Varmilo Keyboard Buyer’s Guide: Choosing Among 2023 Models

For a dependable all-rounder from Varmilo’s 2023-era range, start with a VA87M-style tenkeyless (TKL) board: it keeps the function row, arrows and navigation keys while making more room for your mouse than a full-size keyboard. Choose a VA108M if you regularly use a numpad, a Miya Pro if desk space is tight, or an MA model if Varmilo’s electro-capacitive (EC) switches are the point. These older boards are generally wired and should not be assumed to offer USB-C, wireless, hot-swap or extensive remapping.

This guide focuses on the model families and choices relevant to 2023, then separates newer Varmilo generations so their features are not mistakenly attributed to older keyboards.

What Varmilo keyboards are best at

Varmilo is known for prebuilt keyboards with distinctive themed designs, substantial-feeling cases and, on many established models, PBT keycaps with dye-sublimated legends. Its appeal is the combination: a finished board with a recognizable look and a choice of typing feel, without requiring you to assemble a custom keyboard. The 2023-era lineup included multiple sizes and both conventional MX-style and Varmilo EC switch options. WePC’s 2023 buyer’s guide covers examples including the VA87M, MA87M Beijing Opera and Sakura designs; Varmilo’s Beijing Opera product description documents several of the relevant layouts and variants.

That design and typing focus does not automatically mean modern gaming features. On older models, connectivity, remapping, Mac behavior and whether switches can be replaced are specific to the exact model and revision. Choose the functional specification first, then the theme.

Quick recommendations by buyer

What you need Good direction Why it fits Check before buying
A general-purpose board for gaming, writing or coding VA87M, 87-key TKL Keeps F-keys, arrows and a navigation cluster without a numpad. Exact switch, connector, hot-swap status and Mac support.
A dedicated numpad VA108M for MX-style switches; MA108M for EC switches Full-layout or 110% models retain number-entry keys. Desk width, exact layout and switch system.
A compact board with dedicated arrows Miya Pro, 65%, 68 keys in the documented ANSI Beijing Opera version Uses less desk space while retaining arrow keys. F-row access, key placement, layout and replacement-cap compatibility.
Varmilo’s EC typing feel MA87M or MA108M These are EC-oriented wired options in the documented older range. EC is a distinct switch system, not a Cherry MX variant.
Wireless, USB-C or switch experimentation A newer model whose exact listing explicitly provides the feature Some newer families add combinations of wireless, Type-C and hot-swap. Do not infer those features from the Varmilo name or an older model’s appearance.

The specifications above describe model directions, not guarantees for every colorway or regional SKU. Varmilo’s model-family chart distinguishes older VA and MA families from newer families; the retailer’s individual listing should settle the exact configuration.

Choose the layout before the theme

65%: compact, with arrows

A 65% board is a sensible choice when desk space matters and you still want dedicated arrow keys. The Miya Pro Beijing Opera is described by Varmilo as a 68-key ANSI 65% model. The space savings come with compromises: there is no dedicated function row, and some navigation functions move to an Fn layer. The tighter layout can also make replacement keycap sets less straightforward than TKL or full-size sets.

80% / TKL: the safest starting point

The VA87M is an 87-key TKL model. It retains the function row, arrows and navigation cluster while dropping the number pad. That makes it a practical balance for gaming, programming and general desk use: the mouse can sit closer than it typically would beside a full-size board, but common keys remain directly accessible. If you are unsure which layout you want, TKL is the least disruptive place to start.

Full-size / 110%: for regular number entry

The VA108M is described as a full-layout keyboard, while the MA108M is a 110% wired EC model in Varmilo’s Beijing Opera description. A numpad is useful for spreadsheets, accounting and frequent data entry, and keeps the number keys directly available. The cost is desk width; for gaming, that can force the mouse farther outward. A TKL board plus a separate numpad is a more flexible option if you only need number entry occasionally.

What about 95%?

A 95% layout can appeal if you want a numpad in a smaller footprint, but the available evidence does not establish a specific 2023 Varmilo 95% model to recommend here. Do not assume a current compact-with-numpad product was part of the 2023 range; verify the exact model and generation.

VA, MA and newer Varmilo families

Similar names and themes do not make these boards interchangeable. The VA line is associated with conventional mechanical switch options; MA is the older EC-oriented family. Newer names represent different generations and feature combinations. Varmilo’s family chart separates VA, MA and later families, including distinctions in switch type, connectivity and hot-swap support.

