The VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) is the full Tier 1 competition system; “league play” is one regular-season phase within its regional International Leagues. They are not two competing formats at the same level. In 2026, league matches feed regional playoffs and, in Stage 2, Play-Ins, while the wider VCT calendar also includes Kickoff, Masters events and Champions. Riot has announced that regular-season league play will be replaced by tournament Cups starting in 2027, so that planned format is distinct from the 2026 rules.
VCT and league play: the core difference
| Comparison | VCT | League play |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | The Tier 1 competition system spanning Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China, with regional and international events. | The regular-season group phase inside an International League. |
| Calendar | In 2026, the season includes regional Kickoff, Masters Santiago, Stage 1, Masters London, Stage 2 and Champions Shanghai. | A stage-specific run of regional group matches that feeds into playoffs or, in Stage 2, Play-Ins. |
| 2026 match structure | Connects regional competition, global Masters events and the season-ending Champions event. | Each 12-team International League is split into two groups of six for a single round robin of best-of-three matches. |
| Advancement stakes | Championship Points and results across the season help determine qualification for Masters and Champions. | Group results determine playoff or Play-In access; Stage 1 match wins award Championship Points. |
| 2027 announced change | Riot plans to retain VCT but shift it to an all-tournament model. | Regular-season league play is planned to be replaced by Cups. |
The 2026 structure and season events are set out in Riot’s 2026 VALORANT Champions Tour League Handbook. The distinction matters: saying a team is in VCT describes its place in the wider Tier 1 system, while saying it is playing league play describes a particular phase of that system.
How 2026 league play works
Each of the four International Leagues has 12 teams. In both Stage 1 and Stage 2, teams are divided into two groups of six and play a single round robin: five best-of-three matches per team over five weeks. The groups are reshuffled between stages. The consequences of those matches differ by stage.
Stage 1: group results lead to playoffs
- The top four teams in each group advance to Stage 1 Playoffs; the bottom two are eliminated.
- Stage 1 match wins award Championship Points.
- The top three playoff finishers qualify for Masters London.
Stage 2: direct playoff places and Play-Ins
- The top two teams in each group advance directly to the eight-team Stage 2 Playoffs.
- The other eight International League teams enter double-elimination Play-Ins alongside the top four Challengers teams.
- Four teams survive Play-Ins and join the four direct qualifiers in the playoffs.
- The top two Stage 2 playoff teams and the two highest Championship Point earners qualify for Champions Shanghai.
These are separate routes through the season: Stage 2 group placement can earn direct playoff entry or a Play-In place, while Championship Points also matter for Champions qualification. Riot’s 2026 handbook is the source for these rules and event names.

Where league play fits in the wider VCT season
League play is not the entire VCT calendar. Riot’s 2026 handbook lists regional Kickoff, the global Masters Santiago event, regional Stage 1, Masters London, regional Stage 2 and Champions Shanghai. The International League regular seasons sit inside the two regional stages; the Masters events and Champions are separate international events in the same overall competition system.
How Challengers relates to the International Leagues
Challengers is a distinct competitive route toward the higher tier, not another name for the VCT International League regular season. In Stage 2, the top four Challengers teams enter the Play-Ins alongside the eight International League teams that did not earn direct playoff places.

Riot’s ACE VALORANT Challengers NA 2026 announcement describes a North American system with three stages, each featuring a 16-team Swiss stage and top-eight double-elimination playoffs. It specifies best-of-three Swiss matches and best-of-five lower finals and grand finals, with promotion and relegation after Stages 1 and 2. The announcement also describes a route toward VCT Americas Stage 2 through Challengers performance and a regional Last Chance Qualifier. Those mechanics are specific to the cited NA announcement; they should not be assumed to apply identically in every territory.

On April 8, 2026, Riot announced a planned shift to an all-tournament VCT model for 2027. Open qualifiers will feed two Cups per territory each year, eight Cups in total. Riot says Cups will replace regular-season league play, conclude with finals weekends and directly qualify teams to Masters and Champions. In the announcement, Riot summarizes the change as: “Each Cup: Replaces regular season league play.”

The 2027 plan should not be confused with the 2026 season format described above. Riot says further specifics, including regional calendars and slot allocations, will be shared later; those details are not established in the announcement. Riot also said that “over $86M” was shared from digital goods with VCT teams, describing the period as “last year” without naming a calendar year in that sentence.
