NVIDIA Instant Replay continuously keeps a rolling buffer of recent gameplay, then saves that buffer when you press a shortcut. On current Windows installations, the workflow lives in the NVIDIA App; “ShadowPlay” is the broader name for NVIDIA’s capture technology, while “GeForce Experience” and “Share” refer to older interfaces. This guide covers supported GeForce PCs, from setup and audio testing to storage and troubleshooting.
Quick start: press Alt+Z, open Settings → Video capture, choose your replay length and quality, enable Instant Replay, then use the save-last-footage shortcut shown in your overlay—commonly Alt+F10. NVIDIA’s defaults can differ between app versions, so verify the binding in your own shortcut panel.
What Instant Replay does
Instant Replay is a rolling gameplay buffer. While it is enabled, the NVIDIA App continually captures recent frames in the background. Saving a clip preserves only the amount currently held in that buffer; it is not an unlimited recording and cannot recover an event that happened before Instant Replay was turned on.
How it differs from other capture controls
- Instant Replay: saves footage from before you pressed the save command.
- Record: begins recording when you start it and ends when you stop it.
- Highlights: uses supported game events—such as kills or boss fights—defined through game integration. See NVIDIA’s explanation at NVIDIA Highlights.
- Screenshot: saves a still image.
- Desktop capture: can extend capture beyond a supported game window when enabled, subject to privacy restrictions and application limitations.
Check compatibility before you start
You need a Windows PC, a supported NVIDIA GeForce GPU with an NVENC-capable encoder, a reasonably current NVIDIA App and graphics driver, and enough free storage for the buffer and saved files. NVIDIA says the app uses the GPU’s dedicated NVENC encoder on supported hardware, but support varies by GPU, driver and operating-system combination.

Install the NVIDIA App and open the overlay
- Download the app from NVIDIA’s official NVIDIA App page.
- Install it and apply a graphics-driver update if the installer offers one.
- Launch your game, or remain on the Windows desktop if you intend to use desktop capture.
- Press Alt+Z to open the in-game overlay. If nothing appears, use the troubleshooting section below.
Older guides may say “GeForce Experience,” “Share” or “ShadowPlay.” Those names explain the history of the feature, but the current setup path is the NVIDIA App.
Enable Instant Replay step by step
- Press Alt+Z.
- Select the Instant Replay control or open the capture controls.
- Choose the settings gear, then open Video capture.
- Set the Instant Replay length.
- Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate or quality preset. Available choices depend on your GPU and app version.
- Select a codec where offered, then configure game audio, microphone and any separate-track option.
- Choose a capture folder with adequate free space.
- Return to the overlay and switch Instant Replay on.
- Confirm the overlay indicator shows that the buffer is active.
- After an event, press the displayed save-last-footage shortcut. NVIDIA currently documents Alt+F10 for saving and Alt+Shift+F10 for toggling Instant Replay, but confirm those bindings locally.
Choose replay length, quality and codec
Replay length
- Short buffers reduce temporary storage and avoid saving unnecessary footage.
- Longer buffers suit tutorials, long multiplayer sequences and moments whose importance becomes clear later, but require more storage and can increase disk activity.
Older GeForce Experience material referred to a 20-minute limit; that is historical, not a universal limit for current NVIDIA App installations. Use the length shown in your current Video capture panel.
Codec choices
| Codec | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | Maximum compatibility with editors, browsers and social platforms | Usually less efficient than newer codecs at comparable quality |
| HEVC/H.265 | Smaller files when your editor and destination support it | Less universal playback and upload support |
| AV1 | Supported GPUs and workflows where file efficiency matters | Playback and editing support varies |
NVIDIA release material lists AV1 for Record, Instant Replay and Highlights and claims up to 40% compression efficiency relative to H.264. That is a vendor claim, not a guarantee: results depend on resolution, bitrate, game content and encoder generation. H.264 is the safest starting choice; test a short AV1 clip before committing to a large workflow. See the NVIDIA App release highlights.

Frame rate, HDR and workload
Higher resolution, frame rate, bitrate, HDR and long buffers increase the workload. NVIDIA lists 240 FPS ShadowPlay recording for GeForce RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs in its release highlights, but the actual option also depends on resolution, codec, driver and app version.
Configure game audio and microphone capture
In Settings → Video capture, select the intended Windows output and microphone devices, check the microphone mute or push-to-talk state, and enable separate audio tracks if your version provides them. A clip can contain game sound while omitting the microphone, or the reverse, if the wrong device or track is selected. NVIDIA describes configurable sources and multi-track audio in its NVIDIA App feature overview.
- Check the selected Windows microphone and output device.
- Verify the microphone is not muted in the overlay.
- Confirm the source in Settings → Video capture.
- Save a short test clip.
- Open it in a player or editor that can expose multiple audio tracks.
- If tracks are confusing or unsupported, temporarily disable multi-track audio and test a mixed track.
Choose storage and manage clips
Set the capture location to a drive with comfortable free space. A separate fast SSD can reduce contention when the game and capture files compete for the same disk, but it is an optimization rather than a requirement. NVIDIA notes that capture locations and disk-space limits are configurable.
Open the NVIDIA App Gallery to browse captures organized by game and media type, or inspect the configured folder directly. Check that path before concluding a clip is missing. Back up important videos before deleting files or clearing the Gallery.