Family or model What the documented version offers Best suited to Generation caution
VA87M 87-key TKL; Cherry MX options; older examples are wired, use Mini-USB and are not hot-swappable. Someone who wants a traditional TKL and familiar MX switch choices. Switches and specifications vary by SKU; check the exact listing.
VA108M Full-layout wired model in the documented Beijing Opera description; Cherry MX variants. Frequent numpad users who prefer MX-style switches. Do not transfer one colorway’s connector or options to every variant.
Miya Pro 68-key ANSI 65% in the documented Beijing Opera version, with several Cherry MX options. Compact use with dedicated arrows. Switch selection and layout are variant-specific.
MA87M / MA108M Wired EC models in TKL and 110% sizes; the documented examples use Mini-USB. Buyers specifically interested in Varmilo EC switches. EC is distinct from conventional Cherry MX; check the exact revision.
VEA87 / VEA108 V2-family examples; the VEA87 retailer listing identifies Cherry MX options, white LED and no hot-swap. Someone considering a later wired Varmilo TKL. Not interchangeable with VA87M; the VEA87 details do not establish every VEA model’s features.
VEM, VPE, VPT and other later families Features vary. Varmilo’s current chart shows newer family combinations that can include Type-C, wireless or hot-swap. Buyers seeking newer connectivity or modularity. Verify the full model name and revision rather than assuming a family-wide feature.

For example, MechanicalKeyboards.com’s VA87M Chicken Dinner listing identifies Cherry MX options, Mini-USB and no hot-swap, while its VEA87 Charcoal listing describes a V2 example. A theme name alone is not enough to identify the board’s internals.

Pick a switch by feel, sound and weight

Switch names describe broad behaviors, not a complete typing experience. Spring weight affects how much force a key takes; keycaps, stabilizers, case and desk also affect the sound. If you type heavily, compare the specific spring weight rather than choosing only by a color name. Older VA-series retailer listings show that a given Varmilo model could be offered with several Cherry MX options, but availability varied by listing and variant.

Linear: smooth travel without a bump

Linear switches move without a tactile bump. They are often chosen for gaming and repeated presses, but a light linear switch can be easy to press accidentally if your fingers rest heavily on the keys. Cherry MX Red, Black, Silent Red and Speed Silver appeared among options on documented Varmilo listings. See the Chicken Dinner VA87M listing for an example of model-specific switch choices.

Tactile: feedback without a deliberate click

Tactile switches provide a noticeable bump but do not make the distinct click associated with a clicky switch. They can be a useful typing-and-gaming compromise. Cherry MX Brown and Clear options appear on the documented VA87M Beijing Opera listing.

Clicky: audible feedback

Clicky switches combine tactile feedback with an audible click. Some typists enjoy that clear sound, but it is a poor match for shared offices, quiet rooms or a microphone nearby. Cherry MX Blue was among the documented options for Varmilo variants. If other people share the room, choose a non-clicky switch instead.

Silent: reduced, not absent, noise

Silent switch variants are designed to reduce switch noise, but no keyboard is universally silent. Keycap impact, stabilizers, desk resonance and typing technique still make sound. They are a better starting point for a shared space than clicky switches, not a guarantee of inaudibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Varmilo EC: a separate switch system

Varmilo EC switches are not simply another Cherry MX option. The MA87M Beijing Opera is described with Varmilo EC V2 switches, and Varmilo distinguishes its EC models from Cherry MX versions in its Beijing Opera product description. Choose an MA model if you specifically want that EC typing system; do not buy it expecting an ordinary MX-compatible switch.

If you cannot try switches in person, tactile or a light linear option is a reasonable first shortlist, depending on whether you prefer feedback or smoothness. Avoid clicky switches if noise is a concern. A switch choice at checkout is not evidence that the keyboard can later accept other switches.

Gaming, programming and office use

Gaming

A conventional wired Varmilo can serve well as a gaming keyboard, and TKL is especially convenient when you want more room for mouse movement. A 65% board saves still more space but puts function-row actions behind an Fn layer. Full-size remains usable, though its numpad can push the mouse farther away.

Do not treat appearance or brand identity as proof of competitive performance. Older Varmilo models may lack gaming-oriented software, rapid-trigger behavior, analog input or flexible remapping. If a specific latency, firmware or remapping feature matters, require documentation for that exact model rather than inferring it from the switch or theme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Programming and office work

For programmers who regularly use F-keys and navigation keys, TKL avoids much of the layer use required by a 65% board. Full-size is the more natural choice for heavy numerical work. In an office, favor silent or non-clicky switches when noise could bother colleagues. Check the legends and layout as well as the theme: compact boards can relocate familiar keys, and a pretty keycap set is not a substitute for a layout you can use comfortably.

Windows, macOS and Linux compatibility

Compatibility labels can mean different things. Varmilo’s Beijing Opera description says the VA87M and VA108M are fully compatible with Windows but only partially compatible with macOS, noting that shortcut keys are not supported. That does not necessarily mean letter typing fails on a Mac; it means you should not assume Windows and Apple shortcut behavior is identical. Modifier placement or behavior may require adjustment in macOS, and the board’s legends may not match your expected Command and Option positions.

Retailer specifications for a VA87M Beijing Opera example list Windows and Linux compatibility, but that is not proof that every model or revision behaves identically. If you use a Mac daily, prefer an exact SKU with explicit Mac or dual-mode documentation, and verify modifier behavior and shortcuts in the manual before buying. A retailer’s “Mac compatible” label may only establish basic input, not Apple-specific legends or complete shortcut support.

