vbacv20.dll is a legacy Microsoft component associated with VBA Converter (2.0), usually installed by an older Office/VBA-based application. It is not a normal Windows system DLL, so the safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program.
What vbacv20.dll is
The filename is associated with older Visual Basic for Applications components, particularly legacy Office installations and applications that embedded or licensed VBA functionality. Microsoft distinguishes VBA from the separate Visual Basic 6 runtime, although both belong to an older 32-bit software ecosystem. Microsoft’s VB6 and VBA support policy
| File detail | What you can reliably conclude |
|---|---|
| File | vbacv20.dll |
| Role | VBA Converter 2.0 component |
| Publisher | Historical association with Microsoft, but the exact file’s publisher should be verified on your copy |
| Category | Application component, not a protected Windows component |
| Architecture | Public metadata identifies it as 32-bit |
| Common historical location | C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6 |
| Version and size | Recurring third-party metadata exists, but there is no current Microsoft version table or standalone download |
The reported folder is a likely historical location, not a universal installation path. A third-party application may instead keep the DLL in its own installation directory.
Errors caused by vbacv20.dll
Windows may show one of these loader messages:
The program can't start because vbacv20.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
This application failed to start because vbacv20.dll was not found.
Error loading vbacv20.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because vbacv20.dll was not found.
vbacv20.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
These messages do not always mean the named file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found vbacv20.dll but could not load one of its dependencies.

The exact application cannot be identified from the filename alone. Note which program, shortcut, document, or installer triggers the message before changing files.
First, identify the parent application
Do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL. Find the executable that is requesting it.
Check the error window
The title bar or message may identify the failing application. If the error appears while opening an old spreadsheet, database, document converter, accounting package, engineering tool, or business program, that application is the likely owner.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target.
- Record the application folder and executable name.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
If the error appears when opening a particular document, close the document and launch the parent application directly. This separates an Office startup problem from a document-specific add-in or macro problem.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the application, Microsoft Office, or an older VBA-enabled suite.
- Select the entry and look for Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
If several Office versions are installed, note which one the failing program requires. Side-by-side Office installations can share older VBA components, and removing one installation can leave another application incomplete.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
Repairing the parent program restores its files, installation paths, and supporting components together. This is more reliable than copying one DLL.
Repair a modern Office installation
- Save your work and close every Office application.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Quick Repair and choose Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application that produced the error.
If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. Online Repair may reinstall more of Office and can take longer. Microsoft documents this workflow in Repair an Office application.
Repair an older MSI-based Office installation
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the relevant Microsoft Office entry.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the wizard and restart Windows.
For a third-party application, use its own installer or launcher:

- Select the affected program.
- Choose Modify or Repair, if available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original vendor installer or legitimate installation media.
- Launch the program again.
A successful repair normally removes the loader message and allows the original executable to start. If the same message appears, confirm that you repaired the exact application named in the error rather than a different Office installation.
Fix 2: Reinstall from the original media
If the DLL disappeared after uninstalling Office, cleaning old files, restoring a backup, or migrating between Office versions, reinstall the program that originally supplied it.
Use, in order of preference:
- The original Microsoft Office installation media
- The official Office installer associated with your license
- The original software publisher’s installer or recovery media
- A legitimate archived installer supplied by the publisher
An installer restores more than vbacv20.dll. It may also install registry entries, companion files, licensing components, and the correct 32-bit application environment.
Office 2003 is unsupported. Keeping it on an internet-connected computer creates a legacy-software security problem, so isolate the system or consider moving the workload to a supported application where practical. Microsoft’s support material documents the old Office support status here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined or deleted the component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the program stopped launching.
- Expand any detection related to the application or DLL.
- Confirm the file path and detection name.
- Do not restore it automatically if the origin is unclear.
Only consider restoring the file when it came from a trusted, legitimate installation and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. Protection History guidance.
The safer approach is usually to reinstall the parent application from trusted media, then run a complete scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Choose Scan now.
If malware is suspected, do not download a replacement DLL before scanning the system.

