VAN 84 means Riot Vanguard usually could not verify that your PC was ready to run VALORANT or encountered an initialization problem. Riot’s prescribed fix is to work through Windows and Vanguard checks first, then try a clean boot, reinstalling the game, and network troubleshooting—launching VALORANT after each step.
What does VALORANT error VAN 84 mean?
The full message is: “Connection Error: VALORANT has encountered a connection error. Please relaunch the client to reconnect. Error Code: VAN 84.” Although the message mentions a connection error, Riot Games Player Support says VAN 84 “usually means Riot Vanguard couldn’t verify that your PC is ready to run the game or encountered an issue while initializing.” That is Riot’s general explanation, not proof of the cause on any individual PC. Riot’s VAN 84 support article, dated July 17, 2026, provides the troubleshooting sequence below.
How to fix VAN 84, in Riot’s recommended order
Complete each step, then launch VALORANT to check whether the error is gone. If it persists, continue to the next step rather than making several changes at once.

Install Windows updates and restart
Install available Windows updates, then restart the PC. Riot notes that updates can include security and system-service changes Vanguard relies on.

Set the Vanguard service to start automatically
Unless you use Vanguard Pre-Check to enable Vanguard on demand, set the
vgcservice to start automatically. To do this in Windows, pressWin + R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. Find vgc, open its properties, set Startup type to Automatic, and select Start if the service is stopped. Apply the change and restart the PC if Windows requests it. Then launch VALORANT. -
Uninstall and reinstall Riot Vanguard
Manually uninstall Riot Vanguard through Windows’ installed-apps settings, restart the PC, and launch VALORANT. Riot says the game will reinstall Vanguard. Follow any prompts, then check whether the game starts without VAN 84.

Try a clean boot
Riot recommends a clean boot to identify whether a background app or service is interfering with Vanguard. Use Riot’s clean-boot instructions, then test VALORANT. If it works in a clean boot, investigate conflicting startup apps or services before returning to normal startup.

Reinstall VALORANT
Riot says reinstalling the game can replace corrupted or missing files that stop VALORANT or Vanguard from launching correctly. Uninstall VALORANT using Windows’ app settings, restart if prompted, reinstall it from Riot, and test again.

Check the network connection
If the earlier steps do not help, follow Riot’s PC connection troubleshooting guide. The linked version is in Polish; menu names and options may differ by Windows version and region.
Network checks if VAN 84 remains
Riot’s network guide starts with basic Wi-Fi and network checks and the Windows network troubleshooter. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet if you can; this helps determine whether the wireless connection is involved, but it is a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix. The guide also covers DNS changes, renewing the IP address, firewall rules, and port forwarding.

- Start with low-risk checks: restart your PC and network equipment, confirm other devices can access the internet, and run the Windows network troubleshooter.
- Compare connections: if possible, test VALORANT on a wired connection or another network. If other devices also have trouble, the issue may extend beyond the game PC; this comparison alone does not establish the cause.
- Treat router changes as optional: change DNS, firewall settings, or port forwarding only if you understand the setting and can restore it. Riot’s guide warns that some internet providers block third-party DNS; revert the DNS change if you lose access.
When to check for an outage or contact Riot
Do not assume VAN 84 means Riot’s servers are down. Riot’s general VALORANT error-code page says its list is currently out of date and directs players to support banners and Discord for emergent issues. Check Riot’s current notices for your region before treating an outage as the explanation.
If you have completed Riot’s steps and VAN 84 still appears, submit a Player Support ticket and attach logs as Riot requests. Riot does not promise a particular resolution time or outcome.
