upnp.dll Won’t Load on Windows 11 or 10: Safe Repair Guide

“The program can’t start because upnp.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “upnp.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed because upnp.dll was not found,” or a Bad Image message.

upnp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component named Universal Plug and Play API. It is associated with Windows APIs that discover, control, and host Universal Plug and Play devices, not with a particular game, DirectX, Visual C++ Redistributable, or .NET installation.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The safest repair is to let Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker restore the protected Windows component, then repair the individual application if only one program is affected.

Which fix applies to you

Use the symptom that best matches your situation:

  • Several programs fail, or the error names C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64: repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC.
  • Only one game or application fails: verify or repair that program before replacing Windows files.
  • The error started after an antivirus detection: inspect Protection history and run a malware scan. Do not restore the file blindly.
  • The file exists but the program still will not launch: check whether the application is loading a different local copy, using the wrong architecture, or missing another dependency.
  • The issue began after cloning, restoring, updating, or migrating Windows: try System Restore after completing the basic repair steps.
  • DISM and SFC cannot repair the component: use Windows’ repair reinstall or another recovery option.

What is upnp.dll

Microsoft documents UPnP as a Windows API with functionality for applications acting as device control points and for applications hosting network devices. The relevant API documentation is available in Microsoft’s UPnP APIs and UPnP API overview.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

The related Windows services include:

  • SSDP Discovery, which discovers network devices and services using SSDP.
  • UPnP Device Host, which allows compatible devices to be hosted on the computer.

These services are separate from the DLL itself. Disabling a UPnP service can prevent device discovery, but it does not normally explain why Windows reports that upnp.dll is missing.

upnp.dll is a protected Windows component. It should not normally be treated like a standalone game dependency that you copy into an application folder.

Where should upnp.dll be located

On 64-bit Windows:

  • The native 64-bit Windows copy is normally under %WINDIR%System32.
  • The 32-bit Windows copy is normally under %WINDIR%SysWOW64.

The names are confusing by design. Microsoft’s File System Redirector documentation explains that System32 is used for 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

Do not copy the file between these folders. A 64-bit operating system can still run 32-bit applications, and the affected program’s architecture matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the file:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter %WINDIR%System32.
  4. Search for upnp.dll.
  5. Right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.

Repeat the check in %WINDIR%SysWOW64 if the failing program is 32-bit. The presence of a file does not prove it is healthy, correctly signed, or the copy being loaded by the application.

Historical file listings may show different Windows versions, architectures, and sizes, including 32-bit and 64-bit builds. Those values are not universal requirements. Windows builds can ship different component versions, so do not replace your copy simply because its version or size differs from an online listing.

Fix 1: Update Windows and repair its components

This is the best first repair when multiple programs fail or the message points to a Windows directory. Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running SFC.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

An interrupted update or damaged component store can leave a protected DLL unavailable even when other Windows features appear normal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses to restore protected files. The process can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window simply because the percentage has not changed recently.

When DISM completes, note the result. A successful repair means Windows found and repaired component-store problems, but you should still run SFC.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

The useful outcomes are:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the escalation steps below instead of downloading upnp.dll.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and run the command again from an administrator Command Prompt.

Restart after SFC, then launch the program that produced the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM followed by SFC remains the supported first-line repair for a Windows component.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If Windows works normally and only one game or program reports upnp.dll, the application installation may be damaged. The error can name a Windows DLL even when the application has a bad installation, a damaged update, or a conflicting local file.

Verify a game through its launcher

Use the launcher’s built-in file check. The wording differs between Steam, Epic Games, Xbox, and other launchers, but the process generally looks like this:

  1. Open the launcher.
  2. Find the affected game in your library.
  3. Open its menu or Manage page.
  4. Select Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
  5. Wait for the check to complete.
  6. Allow the launcher to redownload damaged files.
  7. Restart the launcher and test the game.

Do not copy a downloaded upnp.dll into the game directory. If the game included an application-local dependency, verification or reinstallation restores the correct files together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a Windows application

For a compatible Windows app:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application when the repair finishes.

If Repair does not help and the option is available, use Reset. Resetting can remove the application’s local data and settings, so back up anything important first.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official source or its official launcher. This is the definitive fix when the problem belongs to that particular program.

Fix 3: Check architecture and local DLL copies

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not necessarily load the same system file. A 64-bit Windows installation can run both types of programs.

First determine the failing program’s architecture:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Start the affected application if it opens far enough to appear.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Select Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform, if available.

You can also check the application’s documentation or installer. Do not infer the application architecture only from the Windows architecture.

Then inspect the application folder. A damaged application-local copy of upnp.dll can take precedence over the Windows copy because Windows uses a defined DLL search order. Microsoft describes this behavior in its DLL search order documentation.

Do not delete or replace an application-local DLL casually. Instead:

  1. Close the program and its launcher.
  2. Open the application’s installation folder.
  3. Search for upnp.dll.
  4. If you find a local copy, note its location and check its Properties.
  5. Use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
  6. If necessary, reinstall the application so its files are restored as a matching set.

Do not copy the file from another computer, another Windows installation, or a different Windows build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware

Security software can quarantine a file after detecting suspicious behavior. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malware, and it does not automatically prove that the detection was a false positive.

To inspect Microsoft Defender’s records:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand any entry associated with upnp.dll.
  6. Check the detected path, threat name, and action taken.

