Union Pacific steam locomotive No. 844 will join Big Boy No. 4014 for a limited holiday tour in November 2026. On Nov. 21, the engines are scheduled to pull a fundraising excursion from Greeley to Denver, then appear in a free public display at Denver Union Station. The event supports Make-A-Wish.
When and where can you see No. 844 and Big Boy?
The announced public event is Saturday, Nov. 21, 2026. The locomotives are scheduled to run together on a fundraising excursion from Greeley to Denver, Colorado, followed by a public display at Denver Union Station. Union Pacific’s Oct. 5 announcement says Santa Claus and elves are expected to hand out limited-edition gifts at the display; supplies are limited.
The railroad has not published display hours, a detailed departure timetable, or intermediate stops in the checked event information. Union Pacific says further tour details will be available in the coming weeks. Check its steam schedule for updates before making travel plans.
Can you see the engines without buying an excursion ticket?
Yes. The Denver Union Station display is free and open to the public, so visitors do not need an excursion ticket to see the locomotives there. The Greeley-to-Denver ride is a separate, ticketed fundraising excursion.

How do tickets for the UP 844 holiday train go on sale?
Union Pacific’s schedule says ticket sales for Union Pacific Railroad Museum patrons begin Oct. 16, 2026. Any tickets remaining are scheduled to go on sale to the general public Oct. 19. The railroad has not stated a ticket price or guaranteed that tickets will remain for general sale. Check the official schedule for ticket details and availability.
Why is No. 844’s return notable?
Built in 1944, No. 844 hauled Union Pacific passenger trains including the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose, and Challenger. When diesel locomotives took over passenger service, it worked freight service in Nebraska from 1957 to 1959. It escaped scrapping in 1960 and was retained for special service.

Union Pacific describes No. 844 as the last steam locomotive built for the railroad and the only Class I steam locomotive in North America never permanently retired from service. Its 2026 appearance will be its first public appearance since it and No. 4014 traveled together in 2019 for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in Utah.
How close can you stand to photograph the trains?
Union Pacific says to stay at least 25 feet back from the tracks when viewing or photographing the locomotives. Do not stand on the tracks or track ballast for a picture, and do not climb on railroad equipment. The railroad’s No. 844 announcement includes its safety reminder.

What is confirmed—and what is still pending?

The Oct. 5 update added No. 844 to the holiday event. Union Pacific’s Sept. 17 announcement had originally presented the holiday tour as a Big Boy-only event; its current schedule lists both locomotives for Nov. 21.
