Valve Announces Steam Deck OLED: More Storage, Bigger Battery, Same Performance Class

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve announced Steam Deck OLED on November 9, 2023, and began selling it on November 16. At launch, the 512GB model cost $549 and the 1TB model cost $649. The OLED is a substantial refresh of the original Steam Deck—not a Steam Deck 2: its most meaningful gains are the display, battery life, wireless connectivity and quality-of-life refinements, rather than a major increase in gaming performance. GamesBeat reported the launch details; Valve’s official specifications describe the hardware changes.

Steam Deck OLED price and release date

The OLED model went on sale November 16, 2023, in two built-in storage configurations:

  • 512GB OLED: $549 at launch.
  • 1TB OLED: $649 at launch.

Those are launch prices, not a statement of current U.S. pricing. As of August 18, 2026, Valve’s OLED page listed the models as shipping and displayed prices of €919 for 512GB and €1,019 for 1TB in the regional version accessed for this article. Pricing, stock and delivery depend on country and checkout region; those euro prices should not be read as U.S. prices. Check Valve’s product page for the listing applicable to your location.

When Valve announced the OLED, it said the 64GB and 512GB LCD models would be phased out, discounted and sold while supplies lasted. Inventory and timing varied by region, so that announcement does not mean every LCD configuration vanished everywhere at once. GamesBeat’s announcement coverage records the phase-out context.

What changed in the Steam Deck OLED?

A larger, brighter OLED display

The screen grows from 7 inches to 7.4 inches and switches from LCD to HDR OLED. It retains the LCD model’s 1280×800 resolution, but supports refresh rates up to 90Hz and peak brightness up to 1,000 nits. OLED’s pixel-level lighting enables deeper blacks and higher contrast; HDR can add impact in compatible games. The larger screen, panel technology, HDR capability and refresh rate—not more pixels—are the display upgrades. HDR results depend on game and software support.

A 90Hz screen can show supported content more smoothly, but it does not make a game render at 90 frames per second. Frame rate still depends on the game and its settings, as well as the Deck’s performance limits.

A larger battery and more efficient internals

The OLED has a 50Wh battery, compared with 40Wh in the LCD model—a 25% increase in capacity. Valve also moved from a 7nm to a 6nm APU process and revised the internal design. The OLED model weighs about 640g, around 29g less than the approximately 669g LCD model. Valve says the updated thermal design includes a larger fan; that specification alone does not establish a particular temperature or noise reduction in every game.

Faster wireless, memory and charging

Valve lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on the OLED, versus Wi-Fi 5 on the LCD model. Wi-Fi 6E can help with downloads and latency on a compatible network, but real-world results depend on the router, connection and surrounding conditions. Valve advertises downloads up to three times faster under suitable conditions; it is not a guaranteed speed for every network.

VALVE Steam Deck OLED 512GB SSD + 16GB RAM (International Version) - 7.4"" inch, 90Hz, 1280 x 800px, SteamOS 3.0, Handheld Gaming Console, Black
  • International (UK) Version
  • 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
  • SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
  • 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32

Both models have 16GB of memory, but Valve specifies 6400 MT/s for OLED and 5500 MT/s for LCD. The OLED’s included charging cable is 2.5m rather than 1.5m, and Valve says it can charge from 20% to 80% in as little as 45 minutes. Actual charge times vary with conditions.

Storage, controls and repair refinements

OLED launched with 512GB and 1TB internal-storage options, rather than the LCD line’s 64GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations. Every Deck supports microSD expansion, so built-in capacity is not the only way to carry a larger library. Valve also lists improved touchscreen polling, speakers and trackpads, revised haptics and easier internal access. Its repair notes describe fewer screw types, metal-threaded Torx rear screws, a changed display-repair path and a joystick-board layout intended to simplify bumper repair. These changes improve access; they do not make opening the device risk-free, and Valve qualifies repair and modification guidance for trained professionals. Full specifications and repair notes are on Valve’s OLED page.

Is the Steam Deck OLED faster?

Not in the way a new performance generation would be. OLED retains the Steam Deck’s broad CPU and GPU architecture and 16GB memory capacity. Its 6nm APU and faster memory are part of a more efficient revision, not evidence of a universal frame-rate increase. The 90Hz panel can present supported games and interface animations more smoothly when performance allows, but it does not raise the device’s rendering capability by itself.

  • 【Responsive Touch & Enhanced Connectivity】 Enjoy a vastly improved touchscreen with higher fidelity and faster haptics. We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

Game performance varies with the title, resolution, graphics settings, power limits and whether the Deck is plugged in. Buyers should choose OLED for its screen and other refinements, not on the expectation of a major graphics or frame-rate leap over LCD.

How much longer does the battery last?

Valve estimates approximately 3–12 hours for OLED, compared with 2–8 hours for LCD, and advertises 30–50% longer battery life. These are broad, content-dependent estimates, not fixed runtimes or a promise that every game gains the same amount. Lightweight games and modest settings are more likely to approach the high end; demanding modern games can use power quickly and fall toward the low end.

Brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate caps, power settings, wireless use and background activity also affect runtime. Treat the 12-hour figure as a best-case part of Valve’s range, not an expectation for demanding games.

Should Steam Deck LCD owners upgrade?

OLED is a strong fit if you value the handheld experience

  • You play handheld often and want the larger, higher-contrast HDR screen.
  • You travel or play away from an outlet and would benefit from the larger battery and efficiency changes.
  • You want more built-in space: 512GB or 1TB, especially if you keep several large games installed.
  • You play in bright surroundings, where the OLED’s listed brightness may be useful.
  • You value a lighter revision, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and the other hardware refinements.

Keeping the LCD model makes sense if it already fits

  • You are satisfied with its screen and mostly play docked, where the built-in display matters less.
  • You expect a major increase in frame rates or graphics quality; OLED is not that upgrade.
  • You have already installed a larger SSD or use a microSD card and do not need more built-in storage.
  • You can buy an LCD model at a substantial discount and prefer saving money to improving the display and battery.

Because all Deck models accept microSD cards, the 1TB model is not automatically the best value for every library. Consider how much you keep installed and whether removable storage meets your needs before paying for more internal capacity. Valve says microSD-installed games appear in the library automatically; see its storage and product information.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Is this the Steam Deck 2?

No. Valve announced OLED as a hardware revision of the first-generation Steam Deck, not a new performance generation. It improves the display, battery, wireless hardware, efficiency, thermals, weight and several smaller details while keeping the same general performance class. If the reason to wait is a substantially more powerful Deck, this model does not answer that need.

When might a Windows handheld be a better fit?

The Steam Deck is a PC built around SteamOS and Steam’s library, not a closed console. Compatibility layers let many PC games work, but individual games and launchers can have caveats: anti-cheat, required launchers, streaming requirements and Windows-only software can affect whether a title works well. Deck Verified is a useful compatibility signal, not a guarantee of ideal performance.

A Windows handheld may suit buyers who prioritize native Windows applications, Xbox Game Pass or access to other PC storefronts without SteamOS workarounds. ASUS positions the ROG Ally X around Windows 11, a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, up to 24GB of memory, up to 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery. Those specifications do not by themselves establish better results in every game, and Windows brings a different software and handheld-interface experience. Compare the trade-offs on ASUS’s official ROG Ally X page. Buyers who want SteamOS’s console-style interface and integrated Steam experience may prefer to stay with the Deck.