Only restore a quarantined file after confirming that it is the genuine Windows file and that the detection is a false positive. For a system DLL, repairing Windows with DISM and SFC is safer than restoring an uncertain file manually.

Run a scan as follows:

  1. In Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Scan options.
  3. Run a Full scan.
  4. Follow Microsoft Defender’s recommendations.

If malware is suspected or a normal scan cannot remove it, use Microsoft Defender Offline from the same scan-options screen. Microsoft provides additional guidance for malware detection and removal problems.

Fix 5: Check UPnP services without confusing them with the DLL

The Windows services associated with UPnP can affect network-device discovery, but enabling a service does not replace a missing or corrupt DLL.

To inspect them:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find SSDP Discovery.
  5. Find UPnP Device Host.
  6. Check each service’s status and startup type.

If you use network discovery or compatible devices, follow Microsoft’s Windows service guidance before changing a service. Do not use this step as a substitute for DISM and SFC, and do not enable every service simply because an application mentions UPnP.

Fix 6: Update a driver only when the diagnosis points to one

A display-driver reinstall is not a normal fix for a upnp.dll error. It becomes relevant only if the same failure also identifies a graphics, network, chipset, or other hardware driver component.

To check a suspected driver:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the hardware category related to the error.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or uninstall and reinstall the driver from the hardware maker’s official source, depending on what changed before the error.

Do not remove random devices in Device Manager to fix upnp.dll. If the error names only upnp.dll, repair Windows or the affected application first.

Outbyte Driver Updater can make the manual process of checking many driver versions easier: its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is performed by the full version. Use it only when a driver problem is actually indicated, because it is not a replacement for Windows component repair.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

Do not run this as a general repair:

regsvr32 upnp.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft explains the resulting errors in its DllRegisterServer troubleshooting guidance.

upnp.dll should be repaired through Windows servicing, SFC, DISM, or application repair. Manually registering it is unlikely to restore a missing, corrupt, blocked, or wrong-architecture file.

Why Visual C++ and DirectX usually do not fix it

The Visual C++ Redistributable supplies C and C++ runtime libraries for applications built with Microsoft’s compiler. Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable documentation explains that the package architecture must match the application.

Install or repair Visual C++ only when the error also names a file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, or when the application’s official requirements specifically call for it. It does not replace the Windows UPnP API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DirectX is similarly unrelated unless the error names a DirectX component. Installing either package will not repair a damaged Windows upnp.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, disk migration, clone restoration, or other system change.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the matching result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
  9. Restart Windows when prompted.

System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 8: Repair Windows when DISM and SFC fail

If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not substitute a DLL from another machine. Review the CBS log if you need detailed diagnostics, then escalate to a Windows repair option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 11, where the option is available:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
  7. Follow the prompts.

Microsoft says this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. Details are available in Microsoft’s Windows repair reinstall instructions.

If that option is unavailable, back up important files and review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. Resetting Windows or using installation media is a larger intervention and should not be the first response to an error affecting only one application.

For offline repair from Windows Recovery Environment, first confirm the drive letter assigned to the Windows installation. It may not be C: in recovery mode. The syntax is:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows

Replace C: with the confirmed Windows drive letter. Microsoft documents these offline SFC switches in its System File Checker reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid websites offering individual copies of upnp.dll. A downloaded DLL can have:

  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Missing dependencies
  • An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
  • Malware or unwanted modifications
  • A version that does not match the component store

It may also hide the real problem, such as application corruption, a damaged Windows image, malware interference, or a DLL search-path conflict. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, the affected application’s official launcher or installer, and Microsoft’s official recovery tools.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep Windows updates installed and restart after major servicing.
  • Use official game launchers and their file-verification features.
  • Do not copy system DLLs between computers or Windows builds.
  • Leave Microsoft Defender or another reputable security solution active.
  • Back up important files before system recovery or disk migration.
  • Avoid “DLL fixer” utilities that replace files without identifying the owning component.
  • If a program ships its own local DLLs, repair or reinstall the program instead of modifying the Windows folders.
  • Record whether the error affects one application or several before changing system settings.

FAQ

Is upnp.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. upnp.dll is associated with Microsoft’s Windows UPnP API and is normally a protected Windows component. Check its path and digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.

Is upnp.dll malware?

The legitimate Windows file is not malware, but malware can use a similar filename or replace a file in an unexpected location. Inspect the path, signature, antivirus detection, and scan results before restoring or trusting it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file exists. Why does Windows still say it is missing?

The application may be loading a different local copy, the file may be corrupt, the application may require another missing dependency, or the available copy may not match the application architecture. Repair Windows and the affected application rather than copying the file elsewhere.

Should I copy upnp.dll into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Windows owns those protected locations. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files. Copying a random DLL can make the problem worse.

Should I enable UPnP Device Host?

Only if you need the related device-host functionality. The service is not a general repair for a missing or corrupt upnp.dll.

Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?

Only if the error also names a corresponding runtime or graphics component, or the application’s official requirements specify it. Neither package replaces the Windows UPnP API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I register upnp.dll with regsvr32?

No general repair benefit is established for this file. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or application repair instead.

What if many unrelated DLLs show Bad Image errors?

That points to broader Windows servicing, disk, malware, or cloned-image corruption rather than one isolated upnp.dll problem. Back up your files, complete DISM and SFC, scan for malware, and consider System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall.

What if only one game still fails after SFC?

Use the game launcher’s Verify or Repair function, then reinstall the game if necessary. A program-specific failure usually requires repairing that program, even when the error message names a Windows DLL.
