Find your first turnip seeds in the Swamp: pick wild turnip flowers, then use a Cultivator on cultivated ground to grow them. Each seed produces one turnip; plant a harvested turnip with the Cultivator’s Seed-Turnip option to get three seeds and expand your supply.
Where to find turnip seeds
Explore the Swamp and look for wild turnip flowers. Picking one yields turnip seeds, which you need to start a farm. The Valheim – EN community wiki’s Turnip Seeds reference says they can be harder to find than carrot seeds because water-covered Swamp terrain leaves fewer places for them to appear. That is a qualitative explanation, not a measured spawn rate or a guaranteed route. Picked wild seed plants do not respawn, so continue searching elsewhere in the Swamp if you need more.
How to grow turnips and multiply your seeds
- Prepare the soil. Use the Cultivator to create cultivated ground; turnip seeds must be planted in it.
- Plant turnip seeds. Select the seed and plant it on the cultivated ground. Each planted seed grows into one turnip.
- Wait for the crop to grow. The community reference lists a growth time of 4,000–5,000 seconds, or about 66 minutes 40 seconds to 83 minutes 20 seconds. The page does not identify a game version, so treat this as a reference value rather than a guarantee for every build.
- Convert some harvest into seed stock. With the Cultivator, select Seed-Turnip and plant a harvested turnip. It grows into a seed plant that yields three turnip seeds.
- Repeat or cook. Use the seeds to enlarge your crop, and set aside turnips for recipes if you want them for cooking.
The Cultivator reference lists Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Plains, and Mistlands as suitable biomes for growing turnips.
What to do with harvested turnips
Turnips are ingredients for turnip stew and black soup. They cannot be eaten raw, according to the Turnip item reference. When your harvest is small, decide how many turnips to reserve for Seed-Turnip planting and how many to use in recipes.
