vaudio_miles.dll is a Valve Source 1 game DLL used for audio and voice features. It belongs with the game, SDK, or mod that installed it, not with Windows, DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, or your graphics driver.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching description:
- The file is missing or the game will not start: verify the affected game or SDK through Steam.
- The game runs but says “Voice disabled”: verify the installation, then check whether antivirus quarantined the DLL.
- You see
RIB_request_interfaceor another entry-point error: restore the matching Source build. Do not download a replacement DLL. - The error appeared after manually copying files or installing a mod: remove the substituted files and restore the original game or SDK files.
- Windows Security removed the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC after repairing the game.
- The problem began after a driver or system change: consider System Restore, but do not start by reinstalling audio or graphics drivers.
What vaudio_miles.dll is and where it belongs
vaudio_miles.dll is an app-local audio and voice module for Valve’s Source engine. The name refers to the Miles Sound System, middleware used by games for audio playback and voice functions.
You may encounter it in Source SDK Base, Portal 2, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, and other Source-engine games or mods. A normal location resembles:

The exact folder depends on the product. A mod may depend on the base game’s engine files, or it may have its own bin directory.
Do not treat every copy as interchangeable. Different Source products and builds can contain different file sizes, interfaces, dependencies, and architectures. Older Source games are commonly 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows.
Fix 1: Verify the affected game through Steam
This is the safest and most likely repair for a missing or corrupted file.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game or SDK.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game without the mod first, if possible.
Steam should reacquire files that are missing or fail validation. Test the game from its normal Steam shortcut. If it launches, test the mod afterward.
If the verification completes but the error remains, check the exact executable and installation path. You may be repairing one Steam library while the launcher uses another. Also check whether the mod has a separate bin directory.
For a non-Steam installation, use the original installer’s Repair option, the vendor’s launcher repair function, or reinstall the original game or SDK. Do not download only vaudio_miles.dll.

Fix 2: Repair an antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an unfamiliar game DLL, but do not assume that is what happened.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
vaudio_miles.dll. - Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate game or SDK installation.
- Review the detection name and timestamp.
- If the file is clearly from the genuine installation and the detection is a false positive, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow instructions.
- Run Steam’s file verification again.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. A malicious file can use the same name. If antivirus removes the file again, update its definitions and submit the detection to the security vendor for review. Do not permanently disable protection to run a DLL from an unknown source.

This error usually means the DLL exists but does not match the executable or another engine component:
The procedure entry point RIB_request_interface could not be located
in the dynamic link library ...binvaudio_miles.dll.
Common causes include:
- Copying
binfiles from another Source game - Installing old or leaked engine files
- Mixing mod files with a different base-game version
- Replacing
mss32.dllor another related component separately - Supplying the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build
The repair is to restore the complete matching installation:
- Close the game, mod launcher, and Steam.
- Remove manually substituted files from the affected game or mod directory.
- Run Steam file verification for the base game and SDK.
- If the mod has its own installer, reinstall the mod from its official distribution.
- Launch the unmodified base game.
- Reinstall or update the mod only after the base game works.
Do not try several random versions of vaudio_miles.dll. An entry-point error is a compatibility problem, not proof that the newest-looking DLL is correct.
Fix 4: Check the architecture and folder
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Source game. That game still needs the architecture shipped with the game.

Do not copy a replacement into either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows system components. The names are also confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
The correct location is normally the game’s own bin folder. Windows searches application locations for application DLLs, and the Source engine expects its modules beside the relevant game files.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. vaudio_miles.dll is an engine module loaded by Source, not a COM component that becomes usable through registry registration.

It may produce an error about a missing entry point, or it may create confusion without fixing the game. Restore the complete game or SDK installation instead.
Fix 6: Do not install unrelated runtimes first
There is no evidence that Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET installs vaudio_miles.dll.

Install a runtime only when the error names that runtime or the game’s official requirements call for it. Installing every Visual C++ package, legacy DirectX package, or .NET version is unlikely to restore this app-local Source file.
Likewise, Device Manager is not the right first repair. Updating an audio, graphics, or chipset driver will not normally recreate vaudio_miles.dll. Use Device Manager only when you also have a separate hardware or driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Use the manufacturer’s official driver source if Windows cannot find a suitable update.
- Restart Windows and retest the game.
Guessing which of many installed drivers is stale can take longer than checking each device manually. Fix 7: Repair Windows only when other components are failing
vaudio_miles.dll is not normally protected by Windows, so SFC does not usually restore it. Use Windows component repair when several unrelated Windows components are damaged, Windows updates fail, or other system files show errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the game still cannot find vaudio_miles.dll, return to the game installation rather than repeating system repairs.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Use System Restore only when the error began immediately after a driver, installer, update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart and test the game.
System Restore does not replace the need to verify the game files. If the DLL was already missing from the installation, Steam or the original installer must restore it.

How to tell what failed
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vaudio_miles.dll was not found”: the file is missing, blocked, or not in the directory expected by the executable.
- “Unable to load voice codec DLL … Voice disabled”: the game may still start, but its voice subsystem could not load the module.
RIB_request_interfaceerror: the file is present but incompatible with the executable or a related Source component.- “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”: suspect corruption, an incorrect architecture, or a mismatched build.
- Error after manual replacement: restore the complete original installation rather than replacing one file again.
When asking for support, provide the exact game or mod, the full path shown in the error, the complete error text, the last update or installation change, any antivirus event, and whether files were manually copied.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Do not download vaudio_miles.dll from a random DLL catalog or copy a file supplied by another user. The file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Source build, or depend on different versions of related files. A replacement can also hide the real installation problem.
