Work through these low-risk checks in order: restart Windows, update Windows and drivers, verify the game files in Steam, isolate background software, and compare your PC with Valheim’s minimum requirements. The crash stage, error message, game version, mods, and PC configuration all affect what to try next.
1. Restart Windows and install updates
Save your work, restart the PC, then try launching Valheim again from Steam. Steam’s general launch guidance starts with troubleshooting after a fresh restart and notes that games can fail for multiple reasons that vary by system; it is not a Valheim-specific diagnosis or guaranteed repair. Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting explains that games may crash immediately after launching.
If it still will not launch, install available Windows updates and updates for your computer’s drivers, then restart and test once more. This is a basic diagnostic check; it does not establish that an outdated driver caused the crash.
2. Verify Valheim’s files in Steam
Steam lists corrupted extracted game files as one possible cause of games failing to launch. Verify Valheim’s installation before trying more disruptive changes:

- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Valheim and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
- When Steam is done, try launching the game again.
The wording or location of Steam controls can change. If the check reports a problem and replaces files, retry the game after it completes.
3. Test whether background software is interfering
Temporarily close non-essential background software and retry Valheim. This can help isolate a conflict, but a successful launch with those apps closed is evidence to investigate—not proof that a particular overlay or program is responsible.

- Close apps you do not need for the test, including optional overlays or recording utilities if you use them.
- Retry the game without changing several other settings at the same time.
- If Valheim launches, reopen the apps one at a time and test again to identify whether one correlates with the crash.
4. Compare your PC with the Windows minimum requirements
Steam’s Valheim technical listing reports the following Windows minimums, captured in 2026. These are a baseline, not a guarantee that the game will launch successfully on every system that meets them.

Check Steam’s Valheim technical issue page for the listing. If your PC is below a listed minimum, note which requirement it misses when seeking help; do not assume that replacing a component will fix a crash without evidence about your system and the failure.

5. Check for version-specific problems and contact support
Make sure Valheim is updated through Steam, then consult Iron Gate’s support page for help articles, known issues, and bug-report options. A past Iron Gate patch archive entry dated 12 August 2022 records a crash issue the developer said had been fixed at that time. That historical fix shows that version-specific bugs can occur; it does not identify the cause of a current crash or establish that an old workaround applies. See the dated Valheim patch history rather than applying an old workaround to a current version.
If the checks do not resolve the problem, use Iron Gate’s support page to report a bug or browse its help articles. Steam’s Valheim support listing gives [email protected] as the developer contact. Include useful details so support can distinguish a crash before the menu from a later failure:

- The exact error text, if one appears.
- When the crash occurs: after clicking Play, during startup, or at another point before the main menu.
- Your Windows version and PC specifications.
- Whether the crash began after a Windows, driver, or game update.
- Whether you use mods.
- Which troubleshooting checks you tried and what happened.
