the announcement and its location.
What did “distributed” mean?
Strain framed the studio as “distributed,” rather than simply remote. In his explanation to GamesBeat, remote work could still suggest a central workplace that employees were expected to orbit; Possibility Space did not restrict where new hires could live. The company had a New Orleans office, but team members could work elsewhere and collaborate online.
The distinction was also about participation, not just geography. Strain said he wanted people outside a central location to have parity in meetings and feel included. This was the studio’s stated approach; the launch coverage does not provide measured evidence that it improved productivity, retention, or game quality.

Why did Strain start the studio?
GamesBeat connected the idea to Strain’s experience of fear and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. He described that experience as a catalyst for the studio and its creative ambition: “That fear and isolation was the catalyst for Possibility Space, a modern kind of game studio, where we are creating a joyful game that’s been my dream for many years.”
What was the studio making, and who backed it?
At launch, Possibility Space had not publicly named its first game; GamesBeat reported that Strain declined to discuss it. The same coverage said the studio had early-stage investment from Transcend Fund and funding from Louisiana’s Economic Development Fund.
In August 2023, Prytania Media described Possibility Space as developing an ambitious social roleplaying platform. The company said the studio had received a $3 million seed investment from Transcend Fund and had a development partnership with an unnamed major publisher. The announcement did not identify that publisher, so its identity should not be inferred. Prytania Media’s August 2023 announcement is the source for that later description and funding figure.
