Valve’s three-part Steam hardware lineup is no longer just a future announcement. As of August 18, 2026, the Steam Machine is listed at $1,049 in the U.S. Steam catalog, the redesigned Steam Controller is listed at $99 but remains constrained by reservation queues, and the Steam Frame is still marked “Coming soon” with no confirmed public price.
Valve announced all three products on November 12, 2025. The lineup consists of a SteamOS living-room PC, a wireless-capable VR headset, and a controller built around Steam Input, trackpads, gyro aiming, and PC-style flexibility.
Valve’s new Steam hardware lineup
Valve revealed the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and new Steam Controller as a coordinated ecosystem rather than three unrelated devices. All are designed around Steam’s library, SteamOS, Proton, Steam Input, and the company’s Verified compatibility programs.
- Steam Machine: a compact SteamOS gaming PC for televisions, monitors, and desks.
- Steam Frame: a wireless VR headset that can run selected software locally and stream demanding VR or non-VR games from another PC.
- Steam Controller: a hybrid gamepad and mouse-oriented PC controller for Steam Deck, Steam Machine, PC, and Steam Frame.
These products are console-like in presentation, but the Steam Machine and broader SteamOS platform remain PC-oriented and open in Valve’s stated sense. That means compatibility is not identical to a closed console’s guaranteed software support.

Valve’s original announcement placed all three products in an early-2026 release window. Later updates changed the practical buying picture.
Steam Machine: a compact SteamOS gaming PC
The Steam Machine is a roughly six-inch cube designed to bring PC gaming to a television without requiring a conventional tower. It runs SteamOS 3 and is intended to work particularly well with the new Steam Controller.

Valve says the Steam Machine is roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck. That is Valve’s broad comparison, not an independent benchmark. Valve also targeted 4K gaming at 60 frames per second using AMD FSR, with ray-tracing support. This should not be read as a promise of native 4K/60 in every demanding game.

Steam Machine price and availability
Steam’s U.S. hardware catalog lists the Steam Machine at $1,049, with a catalog date of June 22, 2026. The available catalog signal does not clearly identify which storage tier that price represents, so it should not be assigned to either the 512GB or 2TB model without checking the live product page.
The Steam Hardware community page also lists a 512GB Steam Machine and Steam Controller bundle at $1,128, but buyers should verify the exact configuration and contents at checkout. The catalog price is not enough to answer questions about noise, thermals, repairability, internal upgrades, included accessories, or game-by-game performance.
The Steam Machine is best understood as a compact gaming PC with a console-style interface—not as the cheapest possible way to play PC games. SteamOS compatibility still depends on Proton, anti-cheat support, third-party launchers, DRM, and individual game updates.

Valve calls the grip feature Grip Sense. It detects whether fingers are touching the rear grip sensors and can activate, suppress, or toggle gyro input. Gyro calibration is handled through the controller’s settings and layout tools.
The Controller can connect through Bluetooth or USB-C, while the included Steam Controller Puck acts as both a charging station and a dedicated wireless transmitter. That dedicated connection is intended to improve living-room stability and responsiveness compared with relying only on Bluetooth.
Valve claims up to 35 hours of battery life per charge. In practice, trackpads, haptics, gyro use, connection method, and settings can affect endurance.
Who should buy the Steam Controller?
The Controller is particularly useful for first-person shooters, strategy and management games, simulations, older PC titles, cursor-heavy interfaces, and games without good native controller support. Steam Input allows users to create or download layouts, but that flexibility also means some games require configuration.
It is less suitable for someone who wants a completely conventional, plug-and-play console controller or dislikes trackpads and gyro aiming. Grip Sense may also take adjustment depending on hand size and how a player holds the controller.
Steam Controller price and queue status
Steam’s U.S. catalog lists the new Controller at $99, with a catalog date of May 4, 2026. The price does not guarantee immediate delivery. Steam’s Hardware community page says reservations remain open and that some new reservations may not ship until 2027, depending on queue position. Existing reservations may show estimated windows such as September 2026, December 2026, or 2027.
Steam Frame: wireless VR and Steam streaming
Steam Frame is Valve’s wireless VR headset and a SteamOS device capable of more than traditional VR. It is designed for three use cases:

