Unruly Heroes is a hand-drawn 2D action-platformer for Windows based on Journey to the West. It is an especially good fit for solo play and four-player couch co-op, but its story campaign is not a conventional native online co-op mode. Steam offers Remote Play Together as a way to stream that local session to friends; online play is otherwise chiefly associated with PvP.
You can buy it for PC through Steam or the Xbox/Microsoft Store. Both listings showed $19.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, but storefront prices can change.
What is Unruly Heroes?
Released on January 23, 2019, Unruly Heroes follows four adventurers trying to recover scattered fragments of the Sacred Scroll and restore balance. Its campaign combines side-scrolling platforming, melee combat, environmental puzzles, boss encounters and collectible hunting across several fantasy worlds.
The four playable heroes

The heroes have distinct attacks, movement options and situational strengths. You can switch between them during play, so progression is not just a matter of choosing one permanent character.

What the feature list means in practice
- More than 20 attacks and combos: combat has more depth than basic button-mashing.
- Enemy possession: some encounters let you use an enemy’s strengths and abilities instead of simply defeating it.
- Replayable stages and collectibles: revisiting levels can uncover missed items and improve completion.
- Photo mode: useful for pausing the colorful hand-drawn scenes and creating screenshots.

The two editions should be treated as separate storefront versions. The Xbox page’s broad “online multiplayer” wording should not be read as proof of native online story co-op; available developer information distinguishes the local campaign from online PvP.

These are the game’s historical minimums, not a performance guarantee. The listing does not state a modern recommended PC, target frame rate, resolution or equivalent AMD/Intel GPU. Leave additional free space for the storefront client, updates, shader caches and save data.

Windows 7 appears in the game’s requirements, but a current Steam installation should be treated as requiring Windows 10 or newer: Steam says its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. A system that meets the game’s old minimum can therefore still be unsuitable for installing through today’s Steam client.

How to install through Steam
- Install the current Steam client from the official Steam website and sign in or create an account.
- Open the Unruly Heroes store page.
- Buy the game or redeem it if it is already in your account.
- Open Library, select Unruly Heroes and choose Install.
- Choose the destination drive and confirm.
- Wait for Steam to download and verify the files, then select Play.
Steam occasionally changes labels and layout, but the Library-to-Install flow remains the relevant path.
If the Steam version will not launch
- Open the game’s Steam properties and run Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam after an interrupted or incomplete download.
- Update the graphics driver directly from Nvidia, AMD or Intel.
- Confirm that Windows is using the intended display and audio devices.
- Reconnect the controller before launching if input is missing.
- Do not install unofficial cracks, repacks, DLL files or replacement executables.
How to install through Xbox or Microsoft Store
- Sign in to the Microsoft Store or Xbox app with the account that owns the game.
- Search for Unruly Heroes Windows 10.
- Confirm that the listing identifies PC as a supported platform.
- Select Buy, Get or Install, depending on ownership and the current storefront state.
- Choose an installation drive if Windows asks for one.
- Launch from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store or the Windows Start menu.
The Xbox app and Microsoft Store may need to use the same Microsoft account. If installation fails, update both apps and check Windows Gaming Services and Store permissions. Clearing a Store cache or repairing the Xbox app can help with licensing and download errors, although the Xbox listing itself does not provide a complete troubleshooting manual.

First-launch checklist
- Choose fullscreen, borderless or windowed mode if those options are offered.
- Confirm resolution and aspect ratio.
- Check the active audio output and volume.
- Connect and test a controller before adding more players.
- Assign players for local co-op and verify that each input is recognized.
- Check cloud-save status in the storefront you selected.
- On a laptop, confirm the game is using the intended discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Temporarily disable overlays if they interfere with startup or input.
Current sources do not establish a reliable keyboard-control chart, so use the game’s own prompts rather than relying on an old key-binding list.
Controller or keyboard?
The game is playable with keyboard controls, but a controller is the safer recommendation for most players. Directional platforming, multiple attack inputs, character switching and aiming-like actions are easier to manage with analog movement and a familiar gamepad layout. Independent PC coverage favored controller play, while Steam user feedback includes complaints about awkward keyboard aiming and directional object interactions; these are player experiences, not a universal compatibility defect. - Connect the controller before starting the game.
- If prompts show the wrong device, close the game, reconnect the controller and relaunch.
- Test one controller in single-player before connecting several for co-op.
- For four-player sessions, make sure Windows recognizes every controller and that the PC has enough USB ports or Bluetooth capacity.
Do not assume every controller model is officially supported. The available evidence establishes general controller compatibility and Steam controller-related support, not a complete device-by-device list.