Public file metadata identifies vbacv20.dll as a 32-bit component. A 32-bit program can require 32-bit VBA files even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Windows supports many such applications through WOW64, but a 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 merely because Windows is 64-bit. Do not assume SysWOW64 is the correct destination either. The installer must place the component where the parent application expects it.
For an old program that still fails after a legitimate reinstall:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try Run this program in compatibility mode for an older Windows version only if the software publisher recommends it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program.
If the application requires a particular 32-bit Office edition or an obsolete operating environment, a supported replacement, isolated virtual machine, or vendor-provided compatibility guidance may be necessary.
Fix 5: Determine whether a dependency is missing
If vbacv20.dll exists but Windows reports “The specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency or an incorrect installation path.
Check the application’s logs:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and error code.
Also check the program’s installation folder and any vendor-generated repair log. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages unless the error specifically identifies one of those runtimes. Those packages are unrelated to the VBA Converter component in normal cases.
What about Windows Features
Windows Features will not normally install legacy VBA files, but checking them can rule out an unrelated application requirement:

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a first response
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general DLL repair command. A runtime or helper component may load directly without being registered.
If the original software documentation explicitly requires registration, use the command from that documentation and the correct regsvr32 architecture. For a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration utility is normally:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "fullpathvbacv20.dll"
For a 32-bit Windows installation, it is normally:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "fullpathvbacv20.dll"
Run Command Prompt as administrator before using either command. If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that is evidence the DLL is not registerable this way. Stop there and repair the parent application instead.
Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows damage
vbacv20.dll is not known as a protected Windows system component. Therefore, SFC may report no problems even when this DLL is missing.
Use these tools when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed Windows components, or system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
Run DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files; they will not normally recreate a missing legacy Office DLL.
If repeatedly hunting through repair commands is taking longer than the underlying diagnosis, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or chipset driver is not a normal cause of a missing VBA DLL. Consider driver work only if the same application also crashes with display, hardware-acceleration, or device errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, or the device category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, use the PC or hardware manufacturer’s official support channel for a compatible driver. Do not replace vbacv20.dll with a driver package.
When several devices may have stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify them instead of making you hunt through hardware pages; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that owns vbacv20.dll.
Fix 9: Try System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an uninstall, cleanup utility, update, or other known change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. It may not restore a complete application installation, so reinstall the parent program if the error remains. Microsoft describes the recovery choices here.

What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL from a random site
Unofficial DLL downloads may contain malware, a mismatched build, an incorrect architecture, or a modified file. Even an authentic-looking copy may not fix missing installer entries, companion files, licensing components, or dependencies.
There is no current official Microsoft standalone download for vbacv20.dll. Obtain it through the original Office or application installer instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not universal DLL storage locations. Forced copying can hide the real installation problem and make troubleshooting harder.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET do not normally provide this VBA Converter component. Install them only when the actual application error identifies a dependency from one of those runtimes.

Is vbacv20.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence shows that it ships as a protected Windows component. It is associated with an older application or Office/VBA installation.
Is it part of Visual Basic 6?
It is related to the legacy VBA ecosystem, but VBA and the Visual Basic 6 runtime are distinct technologies. Do not assume installing the VB6 runtime will restore this file.
Is vbacv20.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata identifies it as 32-bit. The correct copy must match the program that loads it, not simply the bitness of Windows.
Will regsvr32 vbacv20.dll fix the error?
Usually not. Registration only applies when the DLL exports DllRegisterServer and the application requires registration. Repair or reinstall the parent program first.
What if I no longer have the original installer?
Contact the software publisher for legitimate recovery media or a supported replacement. A standalone DLL is not equivalent to the complete installer.
When should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them for broader Windows corruption, not as the primary fix for this application DLL. If SFC reports no violations, that does not prove vbacv20.dll is present.
The file exists, but the program still will not start. What now?
Confirm which executable reports the error, check Event Viewer and application logs, verify that the file came from a trusted installer, and investigate dependencies or 32-bit compatibility. A reinstall of the exact parent application is still the most reliable next step.
