Valve’s Steam Controller Is Here, but Steam Frame’s VR Launch Remains Uncertain

Valve announced the Steam Controller, Steam Frame VR headset and Steam Machine on November 12, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, the Controller has launched, while Steam Frame remains the uncertain part of the lineup: Valve has discussed a summer 2026 shipping window, but the evidence available here does not establish a confirmed retail launch date or final price.

The three devices are a connected Steam hardware strategy, not a two-product accessory bundle. The Controller is a general-purpose PC gamepad, Frame is a hybrid standalone and wireless PC-VR headset, and Steam Machine is the living-room PC endpoint.

The announcement in brief

Valve’s original announcement is dated November 12, 2025. It introduced all three products together in the company’s official news post: Valve’s Steam hardware announcement.

Product What it is Status by August 18, 2026
Steam Controller Wireless Steam Input gamepad with dual trackpads Launched May 4, 2026; reservations can extend into 2027
Steam Frame Standalone-capable VR headset designed primarily for wireless PC streaming Valve stated a summer 2026 shipping window; confirmed retail date and final price are not established here
Steam Machine Compact SteamOS gaming PC Part of the same 2026 hardware rollout and affected by memory and storage supply conditions

Valve initially described the hardware as coming in 2026, at first using an early-2026 target. Later statements changed the outlook for Frame and Steam Machine after shortages and higher memory and storage costs. The Controller was less exposed to those component constraints because it does not contain RAM or internal storage.

What the new Steam Controller does

The new Controller uses a familiar modern gamepad layout but adds two trackpads and deep Steam Input integration. Trackpads can provide mouse-like aiming, cursor movement, scrolling or custom touch menus, while every button and input can be remapped in Steam’s configurator.

Why the trackpads matter

  • Strategy and simulation games can use a trackpad for pointer movement while retaining physical buttons for shortcuts.
  • Shooters and older PC games can receive mouse-style controls without requiring a desk setup.
  • Virtual menus can expose many keyboard commands from a single controller surface.
  • Community layouts and per-game profiles can make the same hardware behave differently from title to title.

Valve’s design goal is broad Steam Overlay and Steam Input compatibility, not a promise that every Steam game will have an equally good default layout. A title may lack a comfortable community configuration, require manual remapping, or simply feel better with a conventional Xbox- or PlayStation-style pad.

Valve’s Steam Hardware hub includes tutorials covering trackpads, virtual menus and the Steam Input Configurator.

Launch and reservations

Valve launched the Controller on May 4, 2026. Demand exceeded initial supply, so reservations opened on May 8. The initial system required a Steam account in good standing, a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026, and limited customers to one controller. After an order email, the buyer had a 72-hour purchase period. Valve’s reservation announcement is at Steam Controller reservations.

Reservation estimates have included delivery by September 2026, by December 2026, or in 2027, depending on when the reservation was placed. Those windows are estimates, not a universal ship date. Independent coverage reported a $99 price; verify the live Steam listing before ordering because availability and regional terms can change. The official destination is Steam hardware.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Purple)

  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Who should consider it?

  • Good fit: Steam Input users, Steam Deck owners wanting a living-room pad, and players of strategy, MMO, simulation or older PC games.
  • Less suitable: buyers wanting a plug-and-play console controller, competitive players who dislike a different layout, or anyone unwilling to wait through a reservation queue.

A reservation is not an immediate order. You must wait for Valve’s email and complete payment within the stated purchase window.

What Steam Frame is designed to be

Steam Frame is best understood as a streaming-first hybrid headset rather than a portable replacement for a gaming PC. It runs a VR version of SteamOS and uses an evolved Proton compatibility layer with ambitions spanning Linux, Windows and Android games. Some software can run locally, but demanding PC-VR titles are expected to draw on a nearby gaming computer.

Wireless PC VR

The headset includes a wireless adapter intended to stream VR content from a gaming PC. This is local wireless streaming, not cloud gaming: the computer renders the game, encodes video, and sends it across the home network or Valve’s adapter to the headset. Router quality, interference, distance, congestion, PC encoding and the game all affect latency and image quality.

Frame uses inside-out tracking through onboard grayscale cameras, so it does not require external base stations. It can therefore remove the cable and room-mounted tracking hardware associated with a conventional Index setup, while still requiring suitable play space and reliable wireless conditions.

Eye tracking and foveated streaming

Eye tracking identifies where the user is looking. Foveated streaming can then preserve more detail in that region and transmit peripheral areas at lower detail, reducing bandwidth and rendering demands. It does not guarantee higher frame rates or eliminate latency; the result depends on the headset, PC, adapter, network, encoder and software implementation. Valve discusses the feature in its Steam Hardware FAQ and timing discussion.

