V Rising has no traditional XP leveling bar: your Gear Level comes from your equipped equipment. Gather materials, build and improve crafting stations, and defeat V Blood bosses to unlock stronger gear and abilities. Use the Blood Altar to choose a target, then check its recommended Gear Level before taking it on. This guide focuses on the early progression loop; exact recipes and routes can vary with updates and server settings.
How progression works
In V Rising, progression is built around equipment, crafting, and boss unlocks rather than earning ordinary character XP. Stunlock’s leveling guide, updated July 7, 2025, explains that your Gear Level is based on equipped items. Better gear raises that level, while defeating V Blood bosses unlocks recipes and abilities that open further progression.
For example, the official guide contrasts a Bone Sword at Gear Level 2 with a Copper Sword at Gear Level 6. Those are example values for those weapons, not a promise about your total Gear Level or every server’s settings.
A practical route through the opening hours
Follow the Journal objectives as you gather what you need to survive and establish a work area. The sequence below is a useful orientation, not a mandatory route; crafting details can change between versions, so check the live in-game recipes.

- Awaken as a Vampire. Hunt for blood in nearby settlements to regain your strength and evade the scorching sun to survive.
- Raise your castle and thrive in an ever-changing, open world full of mystery. Gain allies online and conquer the land of the living.
- Gather and make basic equipment. Start with the early materials and bone gear indicated by your Journal objectives. Put together a first work area and the crafting stations available to you.
- Build toward the Blood Altar. Defeat the V Blood targets that unlock the Blood Altar and its progression tracking. The Altar helps you identify bosses and see the rewards they unlock.
- Choose a reachable boss. Select a target at the Blood Altar and compare your current Gear Level with the recommended level shown for that boss.
- Improve gear and stations when needed. If you are under the recommended level, gather materials, upgrade crafting stations, and make better equipment before trying again.
- Use early milestones as a guide, not a checklist. A walkthrough updated July 10, 2026, suggests moving from basic bone equipment and an initial castle to the Alpha Wolf, then copper gear and later iron progression. Treat that as one practical route; the official progression guidance centers on crafting and V Blood unlocks rather than requiring that exact order.
How to prepare for a V Blood boss
Use the Blood Altar to pick a target whose unlocks fit your next step, then check the boss’s recommended Gear Level. If your current level is below that recommendation, make equipment upgrades and improve the stations needed to craft them before committing to the fight. The official leveling guidance identifies boss recommendations as a useful readiness check; it does not make a particular fight strategy universal.
- Track the boss and its unlocks at the Blood Altar.
- Compare the recommended Gear Level with your current equipped gear.
- Gather materials and craft upgrades if you are underpowered.
What changed in update 1.1
Stunlock’s 1.1 patch notes, published April 28, 2025, document additions and changes that matter when reading older guides. The update introduced contest duels using Dueling Banners and castle Arenas, and added castle systems including Stables, a Redistribution Engine, a Blood Homogenizer, a Fusion Forge, and a Treasury. The Treasury lets containers in its area contribute to territory inventory, so crafting and building can draw on those materials without manually retrieving them.
Version 1.1 also introduced weapon and jewel fusion and changed passive progression: boss defeats unlock passive slots, with up to five passives equipped. These details describe that update, not a claim that 1.1 is the current version; the official site lists later news, including a May 13, 2026 post about Patch Notes 1.1.1, without establishing every subsequent change here.

Choose a platform and input that suit you
Stunlock’s official game site lists Steam and PlayStation 5 and describes solo and online play. The official launch update page establishes PC gamepad support. A controller is an optional input choice, not a requirement; these sources do not establish a required controller model.
