Unleashing the Sound: Your Guide to Headphones Compatible with PS5

Most headphones can work with PS5 through the DualSense’s 3.5 mm jack, USB, a compatible wireless transmitter or PlayStation Link—but ordinary Bluetooth headphones usually cannot connect directly.

Yes, many headphones work with PS5—but ordinary Bluetooth headphones usually do not connect directly for game audio. The safest choices are a headset plugged into the DualSense controller, a USB headset, a wireless headset with a PS5-compatible USB transmitter, or a PlayStation Link model such as Sony’s PULSE Elite.

Your connection method matters more than the words “gaming headset” on the box. Check the headset’s exact PlayStation model and included transmitter before buying, especially when a product is sold in separate PlayStation and Xbox editions.

What headphones work with PS5?

Connection PS5 support Best for Main drawback
3.5 mm wired Yes, through the DualSense controller Low cost, simplicity, no charging The cable limits movement and uses controller power
USB wired Usually, if it presents itself as a standard USB audio device Reliable audio, stronger microphones and onboard controls Some PC-only software features will not work
Wireless USB transmitter Yes, when the transmitter explicitly supports PS5 Low-latency wireless audio and chat Requires a compatible dongle and correct console version
PlayStation Link Yes, with compatible accessories First-party PlayStation and Portal integration Less universal than ordinary Bluetooth
Bluetooth-only Generally no direct PS5 connection Phones, tablets and other Bluetooth devices Requires a workaround for PS5, often with latency or chat limitations

3.5 mm wired headphones

Plug a compatible headset into the 3.5 mm jack on the DualSense controller. This is the simplest route for game audio, party chat and PS5 3D Audio. A headset with a microphone normally needs a four-conductor TRRS cable; a three-conductor TRS cable carries audio but generally not microphone input. Sony explains the distinction in its PULSE Elite wired-connection guidance.

Wired headphones avoid pairing problems, battery anxiety and wireless interference. The trade-offs are the cable, controller battery use and the possibility that inline controls will not work consistently. For a player who only needs dependable game audio and chat, a good 3.5 mm headset can be a better choice than an expensive wireless model.

  • ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
  • VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings

USB wired headsets

A USB-A or USB-C headset can connect directly to the PS5. Models that appear as standard USB audio devices are the safest bets. USB headsets may provide onboard EQ, microphone monitoring, volume controls or additional processing, although software designed for Windows or macOS may not be available on the console.

Wireless headsets with USB transmitters

Most third-party PS5 wireless headsets use a proprietary 2.4 GHz or similar wireless connection through a USB transmitter. This is usually preferable to Bluetooth for gaming because it is designed for low latency and microphone support.

Do not assume that every “wireless” headset works with PS5. Confirm that the included transmitter supports PlayStation 5 and that you are buying the PlayStation SKU. An Xbox version may use a different transmitter or firmware and may not work wirelessly with PS5.

PlayStation Link headsets

PlayStation Link is Sony’s wireless standard for compatible PlayStation accessories. The PULSE Elite includes a PlayStation Link USB adapter and is designed for PS5, PC, Mac and PlayStation Portal. It can also maintain a PlayStation Link connection while receiving Bluetooth audio from a phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation Link is particularly appealing if you use a Portal as well as a PS5. Its Bluetooth function should not be confused with direct Bluetooth pairing to the console: the PS5 connection uses PlayStation Link.

Can you use Bluetooth headphones with PS5?

Ordinary Bluetooth-only headphones generally cannot connect directly to PS5 for game audio. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported, while most USB and analog headsets are supported.

Bluetooth transmitters connected to a television or another device can create workarounds, but they are not equivalent to native PS5 support. Possible problems include noticeable latency, limited microphone functionality, missing party chat, volume-control complications and audio routing through the television rather than the console.

That means AirPods, Bose headphones, Sony WH-series headphones and similar general-purpose Bluetooth products should not be treated as plug-and-play PS5 headsets merely because they have Bluetooth. They may still work through a cable or a separately supported transmitter, but verify the complete setup before buying.

How PS5 3D Audio works

You do not need a headset carrying a “3D audio” badge to use PS5 Tempest 3D AudioTech. Sony says compatible headphones connected through the DualSense’s 3.5 mm jack, USB-A, USB-C or a supported wireless adapter can receive the console’s 3D audio processing.

The game must support the relevant audio features, and results vary with the game mix, headset tuning, ear-pad seal, fit and the listener’s hearing. A headset’s own “7.1,” surround or spatial mode can also process the signal independently. Start with that processing disabled, enable PS5 3D Audio, and compare the result. Running both systems at once can sound exaggerated or less precise.

