Batocera can use a keyboard and mouse, but that does not make every retro game work like a desktop PC game. Whether both devices are useful depends on the game, its emulator, and how its controls are configured. You can build a Batocera setup around keyboard-and-mouse input, especially for DOS games and some native Linux ports, but expect to configure controls per use case rather than rely on one universal setting.
Choose the right Batocera image for your machine
Start by checking Batocera’s installation guide and supported-device list. The image must match the machine’s architecture: Batocera identifies x86_64 as the common choice for PCs, while other device families generally require their own image. Do not assume a particular computer is supported without checking the current list.
Prepare the installation media
The official guide describes flashing the image to a USB drive, SD card, hard drive, or SSD. It lists 16 GB as the minimum storage space and recommends 32 GB for full functionality; these are installation recommendations, not RAM requirements or a promise about how many games will fit. The guide also cautions that automatic updates are unavailable with only 16 GB.
- Download the image for your device from Batocera’s download section.
- Use an imaging utility to write it to the intended USB drive, SD card, hard drive, or SSD. Flashing erases the selected destination, so verify the target device before starting.
- Connect the media to the machine and boot from it. On a PC, you may need the machine’s boot-selection menu; the key varies by manufacturer. Batocera’s guide prefers UEFI where available and notes that Secure Boot may need attention.
- On first boot, allow Batocera to expand the userdata partition. The system reboots after the expansion.
Connect the keyboard and mouse, then configure for the game
Batocera’s per-emulator remapping guide treats configured physical devices broadly: a keyboard or mouse, like a conventional gamepad, can be used as an input device. That is not the same as universal game compatibility. A title may expect a gamepad, a keyboard, a mouse, or a particular combination, and the available mapping depends on the emulator.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There are also different configuration paths for different DOSBox setups. Pad2Key settings for standalone DOSBox do not automatically apply to the libretro DOSBox Pure core. The remapping guide directs DOSBox Pure users to its custom keyboard binding mode instead, so choose instructions for the emulator you are actually running.
For DOS games, begin with DOSBox Pure
Batocera’s MS-DOS guide recommends DOSBox Pure for new users because it requires less setup than standalone DOSBox. DOSBox Pure offers multiple controller choices for both controller slots:

- Gravis GamePad
- Generic keyboard binds
- Keyboard and mouse, with the mouse assigned to the left analog stick
- Keyboard and mouse, with the mouse assigned to the right analog stick
- Joystick modes
- Custom keyboard binds
These are emulator options, not a guarantee that every DOS game will use keyboard and mouse in the same way. Select a mode that matches the game’s expected controls, then adjust bindings if needed. Standalone DOSBox is another route, but it requires per-game preparation.
For native Linux ports, plan for title-specific setup
Batocera’s native Linux ports guide says many games require a physical USB keyboard for initial in-game setup. Its example also shows the mouse cursor during setup, then hides it after the game starts. Neither detail means every port has the same configuration: dependencies, scripts, and input requirements vary by title, and some games need additional setup.

What to expect from other systems and PC ports
Keyboard-and-mouse support is not a single Batocera-wide compatibility switch. The relevant questions are which game you are launching, which emulator or port runs it, and whether that software accepts native keyboard-and-mouse input or needs controls mapped to a virtual controller. A community question about PC ports, MAME, and other titles reflects a common uncertainty, but it does not establish how any particular game behaves.
For a specific title, consult its Batocera system or port instructions and use the matching emulator’s input settings. If the game was designed for a controller, a keyboard mapping may be possible but can feel different from native keyboard-and-mouse play; if it is a port, it may need its own first-run configuration.

Quick setup decision guide
| Use case | Starting point | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Batocera on a PC | Use the x86_64 image if the machine is supported. | Confirm the model in the supported-device list; boot-menu keys vary and Secure Boot may need attention. |
| DOS game, new to Batocera | Start with DOSBox Pure. | Choose generic keyboard binds or a keyboard-and-mouse mode; mouse assignment can use either analog stick. |
| Standalone DOSBox | Follow its separate per-game setup path. | Its Pad2Key configuration is not interchangeable with DOSBox Pure’s custom keyboard binding mode. |
| Native Linux port | Follow the instructions for that port. | A USB keyboard may be needed for initial setup, and dependencies and input configuration vary by title. |