Connectivity, hot-swap and remapping

Wired versus wireless

Wired USB was common on established VA87M, VA108M and MA examples. Some documented older VA and MA models use Mini-USB, while newer Varmilo families offer different combinations of Type-C, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz. The official model chart shows why connectivity needs to be checked by family and revision rather than assumed for the brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a desktop gaming setup, wired is straightforward. For a laptop, tablet or multi-device desk, wireless can be useful, but confirm whether the exact model supports Bluetooth, 2.4GHz or both, and whether it has a wired fallback. Mini-USB is not automatically unusable, but check the included cable and whether you are comfortable keeping an older connector in service.

  • Full 6063 aluminum CNC case with anode oxidation and electrophoresis
  • Connect 3 ways- wired with USB-C cable or wirelessly with Bluetooth 5.0 or 2.4 GHz
  • Polycarbonate plate and FR4 PCB
  • Leaf spring gasket mount
  • Several layers of sound absorption: 3* layers Poron foam, 2* layers PET foam, 1* layer IXPE foam

Hot-swap is not the same as choosing switches at purchase

Older VA87M examples are listed as not hot-swappable. Changing switches on a fixed-switch board generally requires desoldering; a hot-swap board lets you replace switches without soldering, provided the switch and socket are compatible. A selectable switch option at checkout only means the board can be ordered with that switch—it does not make the PCB modular. If experimenting with switches is a priority, buy a model whose exact listing explicitly says hot-swappable.

Remapping and software

Do not assume QMK or VIA compatibility, macros, RGB control or extensive remapping without model-specific documentation. Varmilo’s newer models may have different controls and features from older VA or MA boards. If you rely on custom layers or shortcuts, make documented firmware support a buying requirement; QMK/VIA-oriented alternatives may be a better match.

Keycaps, themes and backlighting

Many established Varmilo models use PBT keycaps, and Varmilo describes high-grade PBT on several Beijing Opera variants. PBT is a material, not a guarantee that every board has the same texture, profile or legend quality. Dye-sublimated legends are a common way to put durable designs on PBT, but the exact keycap set remains model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check ANSI versus ISO: the Miya Pro Beijing Opera example is ANSI; do not assume every regional listing uses the same layout.
  • Check the bottom row and key count: nonstandard sizes can limit compatible replacement sets, especially on compact boards.
  • Separate illumination from shine-through legends: a lit area under opaque keycaps does not necessarily make the legends easier to read. A reviewer comment on the VEA87 Charcoal listing notes that opaque caps can limit white backlighting’s usefulness for legend visibility; treat that as an observation about that example, not a universal test of every Varmilo keycap.
  • Buy the specification before the colorway: a theme may be discontinued or sold only in a particular layout, switch or connector configuration.

What changed after the 2023-era boards?

Varmilo’s current range includes families beyond the older VA and MA models, with some newer models combining features such as Type-C, Bluetooth, 2.4GHz and hot-swap. Those capabilities belong to the specific newer models that list them; they should not be projected backward onto a VA87M or MA87M. Check Varmilo’s current family chart and the individual product specification for the exact revision.

If buying new now, consider a newer Varmilo only when it provides the feature you need and the exact listing confirms it. The Minilo 75 product page is one example of a current product page, not evidence that the Minilo was part of the 2023-era VA/MA range. If you want the classic look and wired typing experience, an older board may still suit you; check stock, return terms and the condition of the specific listing.

When another keyboard is a better fit

Varmilo makes the most sense when the design, keycaps and prebuilt typing feel matter more to you than deep programmability or modular upgrades. The alternatives depend on which trade-off you want to avoid:

  • More wireless, USB-C or hot-swap choices: compare exact Keychron models; the feature set varies by model.
  • Understated design and traditional typing focus: consider Leopold.
  • Conventional enthusiast prebuilts: compare Ducky.
  • Custom printed keycaps and configuration options: consider WASD.
  • Layers, macros and firmware control: look at QMK/VIA-compatible boards.
  • Established gaming software, profiles or RGB controls: Logitech or Razer may be a closer fit, though their priorities differ from Varmilo’s design-led approach.

These are qualitative directions, not model-for-model performance or price rankings. Compare the actual board, layout, switches and software you would buy.

Checklist before ordering

  1. Write down the full model and revision. VA87M, VEA87 and VEM87 are not interchangeable names.
  2. Confirm the layout. Check key count, ANSI or ISO, and whether you need a numpad or dedicated function row.
  3. Select the switch deliberately. Identify linear, tactile, clicky, silent or EC, and check the specific spring weight if it matters.
  4. Verify connectivity. Confirm wired or wireless, the connector type, Bluetooth or 2.4GHz support, and whether a cable is included.
  5. Check hot-swap separately. Do not confuse pre-purchase switch selection with the ability to replace switches later.
  6. Confirm operating-system behavior. For Mac use, check modifier keys, shortcut support and any required mode or remapping.
  7. Check keycaps and lighting. Verify theme, layout compatibility, backlight type and whether legends shine through.
  8. Review the exact retailer listing. Older designs may be out of stock or discontinued; compare warranty, return policy, shipping and any import costs before checkout.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
