W. D. Gaster is Undertale’s hidden former Royal Scientist, linked to the CORE and to rare encounters that hint at his disappearance. The game offers fragments rather than a complete biography: followers say his experiments went wrong and that he was shattered across time and space, but they do not identify the experiment or explain exactly what happened. Separating those clues from fan theories is essential to understanding him.
What Undertale establishes about Gaster
Gaster is part of Undertale’s hidden lore, not a character presented through a conventional main-story appearance. Rare follower dialogue identifies him as the Royal Scientist before Alphys and credits him with creating the CORE. The game’s clues are encountered through unusual events and hidden content rather than a standard story sequence. The Undertale Wiki’s account of W. D. Gaster collects these dialogue and event details.
The follower accounts say Gaster’s experiments went wrong, that he fell into his own creation, and that he was shattered across time and space. They do not name the creation involved or explain the mechanics or meaning of being “shattered.” Those gaps matter: the game establishes a disappearance and its strange description, not a fully explained accident.
What is Entry Number Seventeen?
Entry Number Seventeen is a Wingdings message in the hidden room known as room_gaster, and it is one of the most recognizable clues associated with Gaster. The room is not reached by an ordinary route during normal gameplay; the wiki describes access as requiring SAVE manipulation or debug mode. Justyna Janik’s 2021 discussion of Undertale’s hidden material also considers the way rare events and game-file interaction contribute to the character’s story.

- Three interchangeable face plates included
- Swappable eyebrow parts also included for multiple expressions
- Optional parts include a plate of spaghetti and a blue bone
There is another Entry 17 text associated with Alphys in the game files. The shared number alone does not establish that the entries have the same author or explain how they relate. Treating them as definitively one document—or using the number to fill in Gaster’s missing biography—goes beyond what the available clues establish.
Other clues and what they do—and do not—prove
- The name-entry reset: Entering Gaster’s name at the naming screen causes a reset, an unusual behavior that supports the presence of deliberate hidden content.
- Sound Test: A rare Sound Test room contains Gaster’s Theme, another unusual in-game association.
- The Waterfall encounter: A rare Waterfall room features a sprite often called Mystery Man. The game does not explicitly identify that sprite by name as Gaster.
These clues support Gaster’s place in Undertale’s hidden content, but they do not confirm that every mysterious monochrome figure or Gaster-associated file belongs to him.
What is theory rather than confirmed lore?
What “W. D.” means
Because Gaster’s text is associated with Wingdings, fans often connect the initials “W. D.” to the font’s name. That is a plausible interpretation, not an explicit explanation established by the game.

Whether Mystery Man is Gaster
The Mystery Man sprite is commonly identified with Gaster in fan discussions, but the game does not explicitly label it. It is safer to call it a Gaster-associated or Mystery Man encounter than to present the identification as settled canon.

What happened in the experiment
The follower dialogue gives the broad outline—an experiment went wrong, Gaster fell into his own creation, and he was shattered across time and space—but does not specify which experiment, what the creation was, or how to interpret the result. More detailed accounts of the accident are theories, not facts supplied by those lines.
Is Gaster in Deltarune?
Deltarune contains echoes associated with Gaster, including language resembling Entry 17 and music linked to Gaster. These parallels make the connection worth noticing, but they do not, by themselves, identify every mysterious voice or establish a complete shared-world explanation. The Undertale Wiki’s overview documents several of these motif connections; the meaning of the echoes remains unresolved.

Did the 2025 anniversary stream add a Gaster secret?
No playable-game addition is established by the stream material. GamesRadar reported that Toby Fox framed the extra areas shown during the 2025 tenth-anniversary stream as a “what if” and said the extra content would not be added to Undertale. The stream included a colorful version of Gaster’s Mysterious Door, but that appearance should be treated as stream-only material, not a new in-game reveal. GamesRadar’s report on the anniversary stream describes that clarification.
So, who is W. D. Gaster?
The most defensible answer is that Gaster is Undertale’s hidden former Royal Scientist, credited with creating the CORE and described by followers as disappearing after an experiment went wrong. Entry 17 and other rare events add deliberate mystery, but the game leaves the accident’s details, the meaning of his fate, and several popular identifications open. Gaster is canon as a hidden-lore character; many specific explanations of him are not confirmed.