How multiplayer works on PC
Campaign co-op: local, up to four players
The principal story campaign supports one to four players on the same PC. It is designed as couch co-op, so each participant normally needs a recognized input device. This is the strongest reason to choose the game for a shared-screen group.
Online PvP
Steam lists both local and online PvP. Competitive play is separate from the adventure campaign, and third-party coverage has raised concerns about activity and matchmaking. Treat PvP as an additional mode rather than the main reason to buy.
Remote Play Together: the online campaign workaround
Steam Remote Play Together can stream the host’s local co-op session to remote friends. The host must own and run the game; joining players enter the streamed local session rather than running independent campaign copies. Experience depends on the host PC, upload bandwidth, latency and controller forwarding. This is not native online campaign co-op. The developer’s clarification appears in the Steam Community discussion.

Features worth understanding before you buy
Hero switching
Switching heroes proactively helps with traversal, combat matchups and puzzle situations. Waiting until a character is defeated can make encounters harder than necessary.
Possession and environmental play
Enemy possession gives encounters a problem-solving layer: an enemy’s ability may be useful for crossing an obstacle or handling a threat. Levels also mix hazards, platform timing and environmental puzzles with fights.
Cloud saves and achievements
Steam provides Steam Cloud and achievements. The Xbox listing confirms Xbox cloud saves. Neither source establishes cross-save or cross-buy between the two storefronts.
Beginner tips
- Learn every hero. Different movement and attack profiles make certain routes and puzzles easier for particular characters.
- Switch early. Change characters when a situation calls for it instead of waiting for a defeat.
- Practice movement timing. Double jumps, wall movement, attacks and directional actions matter more than button mashing.
- Respect platforming. Hazards and timing can be as demanding as enemy health bars.
- Start with a controller if possible. It generally makes analog movement and directional combat more comfortable.
- Explore thoroughly. Replaying stages can recover collectibles and improve completion.
- Coordinate in co-op. Discuss character switching and puzzle roles instead of having everyone attack the same target.
- Set expectations for remote play. Use Remote Play Together when remote friends are the goal; do not expect a dedicated online campaign server.
- Separate campaign and PvP expectations. Reviews were generally more favorable toward the adventure and local co-op than competitive play. See Pocket Gamer and The Gaming Blog.
- Expect some demanding interactions. Player and reviewer feedback describes platforming or directional actions as tougher than the bright art style suggests; this is subjective experience, not an official difficulty rating.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game does not start
- Verify Steam files, or update/repair the Xbox app and Microsoft Store.
- Restart the relevant storefront after an interrupted installation.
- Update the GPU driver and check the active display and audio devices.
- Disable overlays temporarily.
The controller is not detected
- Reconnect it before launching.
- Test it in Windows and in a one-player session first.
- For multiple players, confirm every device appears in Windows before opening the game.
Remote Play is unstable
- Use the host PC with the stronger wired or low-latency connection.
- Reduce competing network traffic and confirm that input forwarding is enabled.
- Remember that Remote Play streams the host’s local game and cannot remove latency entirely.
Xbox installation is blocked
- Verify both apps use the owning Microsoft account.
- Update the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and Gaming Services.
- Check Windows permissions, available disk space and Store cache health.
Should you buy Unruly Heroes on Windows?

Choose Steam if you want Steam Cloud, achievements, community troubleshooting and Remote Play Together. Choose the Xbox/Microsoft Store version if you already live in the Xbox app and value Microsoft-account integration and Xbox cloud saves. In either case, the clearest expectation is the same: Unruly Heroes is a colorful, relatively undemanding action-platformer whose main multiplayer strength is local co-op, with Remote Play Together providing a host-based online alternative.