- Standalone play: selected compatible games can run directly on the headset.
- PC streaming: demanding VR or non-VR games can run on a Steam Machine or another PC and stream to the headset.
- Mixed Steam use: users can access both VR and conventional games through the same Steam-oriented device.
Reported specifications include a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, ARM64 architecture, 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, and 256GB or 1TB storage. The headset reportedly uses 2160×2160 LCD resolution per eye, an approximately 110-degree field of view, and a 72–144Hz refresh-rate range. The 144Hz mode has been described as experimental in some coverage.

These specifications should be treated as reported details until Valve’s final retail documentation establishes every configuration and regional specification.
How Steam Frame streaming is supposed to work
For demanding games, the headset can receive rendered video from a Steam Machine or another gaming PC. Eye tracking supports foveated streaming: the system can prioritize image quality where the user is looking instead of treating every part of the image identically.
Foveated streaming cannot remove network latency, wireless interference, PC performance limits, or video-compression artifacts. A strong home network remains important, and connecting the host PC by Ethernet is generally the safer arrangement for demanding streaming. A busy router, distant access point, or household network congestion can produce latency spikes and image degradation.
Steam Frame’s standalone capability also does not mean every Steam PC or VR game will run locally. Its ARM-based hardware, available memory, operating-system support, and game requirements can limit local compatibility. A title may work through PC streaming while remaining unsuitable for standalone play.
Steam Frame price and availability
Valve later announced that the Steam Machine and Steam Frame would ship in summer 2026. However, as of August 18, 2026, Steam’s hardware catalog still marks Steam Frame as “Coming soon.” The catalog does not establish a final public price or a complete retail order path, so buyers should not treat unofficial listings or speculative preorders as confirmation.

Valve said Steam Machine and Steam Frame would receive their own Verified classifications. Valve also said Steam Machine requirements are nearly identical to Steam Deck Verified and that games already running well on Steam Deck should generally run well on Steam Machine without additional developer work.

That is useful guidance, but it is not a universal guarantee. Verified labels concern the out-of-box experience and do not eliminate:
- Per-game graphics and performance differences
- Proton or driver regressions
- Anti-cheat restrictions
- Unsupported launchers and DRM
- VR-specific performance requirements
- The difference between PC streaming compatibility and standalone ARM compatibility
“Steam library” should therefore be read as access to a large PC-game ecosystem, not a promise that every title will install and work identically on every SteamOS device.

Valve’s larger strategy is a connected Steam ecosystem:
- Steam Deck: portable Steam gaming.
- Steam Machine: higher-powered play at home on a TV or monitor.
- Steam Controller: flexible living-room and PC input.
- Steam Frame: wireless VR and access to streamed PC games.
- SteamOS, Proton, Steam Input, and Verified labels: the software layer connecting the devices.
A typical living-room setup would pair a Steam Machine with the Controller Puck and Steam Controller. A VR setup could use Steam Frame with a wired host PC or Steam Machine, provided the network is fast and stable enough for low-latency streaming.
This ecosystem is most compelling for people already invested in Steam and willing to accept PC-style compatibility variables. It is less attractive to buyers who want guaranteed console support, immediate hardware delivery, or a mature standalone VR catalog.

What Valve still has not settled
- Steam Frame’s final price and full retail availability
- Regional launch dates, taxes, shipping, and inventory
- Independent Steam Machine performance testing
- Steam Machine noise, thermals, repairability, and upgradeability
- Exact storage-tier pricing and bundle contents
- How Steam Frame’s standalone game catalog will develop
The key distinction is between what Valve announced and what buyers can obtain today. The Steam Controller has a $99 catalog price but may involve a long queue. The Steam Machine has a $1,049 U.S. catalog listing, but configuration and performance details still matter. Steam Frame remains the least concrete product of the three despite Valve’s summer-2026 shipping window.