SteelSeries likewise says compatible Arctis models connected by USB or 3.5 mm can use PS5 3D Audio, with the console handling the processing. See its support explanation.

Best PS5-compatible headphones by use case

Best official PlayStation integration: Sony PULSE Elite

The PULSE Elite is the clearest first-party choice for a PS5 owner who also wants PlayStation Portal support. It uses PlayStation Link, includes the required USB adapter, has a retractable microphone, supports Bluetooth and offers a manufacturer-rated battery life of up to 30 hours. Sony also uses planar magnetic drivers in the headset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It costs more than basic wired models and is less universal than a conventional Bluetooth headset. Its Bluetooth support is primarily useful for phones and other compatible devices; PS5 audio still uses PlayStation Link. See the official buying page.

Best straightforward official choice: Sony PULSE 3D

The PULSE 3D remains a simple PS5-focused option, particularly when discounted. It includes a wireless USB adapter, supports a 3.5 mm wired connection, and provides PlayStation-oriented game/chat controls and EQ presets. Sony lists up to 12 hours of wireless battery life.

  • Low-Latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity
  • Amplified 40mm Drivers for Powerful Spatial Audio
  • QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth Switching
  • Four Turtle Beach Audio EQ Modes

It lacks PlayStation Link and has an older feature set than the PULSE Elite. Compare its current price with the Elite before choosing it; the older model makes the most sense when its simplicity or discount outweighs the newer headset’s longer battery and Portal support. Product details are on Sony’s PULSE 3D page.

Best for PS5 plus phone audio: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7P

The Arctis Nova 7P combines a PS5-compatible USB-C wireless dongle with Bluetooth, allowing game audio over the low-latency wireless link while mixing phone audio or calls. SteelSeries lists up to 38 hours of battery life and compatibility with PS5 Tempest 3D Audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the 7P or explicitly PlayStation-compatible version, not an Xbox-only edition. It offers more flexibility than a basic headset but also introduces more controls and wireless modes to manage. See the official product page.

Best premium sound and battery focus: Audeze Maxwell 2 for PlayStation

The Maxwell 2 is aimed at buyers who prioritize higher-end audio and long battery life. The PlayStation version uses 90 mm planar drivers, supports PS5 and PC, includes AI microphone noise filtering, and is listed with more than 80 hours of low-latency wireless gameplay by PlayStation Direct.

The trade-offs are price and weight. A heavier headset may be tiring over long sessions even if its sound is excellent, so comfort should matter as much as the planar-driver specification. PlayStation Direct listed the standard Maxwell 2 at $329 and an ANC PlayStation version at $429 on August 18, 2026; prices and stock can change. Check the current listing and Audeze’s product page.

Best competitive-oriented feature set: Razer BlackShark V3 Pro for PlayStation

The PlayStation version of the BlackShark V3 Pro combines wireless operation, a detachable microphone and active noise cancellation with a competitive-gaming focus. It may suit players who want isolation and low-latency wireless features, but ANC is not automatically better for every room or game. Competitive tuning may also be less enjoyable for music and cinematic titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation Direct listed it at $249.99 on August 18, 2026. Verify the exact PlayStation SKU at Razer or the PlayStation Direct headset catalogue.

  • QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth switching
  • Flip-to-Mute Mic with A.I.-Based Noise Reduction
  • Multiplatform, Low-latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2

Best for long battery life and a charging dock: Nacon RIG 900 MAX

The RIG 900 MAX is worth considering if a charging base and a manufacturer-rated battery life of more than 50 hours matter more than PlayStation Link integration. It is a less ecosystem-focused choice than the PULSE Elite, but a dock can make daily charging easier. PlayStation Direct listed it at $249.99 on August 18, 2026.

Best wired value

There is no single wired winner without independent microphone, comfort and sound testing. Look for a 3.5 mm headset with a four-conductor cable if you need chat, or a standard USB audio headset if you want to bypass the controller. Prioritize a comfortable fit, a usable boom microphone and straightforward controls over branding or an unsupported surround feature.

  2. Open the PS5 Control Centre or go to Settings > Sound.
  3. Confirm the headset is selected as the output and input device.
  4. Adjust output volume, microphone level and game/chat balance.
  5. Enable and configure 3D Audio if you want to use it.

  1. Connect the headset to a PS5 USB-A or USB-C port using its compatible cable.
  2. Open Settings > Sound and check the input and output devices.

Sony PULSE Elite

  1. Turn on the PS5.
  2. Insert the included PlayStation Link adapter into a USB-A port.
  3. Press the PlayStation Link button on the headset.
  4. Follow any on-screen instructions.
  5. Check for updates under Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update.

