Your friends hear game audio because that sound is reaching the microphone input Discord is using. The route may be ordinary sound escaping from your headset, Windows loopback such as Stereo Mix, a virtual mixer, the wrong recording device, or faulty analog hardware. Find the route first; changing noise suppression alone rarely fixes an intentionally mixed input.
Identify the kind of leak

This is different from audio included in a Discord screen share or Go Live stream. If the microphone indicator does not activate while the shared application’s audio is audible, check the stream status rather than the mic path.
The 60-second test
- In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Choose the suspected microphone explicitly under Input Device; avoid Default while diagnosing. Choose the actual headset under Output Device.
- Use Mic Test or Let’s Check, where shown, and play game audio without speaking.
- Watch the input meter and test playback.
- Mute the microphone using its hardware switch or Windows mute.
- If the meter responds to the game, that selected input is receiving the sound.
- If it responds only at high headset volume, acoustic bleed is likely.
- If it responds while the microphone is physically muted, Discord is probably listening to another input, a loopback device, or a virtual route.
- If the meter stays quiet but friends hear audio, verify that you are testing the same Discord client, that no stream is active, and that virtual-audio software is not supplying a different input.
Discord’s troubleshooting guide recommends selecting input and output devices, testing the microphone, checking permissions, and resetting voice settings when necessary: Discord Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide.
Choose the correct Discord microphone
- Open Discord and click the User Settings gear.
- Open Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select the actual headset microphone or USB microphone by name.
- Under Output Device, select the headphones or headset you are wearing.
- Run the microphone test, then restart Discord after changing devices.
Wireless headsets often expose separate game and chat devices, and Bluetooth can switch profiles when its microphone becomes active. Recheck both drop-downs after joining a call. Disable Windows loopback (Windows 11)
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and open Sound settings.
- Open More sound settings, then the Recording tab in the legacy panel.
- Disable devices named Stereo Mix, What U Hear, Wave Out Mix, Virtual Cable, VoiceMeeter Output/Input, capture-card inputs, or similar loopback sources unless you intentionally use them.
- Select the physical microphone, open Properties → Listen, and turn off Listen to this device.
- On Levels, check that the microphone is not excessively boosted. Return to Discord and select it explicitly.
Names and menu locations vary by Windows edition, driver, motherboard, and headset. Stereo Mix may be absent even when another utility provides loopback. Also check microphone privacy permissions and whether the device is enabled using Microsoft’s guidance: Fix microphone problems and Fix sound or audio problems in Windows. These instructions target current Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
Stop acoustic bleed
If lowering the headset volume makes the leak disappear, the microphone is hearing the drivers rather than receiving a digital mix. Software cannot reliably remove loud sound that physically enters the capsule.

- Lower the listening volume as a diagnostic and normal-use measure.
- Move a boom microphone close to your mouth and slightly to the side of the ear cup opening.
- Use closed-back headphones; open-back designs intentionally leak more sound.
- Use a microphone’s hardware mute and avoid speakers during voice chat.
- For a standalone microphone, use a directional/cardioid pattern and put speakers behind its rejection zone.
- Test another headset or an ordinary pair of headphones to confirm the result.
Rule out splitters, ports, and hardware crosstalk
- Unplug and firmly reconnect every connector.
- Replace a TRRS adapter or Y-splitter if your PC uses separate headphone and microphone jacks.
- Try rear motherboard jacks instead of the front panel.
- For USB equipment, try another USB port.
- Test the headset on another computer or phone.
- Test a known-good microphone on the same computer.
If the problem follows the headset, suspect its cable, capsule, splitter, or jack. If a different headset works on the same computer, replace the failing hardware. If every microphone records the game, investigate drivers, vendor enhancements, jack-retasking, or motherboard audio circuitry. USB can bypass some analog grounding and splitter problems, but it can still be misrouted by software.
Check virtual mixers and routing apps
Voicemeeter, SteelSeries Sonar, Elgato Wave Link, NVIDIA Broadcast, OBS monitoring, VB-CABLE, capture cards, soundboards, and motherboard utilities can create virtual microphones containing a desktop or stream mix.

- Check Discord → Voice & Video → Input Device.
- Check Windows → Sound → Input.
- Open the routing page in the mixer and inspect every bus, monitor, and broadcast output.
- Temporarily bypass or exit the software. The clean diagnostic route is game and Discord playback to the physical headset, and the physical microphone directly to Discord.
These tools are useful when you deliberately need separate game, chat, music, and recording buses, but each adds more possible inputs. Voicemeeter offers virtual inputs and outputs at its official site. SteelSeries presents Sonar as free Windows routing and microphone software at SteelSeries Sonar. Elgato describes Wave Link 3.0 as free for Windows and macOS and able to route games, Discord, music, browsers, and microphones: supported microphones and interfaces and Wave Link sound routing. Do not install a mixer as a first fix for an accidental leak.
Use Discord processing as a test, not a cure
- Try Echo Cancellation when speakers or monitoring are feeding voices back. Discord documents it as processing intended to remove speaker audio picked up by the microphone: Discord voice-chat management.
- Toggle Noise Suppression/Krisp to compare ordinary background-noise handling. Krisp’s setup guidance warns against stacking overlapping cancellation systems: Krisp and Discord setup.
- Check Automatic Input Sensitivity; raise the threshold if quiet background sound opens the microphone.
- Use Push to Talk temporarily to prevent unwanted transmission while diagnosing.
- Under Voice & Video → Debugging, use Reset Voice and Video Settings if the configuration appears inconsistent.
Noise suppression may reduce a soundtrack while allowing louder explosions or voices through. Neither Krisp nor echo cancellation repairs a desktop mix deliberately routed into the microphone.

When only one game causes it
Compare Discord’s selected input with Windows’ default input and default communications device, the game’s own microphone setting, and any headset profile activated when the game launches. Check where that game’s audio is playing: a different output device can feed a virtual mixer or capture input even while Discord uses the correct microphone. Disable the game’s built-in voice chat temporarily and close other voice applications to exclude a second call or monitoring path.
When replacing hardware makes sense
Buy a replacement only after the signal-path tests. Replacement is justified when the fault follows the headset to another computer, a different headset fixes the same PC, a splitter or cable is defective, or normal listening volume still causes unacceptable bleed. Look for closed-back cups, an adjustable directional boom, independent hardware mute, and clearly documented separate game/chat and microphone devices. A USB or reliable wireless model may avoid a failing analog jack, but no headset prevents a wrong virtual input selection.

- Discord uses the intended microphone by name.
- Discord output is the headset you are wearing.
- Stereo Mix, What U Hear, and unneeded virtual loopback devices are disabled.
- Listen to this device is off.
- No Sonar, Voicemeeter, Wave Link, Broadcast, OBS, or cable mix is selected accidentally.
- The microphone has been physically muted for comparison.
- Headset volume and microphone position have been tested.
- A different port, splitter, headset, or microphone has been tried.
- Discord voice settings have been reset only after the route was checked.
