Valve said in December 2025 that it had stopped producing the 256GB Steam Deck LCD and would stop selling it once remaining stock ran out. That removes Valve’s lowest-cost new Deck configuration as inventory dwindles, but availability has not ended everywhere at once: the LCD was still reported available in Australia in July 2026.

On Valve’s US comparison page, accessed October 8, 2026, the 256GB LCD was listed at $789 and the 512GB OLED at $949. These are dated US prices, not a guarantee of local stock or current prices elsewhere.

What happened to the Steam Deck LCD?

The change announced in December 2025 was a production phaseout of the 256GB LCD model, followed by the sale of remaining units—not an announcement that every region would run out immediately. GamingOnLinux reported that the Steam store notice read: “Note: We are no longer producing the Steam Deck LCD 256GB model. Once sold out, it will no longer be available.” The report said the notice appeared on the US and UK store pages it checked; it was store-page wording, not a separate broad press announcement.

Inventory has varied by region. PC Gamer reported in July 2026 that the LCD was still available in Australia. That is a dated report, not confirmation of current Australian stock. Check the Steam store for your region before treating the model as unavailable or available to buy new.

What is the cheapest Steam Deck now?

Valve’s US comparison page, accessed October 8, 2026, listed the 256GB LCD at $789 and the 512GB OLED at $949. The figures are a dated US snapshot; Valve’s page warns that specifications can change, and a product listing does not establish local inventory. The earlier LCD phaseout notice also means a listed model may not be available to order in every region.

Model US listed price on Oct. 8, 2026 Display Storage Connectivity Valve battery estimate
256GB LCD $789 7-inch, 1280×800 LCD, up to 60Hz 256GB NVMe Wi-Fi 5 40Wh; 2–8 hours, depending on content
512GB OLED $949 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz 512GB NVMe Wi-Fi 6E 50Wh; 3–12 hours, depending on content
1TB OLED Check Valve’s live page 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz 1TB NVMe Wi-Fi 6E 50Wh; 3–12 hours, depending on content

These battery figures are Valve’s content-dependent estimates, not independent test results. Valve says the 1TB OLED has premium anti-glare etched glass. See Valve’s Steam Deck comparison page for its current regional offering and specifications.

What do buyers give up by choosing the LCD—or gain with OLED?

At the listed US prices, the LCD was $160 less than the 512GB OLED, but also had half the storage. The OLED specification adds a 7.4-inch HDR screen with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz, Wi-Fi 6E, and a 50Wh battery; the LCD has a 7-inch screen up to 60Hz, Wi-Fi 5, and a 40Wh battery. Those are differences in Valve’s published specifications, not a claim about how much better every game will look or how long a particular game will run.

All Steam Deck models support microSD expansion, according to Valve. That can add storage, but it does not change the built-in storage capacity or restore the LCD’s former price tier. Valve also names its Steam Deck Docking Station as an option for connecting peripherals and displays.

Why this is a blow to budget handheld buyers

The practical impact is straightforward: as remaining LCD units disappear, buyers seeking the lowest upfront price for a new Steam Deck lose that configuration and may face the higher-priced OLED models instead. It is a blow to the entry-level choice within Valve’s own lineup, not proof that affordable handheld gaming has disappeared or that the whole market has become less affordable. No year-specific sales or affordability statistic establishes the broader market effect.

If you are comparing other handhelds, check current prices and availability in your country, and compare display, built-in storage, battery estimates, and connectivity. Also distinguish new stock from used or refurbished listings; an old LCD listing does not necessarily mean Valve still has new units for sale. The available information does not establish a particular third-party handheld as a like-for-like lower-cost replacement.

Did rising component costs cause the LCD phaseout?

The available statements do not establish that. In May 2026, Valve explained a later OLED price increase by citing the current state of component costs and global logistical challenges; Tom’s Hardware also quoted Valve’s shorter reference to rising memory and storage costs. That explanation concerns the 2026 price change, not the documented reason for the 2025 LCD production decision. Do not treat the two events as having a confirmed common cause.