  • Capacitive Touch Thumbsticks, gyro sensor, programmable buttons, & more
  • Also functions as an XInput controller for Windows 11/10 (wired mode only)
  • Compatible with Steam and Steam Deck

Controllers and non-VR games

Frame’s paired controllers use a split-gamepad arrangement: a D-pad is on the left controller and standard face buttons are on the right. Valve’s aim is for them to handle ordinary flat-screen games as well as motion-controlled VR software. That makes the headset more than a visor for SteamVR, but compatibility will vary by game and may require configuration.

Steam Frame versus Valve Index

UploadVR reported that Valve said Frame would replace Index in the company’s hardware lineup and that Index was no longer in production. That is a reported transition, not a guarantee that every Index accessory or base station will receive indefinite support.

Valve Index Steam Frame
Connection Tethered PC VR Wireless PC streaming plus optional local operation
Tracking External base stations Inside-out tracking with onboard cameras
Software concept SteamVR PC headset SteamOS-based hybrid headset with Proton-derived compatibility
Price information Its full-kit price is the comparison point Valve has not supplied a final price in the cited coverage

UploadVR reported that Valve aimed to price Frame below the Index’s $1,000 full-kit price, but that was a target rather than a confirmed MSRP. See UploadVR’s technical coverage.

Steam Frame versus Meta Quest

Frame’s apparent advantages are direct Steam integration, an open PC-oriented approach, wireless PC VR, eye-tracking-assisted streaming, and controllers intended for both VR and conventional games. Meta Quest has the more established standalone software and accessories ecosystem and is the safer choice for someone who wants a mature, immediately available catalog without owning a gaming PC.

Frame may be a poor match for a buyer seeking inexpensive, completely PC-free VR. Local mobile hardware will not provide desktop-PC performance for every demanding title, and the best experience may require a capable gaming PC, a strong wireless environment and patience with game-by-game compatibility. Final price, battery life, display, comfort, field of view and launch software support must be known before declaring a winner.

What changed after the 2025 announcement?

  1. November 12, 2025: Valve announced Controller, Frame and Steam Machine, initially targeting 2026 and first describing the timing as early 2026.
  2. February 2026: Valve said it needed to revisit Frame and Steam Machine timing and pricing because memory and storage were difficult and more expensive to obtain. Coverage is available from UploadVR.
  3. May 4, 2026: Steam Controller launched.
  4. May 8, 2026: Controller reservations opened after demand exceeded supply.
  5. Summer 2026: Valve publicly described Steam Frame and Steam Machine as shipping in summer. Road to VR reported the window.
  6. By August 18, 2026: SteamOS had preliminary support for the Frame wireless adapter, suggesting continuing launch preparation. That support is not proof that retail launch had occurred; see PC Gamer’s report.

What is still unknown

  • Steam Frame’s final price and exact retail launch date.
  • Regional availability and launch sequencing.
  • Final display resolution, refresh rate, battery capacity, play time, weight and balance.
  • The complete list of games that run locally and whether individual SteamVR games work without manual configuration.
  • Final wireless-adapter specifications and compatibility requirements.
  • Whether Frame will use a reservation system like the Controller.
  • Whether Valve will sell replacement or additional Frame controllers separately.
  • Long-term support for Index base stations and other existing accessories.

Should you wait?

Steam Deck owners

The Controller is the immediate option if you want more living-room control or trackpad-driven Steam Input profiles. Frame is relevant only if you also want VR and have, or plan to buy, a sufficiently powerful PC for streamed titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Existing Index owners

Frame is the prospective upgrade path if you want inside-out tracking and wireless PC VR. Wait for confirmed pricing, comfort data, compatibility information and independent testing before replacing a functioning Index setup.

Quest owners

Keep Quest if its standalone catalog and current availability matter most. Consider Frame when Steam integration, openness and wireless PC VR outweigh the value of Meta’s mature standalone ecosystem.

New VR buyers

Do not buy on the word “standalone” alone. If you lack a gaming PC or want a proven PC-free catalog, Quest is the lower-risk near-term choice. Frame becomes easier to evaluate once Valve publishes price, stock, battery and launch software details.

Living-room PC buyers

Steam Machine is the third part of Valve’s plan and may provide the local PC endpoint that makes Frame’s streaming concept most coherent. Its own pricing and availability were also affected by memory and storage costs, so treat it as a separate purchase decision.

The Bottom Line

The Steam Controller is a real, shipping product with unusually deep Steam Input capabilities, but reservations can extend into 2027. Steam Frame is the more ambitious device: a lightweight, inside-out-tracked headset combining local software with wireless PC VR. Until Valve confirms its price, retail date, inventory, battery and compatibility, it is a promising platform to monitor rather than a purchase that can be judged definitively.
