For world-generation and preparation advice, Iron Gate’s March 26, 2024 guide remains the key source: it recommends a new world for the best experience and warns that extensively explored Ashlands may not generate the new content properly.
What changed in the Ashlands update?
Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 patch notes, published September 9, 2026, include the line: “Rebalanced enemy spawn chance in Ashlands.” The notes do not identify the affected enemies, say whether their chances increased or decreased, or quantify the change. It is therefore not possible to infer a particular enemy encounter or difficulty adjustment from that entry alone.
The official Valheim news listing also showed patch 1.0.17 dated October 6, 2026. Its full notes are not established here, so it should not be treated as confirmation of any additional Ashlands changes.
Do you need a new world for Ashlands?
Not necessarily, but Iron Gate recommends starting a new world for the best experience. Its March 26, 2024 “Getting Ready for the Ashlands” guide says new content generates properly in areas that have not previously been explored. If you have explored much of Ashlands already, the update may not generate properly in those areas.

What happened to Ashlands terrain and access?
In its March 2024 preparation guide, Iron Gate said the surrounding terrain was lowered and turned into ocean, making Ashlands accessible only by ship. The guide also warned that player-built structures on terrain that was altered could collapse. This is published guidance about the Ashlands update; it should not be read as a fresh verification of every implementation detail in the latest version.

Defeat the Queen in the Mistlands
Iron Gate recommends defeating the Queen before travelling to Ashlands. The item she drops is useful in the biome, so completing that progression first can make the journey more practical.

Plan for a difficult biome
The studio describes Ashlands as the game’s penultimate biome. If you are rusty, its guide suggests practising or adjusting World Modifiers to suit your preferred challenge.
Disable mods before updating
Iron Gate warns that updates can break mods. Its recommended approach is to disable mods and remove BepInEx or another mod loader before updating. If you want to keep playing with mods, wait for their authors to release compatible updates.
