Players have reported a prompt saying Vanguard needs to be running, including during a match, but the phrase alone does not establish a specific cause or official error code.
What the “VANGUARD EVENT” post describes
In a May 25, 2024 post on r/riotgames, the author said a Vanguard Event message kicked them from a League of Legends game and made reconnecting difficult. Commenters described similar interruptions and raised concerns about possible penalties. These are player accounts, not an official Riot diagnosis.

What related player reports add
Posts from July and August 2025 used “Vanguard Event” for an in-game message saying Vanguard needed to be running. In some cases, the poster believed Vanguard was already running. The reports show that players have encountered similar wording; they do not prove that all occurrences share one cause.

Restarting the game or client
One player said leaving the game and restarting the client was the only workaround that helped them. That is an individual report, not a guaranteed fix.

Reinstalling Vanguard and the Riot Client
In a July 25, 2025 discussion, a poster said reinstalling Vanguard and the Riot Client did not resolve the issue. The same poster said Riot Support suggested allowing Riot game files through the computer firewall. The thread does not establish that this suggestion fixed the problem.
Running items as administrator
A commenter in another troubleshooting discussion said they had been advised to run items as administrator, but did not report a clear successful outcome. Treat this as an unconfirmed suggestion, not an established remedy.

What to do if you see the message
- Record the exact wording and when it appears. Note whether it occurs before launching a game or during a match, and whether Vanguard appears to be running. The wording is useful context, but it does not identify a confirmed root cause.
- If you are in a match, consider the reported restart workaround. One player said leaving and restarting the client helped them; other players may have different results.
- Use Riot Support for case-specific guidance. A firewall allowance was reportedly suggested by Support in one case, but the Reddit discussion does not provide a universal firewall procedure or show that it resolves the issue for everyone.
- Do not assume a reinstall or administrator launch will solve it. Players reported mixed or incomplete outcomes for these steps. Follow any instructions from Riot Support that apply to your system and situation.
What the reports do—and do not—confirm
- They document player-reported League of Legends interruptions involving Riot Vanguard.
