The quickest safe path is to check for a Ubisoft outage, restart the launcher and network, rebuild its cache, then investigate firewall, DNS, account, and router causes. Do not begin by editing the Windows hosts file, forwarding ports, disabling IPv6 permanently, or reinstalling the game.
Ubisoft Connect may be required to install, launch, unlock, synchronize, or use online features in Ubisoft games; requirements vary by title, and some games require a permanent connection. See Ubisoft’s Terms of Use.
First, identify where the connection fails
The same message can indicate an outage, damaged launcher data, account-linking trouble, or a local network block. Note which situation applies:
- Ubisoft Connect will not open or immediately reports “Connection Lost.”
- The website accepts your login but the desktop client does not.
- Steam or Epic launches Ubisoft Connect and returns to the login screen.
- The launcher works, but one game loses connection during matchmaking.
- Cloud synchronization, downloads, or updates fail.
- Every Ubisoft game fails, or only one title fails.
A browser-only failure points toward Ubisoft authentication, an outage, or your network. A single-game failure is more likely to involve that game’s files, servers, anti-cheat, or entitlement.

Quick checklist
- Check Ubisoft support and service-status information.
- Exit Ubisoft Connect completely, restart Windows, and reboot the router.
- Disconnect VPN or proxy software and test again.
- Rename the Ubisoft Connect
cachefolder. - Allow Ubisoft Connect and the affected game through firewall and security software.
- Flush DNS and reset Windows networking.
- Try a phone hotspot or wired connection.
- Verify game files and the Ubisoft account linked to Steam or Epic.
- Update or reinstall Ubisoft Connect, not the entire game.
- Escalate with the complete error and diagnostics if the problem persists.
1. Check whether Ubisoft is down
Check Ubisoft’s official support channels and service information first. Also test whether the Ubisoft website loads and accepts a sign-in. Ask friends in the same region whether they see the same failure. A third-party outage tracker can corroborate reports, but it is not definitive.
Try a phone hotspot. If the launcher works there but not on home broadband, the likely fault is your router, ISP, DNS, filtering, NAT, or firewall. If the website, launcher, and games fail across multiple networks, local changes will not repair a Ubisoft authentication outage or account problem. Ubisoft does not guarantee uninterrupted availability of every service in every location or device.
2. Restart the launcher, computer, and router
- Close the game.
- Open the Ubisoft Connect system-tray menu and choose the exit command.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. End remaining Ubisoft Connect or Ubisoft Game Launcher processes only if the client did not close normally. - Restart Windows.
- Power-cycle the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return.
- Launch Ubisoft Connect and sign in to the intended account.
Disconnect a VPN, Windows proxy, “game booster,” DNS filter, or corporate, school, hotel, or parental-control filter for this test. Re-enable privacy and security tools after testing.
3. Rebuild the Ubisoft Connect cache
Corrupted temporary launcher data can prevent login, downloads, cloud synchronization, or game launch. Follow Ubisoft’s official cache instructions:

- Close Ubisoft Connect completely.
- Open its installation directory. A common default is
C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launcher, but installations can use another location. - If necessary, right-click the Ubisoft Connect shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Locate the folder named
cacheand rename it tocache_backup. - Start Ubisoft Connect again and let it create a new cache.
- Sign in and test the game.
Renaming is safer than immediate deletion and should not remove installed games or account ownership. The client may rebuild temporary data and ask you to sign in again. Delete the backup only after the issue is resolved.

4. Check firewall and antivirus permissions
Web browsing can work while security software blocks Ubisoft authentication or game-server traffic. In Windows Defender Firewall, allow the Ubisoft Connect executable, Ubisoft Game Launcher executable, and affected game executable on the networks you actually use. Check third-party antivirus, firewalls, endpoint security, parental controls, and DNS filters for blocked or duplicate rules.
A short diagnostic test can confirm interference: temporarily pause the security product, test once, then immediately turn it back on. If the test identifies the cause, create a narrow application exception or correct the rule; do not leave protection disabled. 5. Flush DNS and reset Windows networking
Run these commands one at a time in an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal:
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset- Restart Windows after the Winsock reset, then test Ubisoft Connect.
Ubisoft troubleshooting material specifically includes ipconfig /flushdns (reference). DNS flushing helps stale or incorrect local DNS data; it cannot fix an outage, an account lock, corrupted files, or a firewall block.
6. Inspect VPN, proxy, filtering, and the hosts file
Turn off VPN and proxy software for testing. If you use Pi-hole or another DNS filter, a parental-control service, or a managed network, check whether Ubisoft authentication and content-delivery domains are blocked.