Customize and verify keyboard shortcuts
Open Alt+Z → Settings → Shortcuts and inspect the entries for overlay, Instant Replay toggle, save recent footage, recording and microphone. Assign combinations that the game does not already use.
| Function | Defaults shown in NVIDIA documentation |
|---|---|
| Open or close overlay | Alt+Z in newer NVIDIA App material; Ctrl+G in an older/current support table |
| Toggle Instant Replay | Alt+Shift+F10 in newer material; Ctrl+Shift+0 in the support table |
| Save recent footage | Alt+F10 in newer material; Ctrl+0 in the support table |
| Toggle recording | Ctrl+9 in the support table |
| Toggle microphone | Ctrl+M in the support table |
Because NVIDIA publishes both shortcut schemes, the binding displayed in your overlay is authoritative. The support table is available at NVIDIA Customer Care.
Test a clip before you need it
- Enable Instant Replay.
- Perform an identifiable action in the game.
- Press the save shortcut.
- Wait for the save notification.
- Open the Gallery or configured folder.
- Play the file and check picture, frame rate, game audio and microphone audio.
Recommended settings by use case
| Use case | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Competitive highlights | Short buffer, high supported frame rate, fast SSD and a codec accepted by your editor |
| Social clips | H.264 unless the destination explicitly accepts AV1 |
| Tutorials | Longer buffer, desktop capture when necessary, tested microphone and separate tracks |
| Archival footage | High-quality codec, ample storage and a separate backup plan |
Troubleshoot common failures
The overlay does not appear
- Confirm the NVIDIA App is running and the in-game overlay is enabled.
- Check that another application is not intercepting the shortcut.
- Update the app and driver.
- Check whether the game blocks overlays.
- Do not confuse the local NVIDIA App overlay with GeForce NOW’s streaming overlay.
Instant Replay turns itself off
Driver or app instability, conflicting overlays, privacy restrictions, insufficient storage, protected content, a game changing capture state or encoder limitations can all contribute. Turn it off, restart the NVIDIA App, check free space and the save directory, disable unnecessary third-party overlays, test with desktop capture disabled, then try another game. Update or roll back a driver only after recording the current version and confirming a driver-specific problem.
Black screen or missing game footage
Test supported capture modes and compare fullscreen, borderless-windowed and windowed modes. Check whether desktop capture is required, whether DRM or protected video is involved, and whether another capture application conflicts. Also verify that the file was not saved to a different folder. HDR and multi-monitor configurations can change results.

Stuttering or performance loss
- Reduce replay length.
- Lower resolution or frame rate.
- Test H.264 instead of AV1.
- Move captures to another fast drive.
- Disable unnecessary desktop capture.
- Compare gameplay with Instant Replay on and off while watching GPU, VRAM, CPU and disk activity.
GPU-assisted encoding can reduce overhead, but it does not make capture impact-free.

Instant Replay is ideal for low-friction local clips and a rolling buffer. It is less suitable for multiple cameras, elaborate scenes, alerts, transitions, advanced source routing, cross-platform use or unsupported applications.
OBS Studio is free and open source and offers Replay Buffer, full-session recording, streaming, webcams, scenes and advanced audio, at the cost of more setup. Windows’ built-in capture tools suit basic recording without NVIDIA-specific controls. Third-party clip services may add event detection or cloud sharing, but bring their own accounts, background services, storage policies and privacy considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Instant Replay record continuously?
It continuously maintains a rolling buffer only while Instant Replay is enabled. Saving preserves the configured amount of footage already in that buffer.
Can Instant Replay recover a moment from before I enabled it?
No. Footage from before activation was never in the rolling buffer.
Does Instant Replay work on every NVIDIA GPU?
No. GPU, driver and operating-system support varies. Check NVIDIA’s current system-requirements and supported-GPU pages.
Can I change the save shortcut?
Yes. Open Alt+Z → Settings → Shortcuts and assign a combination that does not conflict with your game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is AV1 always better than H.264?
No. AV1 can improve efficiency on supported systems, but editor, player and upload compatibility varies. H.264 remains the safer compatibility choice.