See Sony’s PULSE Elite connection instructions if the adapter and headset do not connect.

Existing PS4 wireless headsets

Some official PlayStation headsets, including PULSE 3D, Gold and Platinum models, are listed as compatible with PS5. Third-party PS4 headsets may also work, but compatibility can depend on the included USB adapter and firmware. Check the manufacturer’s instructions by exact model number rather than relying on the product family name.

Useful PS5 audio settings

  • Output device: Confirm that the PS5 is sending sound to the headset rather than the television.
  • Output to headphones: Check whether all audio or only chat audio is being routed to the headset.
  • Microphone input: Select the headset microphone and verify that mute is not enabled on the headset or controller.
  • Microphone level: Use Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level to keep your voice clear without clipping.
  • Chat/game balance: Use the headset or PS5 controls to prevent one source from overpowering the other.
  • 3D Audio: Enable PS5 processing, then compare it with the headset’s own processing disabled.

Headset-specific apps may be required for firmware, EQ, sidetone or microphone filters. Sony notes that its Headset Companion app is not compatible with PS5 consoles, so some customization must be performed on a PC, Mac or mobile device, depending on the manufacturer.

PS5 headset troubleshooting

Problem First checks
No sound Check the selected output device, headset volume, mute state, USB adapter, power and whether the headset is connected to another device.
No microphone Use a four-conductor TRRS cable for 3.5 mm chat, unmute the microphone, select the correct input and adjust microphone level.
Echo in party chat Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level and move the fader two to four notches to the left, as Sony recommends.
Game/chat balance is wrong Check both the headset’s game/chat controls and the PS5 Control Centre audio balance. Game audio and chat audio can fail independently.
Wireless dropouts Reseat the adapter, power-cycle the headset, move the adapter away from other wireless devices and try a USB extension cable.
Sound skips near other USB devices USB 3.0 devices can interfere with some wireless adapters. Remove unnecessary devices or increase the adapter’s distance from them.
Bluetooth will not pair This is usually expected with Bluetooth-only headphones: direct third-party Bluetooth headset connections are generally unsupported.
3D Audio sounds unnatural Disable the headset’s own surround or spatial mode and compare it with PS5 Tempest 3D Audio enabled.

Sony’s detailed wireless-headset troubleshooting guide covers adapter placement, interference, microphone echo and reset procedures.

What to check before buying

Connection reliability

For a PlayStation-focused setup, prioritize PlayStation Link, then a headset with an explicitly PS5-compatible USB transmitter. USB wired and 3.5 mm wired options are dependable alternatives. Treat Bluetooth workarounds as a last resort rather than an equivalent connection.

Microphone quality

A retractable or detachable boom usually gives you more control than a hidden microphone, but “AI noise cancellation” is not a guarantee of natural voice quality. It may reduce keyboard or household noise while changing the tone of your voice. Check whether the microphone works in wired mode and whether sidetone is supported.

Comfort

Consider clamp force, headband pressure, ear-pad material, heat buildup and eyeglass compatibility. Weight matters, but it is not a complete comfort measurement: a well-balanced heavier headset can feel better than a lighter model with excessive clamp force. Replacement-pad availability can also determine how long the headset remains comfortable.

Battery life

Battery figures are manufacturer estimates and vary with volume, microphone use, lighting, Bluetooth and wireless mode. Examples from the listed products include up to 30 hours for PULSE Elite, up to 12 hours for PULSE 3D, 38 hours for Arctis Nova 7P and more than 80 hours for Maxwell 2. Treat those as claims, not independent measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone audio and multi-device use

Check whether Bluetooth audio can be mixed simultaneously with PS5 audio, merely switched, or used only after game audio is disconnected. PULSE Elite and Arctis Nova 7P are designed for simultaneous PlayStation wireless and Bluetooth use, but their controls and behavior differ.

Platform and software support

Verify the exact PlayStation, Xbox or PC edition. Also check whether EQ, firmware updates, microphone filters, button remapping and sidetone require a computer or mobile app. A headset can be physically compatible while still withholding some features on PS5.

Bottom line

For the lowest-cost, least-complicated setup, use a 3.5 mm headset with a TRRS cable through the DualSense. For wireless third-party options, choose a model with a USB transmitter explicitly made for PS5. For the cleanest first-party PlayStation ecosystem, the PULSE Elite’s PlayStation Link connection is the strongest fit, especially if you also use PlayStation Portal. PULSE 3D remains a straightforward option when its price is right.

Do not buy Bluetooth-only headphones expecting them to pair directly with PS5. And do not choose a headset solely for a “3D audio” label: PS5 performs the spatial processing, while comfort, microphone quality, tuning and a reliable connection determine whether you will actually enjoy using it.