The Windows hosts file is C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. Back it up before changing it. Remove suspicious or obsolete Ubisoft entries and restore the default file using Microsoft’s procedure: reset the hosts file. Do not paste old Ubisoft IP addresses from forum posts; addresses and CDN routing change, and Ubisoft’s older regional guidance describes such edits as temporary and third-party (regional notice).
7. Test IPv4, IPv6, NAT, and the router
Keep IPv4 enabled on both the router and Windows adapter. If Ubisoft works on a hotspot but not home broadband, investigate router firmware, IPv6 settings, ISP filtering, and double NAT. Ubisoft has historically advised ensuring IPv4 support when IPv6 configuration caused online problems (IPv4/IPv6 guidance).
Temporarily disabling IPv6 can be a diagnostic step only. Re-enable it if there is no improvement, since disabling it can disrupt other services and conceal an ISP or router fault.
Port forwarding is relevant mainly when the launcher logs in but multiplayer has strict NAT or matchmaking problems. It is not a first-line fix for a client that cannot authenticate. Double NAT, disabled or malfunctioning UPnP, router firewall rules, and ISP filtering can all contribute. A secondary list based on older Ubisoft material mentions ports 443, 14000, 14008, 14020, 14022, 14027, 14028, and 14043, but requirements vary by game and may have changed (historical reference). Consult the affected game’s current Ubisoft support page before forwarding anything.
8. Verify the game and account
When only one game fails
- Check that game’s current server and support notices.
- Verify files through Steam, Epic Games Store, or Ubisoft Connect, depending on the installation.
- Update both the game and Ubisoft Connect.
- Test another Ubisoft title to separate a game-specific issue from a launcher issue.
When Steam or Epic is involved
A purchase through Steam or Epic can still require Ubisoft Connect. Sign in to the Ubisoft account that owns the entitlement and verify browser access before unlinking anything. Signing into a different account can look like a connection or activation failure. Repeatedly unlinking and relinking accounts can create additional complications.

9. Update or reinstall Ubisoft Connect
Only escalate here after cache, network, security, and account checks:
- Download the current installer from Ubisoft’s official Ubisoft Connect page.
- Close the launcher and install the client over the existing installation.
- Restart Windows and test.
- If necessary, uninstall and reinstall Ubisoft Connect.
This does not require uninstalling every game. Reinstall the game only when file verification identifies damage or Ubisoft Support specifically directs it.

Offline mode may work for a previously authenticated, offline-capable single-player game whose files and entitlement are already cached. It cannot restore multiplayer, cloud synchronization, first-time activation, missing ownership, or a title requiring permanent online access. Ubisoft support has described switching offline and back online for certain ownership-verification cases, but that advice is context-specific (support example).
11. Console players
Do not use Windows cache paths or Command Prompt commands on PlayStation or Xbox. Fully close the game, restart the console, reboot the router, check Ubisoft and platform service status, test another network where possible, and review the console’s NAT and network-test results. Use the game’s current Ubisoft support page for console-specific ports and account-linking steps.
When to contact Ubisoft Support
Escalate when the error persists across a second network, after cache and launcher repair, or when browser login and ownership cannot be confirmed. Use Ubisoft’s support routing and provide:

- Ubisoft username, account email, game title, and platform.
- The complete error text or code, not just “Connection Lost.”
- Date and approximate time, screenshots, and whether website login works.
- Whether a hotspot or another network works.
- The steps already attempted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Uplay still available?
Uplay was rebranded as Ubisoft Connect in 2020. Current PC instructions and downloads use the Ubisoft Connect name.
Will clearing the cache delete my games?
Renaming the launcher’s cache folder rebuilds temporary data and should not remove installed games or account ownership.
Should I disable IPv6 or forward ports?
Neither is a first-line fix. Test another network and confirm router or NAT symptoms first; use IPv6 changes only diagnostically and consult the affected game’s current support page for ports.
Why does a hotspot work when Wi-Fi does not?
That points toward the home router, ISP, DNS, filtering, NAT, or IPv6 configuration rather than the game installation.
Can offline mode fix Connection Lost?
Only for previously authenticated games that support offline play. It cannot provide multiplayer, first activation, cloud synchronization, or permanently online features.
