Crossbows can be unusual in several different ways: some feed bolts from a magazine, some reverse the usual limb arrangement, and others use a compact bullpup layout or combine a crossbow with another weapon. There is no evidence-based ranking of the “most unique” crossbow; the designs below show the distinctions that make the category worth exploring.
What makes a crossbow unique?
“Unique” is best understood here as mechanically or historically distinctive, not literally one of a kind. To compare designs, look at how bolts are loaded, where the limbs and riser sit, how the stock and trigger are arranged, and what cocking system or accessories the maker includes. For modern products, published performance figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results.
Modern crossbow designs
Magazine-fed repeating crossbows
A repeating crossbow stores multiple bolts in a magazine, allowing successive shots without loading each bolt individually. Steambow describes itself as a maker of modern modular repeating crossbows and says its Stinger Pistol Crossbow, introduced in 2019, was the first modern commercial repeating crossbow and the predecessor to its AR-Series. That history is the company’s own account, not an independently established industry-wide finding. Steambow’s company history also places responsibility for checking a product’s legality on the buyer.
Reverse-draw crossbows
In Scorpyd’s description, a reverse-draw layout places the riser closer to the crossbow’s center, points the limb tips outward, and uses inverted cams. The string sits in front of the riser at rest and moves behind it when the crossbow is cocked. Scorpyd says this arrangement can improve balance, lengthen the power stroke, and increase speed; those are the manufacturer’s claims, not independent findings. Its Tremor XP product page describes the model as “new for 2023” and lists a scope, quiver, arrows, and an optional cocking mechanism among its package details. Check current local regulations rather than relying on product-page claims about hunting legality. See Scorpyd’s explanation of its technology for the maker’s account of the layout.

Bullpup crossbows
A bullpup arrangement shifts the grip and trigger forward relative to the action, helping shorten the overall package while retaining a longer working assembly behind the grip. EK Archery calls the Blade’s trigger an “extended bullpup trigger” and presents the layout as a way to compact the design. The company lists the Blade at 340 fps with a 380-grain arrow, a 175-pound draw weight, a length of 33.5–36 inches, and a bow-only mass of 6.7 pounds. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements.
EK Archery lists three 20-inch aluminum bolts, a scope, quiver, cocking rope, safety glasses, and lube wax in the Blade package. It directs prospective buyers to contact a dealer for pricing. Its Blade page also lists compatible parts and gear; confirm compatibility for the specific model rather than assuming that bolts or cocking equipment fit other crossbows.

Hybrid recurve-and-cam systems
Excalibur describes its Hybrid X as combining compression-molded limbs and an integrated Charger X crank with a custom cam design. The maker also describes an anti-dry-fire feature that requires an arrow to be loaded, the safety to be off, and the trigger to be pulled. These details reflect Excalibur’s product description; consult the current manual for operating and safety instructions. Excalibur’s Hybrid X page provides the company’s explanation of the system.
Historical crossbows that combined weapons
The Metropolitan Museum’s publication A Deadly Art: European Crossbows 1250–1850 describes rare surviving weapons that combined a crossbow with another mechanism. Examples include crossbows paired with wheel-lock firearms, a crossbow combined with a hunting sword that the publication calls possibly unique, and a crossbow capable of shooting either pellets or bolts.

- BARNETT: The most trusted name in crossbows since 1962
The publication recorded only a dozen extant examples of weapon-combination crossbows at the time it was written; that is a historical count reported in the book, not a current global census. It suggests the ornate weapons were probably made for noble patrons and may have served as conversation pieces rather than practical arms. Read the relevant chapter in the Metropolitan Museum publication.
How to compare an unusual crossbow
- Feeding: Determine whether the design loads one bolt at a time or uses a magazine.
- Geometry: Check whether the limbs and riser use a reverse-draw arrangement or whether the stock and trigger use a bullpup layout.
- Cocking: Identify whether a rope, integrated crank, or optional mechanism is specified for that model.
- Package and compatibility: Compare what is included and verify that bolts and accessories are listed for the exact model.
- Evidence behind performance: Treat speed, balance, and related performance descriptions as vendor claims unless independent testing is available.
- Local law: Verify current rules for your location before buying, possessing, or using a crossbow.
Legal context depends on location
Crossbow rules are not universal. The UK Home Office’s document, updated 19 March 2026, says the Crossbows Act 1987 makes it an offence to sell or hire a crossbow with a draw weight of at least 1.4 kilograms to a person under 18 in England, Wales, and Scotland. It describes similar legislation in Northern Ireland and restrictions on under-18s possessing crossbows unless supervised by someone aged 21 or over. The document also says hunting with a crossbow is unlawful under the cited UK statutes and discusses the government’s consideration of additional controls. These statements concern the UK only, and policy may change; they do not establish the rules elsewhere. Consult the UK Home Office document and the relevant current official authority for your location.

The same Home Office document reports fewer than 10 crossbow homicides in the UK from 2011 to 2021. It says no crossbow killings were recorded in 2021/2022, the first year of the stated Home Office Homicide Index data collection, and mentions a subsequent killing in 2022. These figures refer to the periods and UK context specified by the source. It also reports a 1991 Parliamentary estimate of 250,000–300,000 crossbows in circulation in England, Wales, and Scotland; that historical estimate is not a current ownership count.
