“vbios.dll is missing,” “vbios.dll was not found,” and “vbios.dll could not be loaded” usually indicate a damaged or incomplete installation of an older MSI hardware utility.
The file is associated most consistently with MSI GreenPowerCenterII and Dual Core Center, programs used for hardware monitoring and configuration. It is not established as a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or standard graphics-driver file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches what you see:
- The error appears when an MSI utility starts: repair or reinstall that MSI program.
- The error started after removing MSI software: uninstall the remaining utility and its startup entry, or reinstall it before removing it completely.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error appears at Windows startup, but no program opens: inspect startup apps and scheduled tasks for a leftover MSI utility.
- The error appears in an unrelated application: verify the exact filename and the program displaying the message. It may be a similarly named DLL.
- Windows itself has several damaged-component errors: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate a missing third-party MSI DLL.
- You no longer use MSI overclocking or monitoring software: uninstalling the obsolete utility is usually safer than restoring its DLL manually.
Do not begin by downloading vbios.dll from a random DLL website or copying it into System32. That can provide the wrong version or architecture, introduce malware, and leave the damaged parent installation unresolved.
1. Identify the program requesting vbios.dll
Before changing anything, find out when the error occurs.

Check the exact message
Note:
- The complete error text
- The program or window showing it
- Whether it appears during startup or only after launching an application
- The path named in the message, if one is shown
- Whether the name is exactly
vbios.dll
Do not continue with this guide if the message names GVBIOSLib.dll, FBIOS.dll, VBIO.DLL, or another file. Similar names can belong to different products.
Search installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for GreenPowerCenterII, Dual Core Center, or an MSI hardware-monitoring or overclocking utility.
- Select the three-dot button beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for the same MSI utility names.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and inspect the installed-program list.
If the error appears immediately after sign-in, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and look for an MSI utility or an unknown entry whose file location points to an old MSI folder.
2. Repair the MSI utility
Repair is the safest first fix when you still need the program.
Use Windows application repair
If the program offers a repair control:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the MSI utility.
- Select the three-dot button.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the MSI utility again.
Windows may not show Repair for older desktop installers. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the MSI program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the computer.
If Repair is unavailable
Download the utility only from the official MSI support page for the exact computer, motherboard, or graphics-card model. MSI distributes older utilities through model-specific support pages, so selecting a similar model can provide an incompatible package.
Use the model’s Support > Download > Utility area. Then:

- Dual core center
- MSI Afterburner Overclocking Utility
- Low Profile Design-One slot thermal and low profile design work perfect with slim or smaller system
- Military Class Concept Components
- Download the installer intended for your Windows release and hardware model.
- Close monitoring, overclocking, and graphics utilities.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- If the installer offers Repair, use it.
- Otherwise uninstall the existing MSI utility first, restart, and run the installer again.
- Restart Windows after installation.
The repair worked if the MSI program opens without the DLL message and its monitoring or configuration controls function normally. If the installer reports that the program is not supported on the current Windows release, uninstalling the legacy utility is usually the better path.

A clean reinstall is appropriate when repair completes but the error remains.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove GreenPowerCenterII, Dual Core Center, or the MSI program named by the error.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Program Files and Program Files (x86) for a leftover folder belonging to that utility.
- Do not delete a folder if you are unsure which program owns it. Confirm the name first.
- Download the correct installer from the official MSI support page for your model.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation and restart again.
Older utilities may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. That is not automatically a problem. Install the package intended for the product rather than copying a catalog copy of vbios.dll between System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders serve different purposes, and manually mixing DLLs can create additional loading errors.
If the software is no longer available for your model or repeatedly fails on the current Windows release, remove it and use the current MSI-supported utility or Windows hardware-management features instead.
4. Decide whether uninstalling is the correct fix
vbios.dll is associated with an application, not shown to be a Windows-protected component. If you do not use the MSI utility for fan control, monitoring, power profiles, or overclocking, uninstalling it may resolve the problem more safely than restoring an obsolete file.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the MSI utility.
- Select the three-dot button and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Disable any remaining entry for the removed utility.
- Check Task Scheduler by searching for it from Start.
- Review Task Scheduler Library for a task clearly belonging to the old MSI program. Disable it first rather than deleting it immediately.
- Restart and confirm that the message no longer appears.
If the error disappears after uninstalling the parent utility, the missing DLL was being requested by leftover MSI software rather than by Windows.
5. Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an application DLL. Do not immediately restore it based only on its filename.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries matching
vbios.dllor the MSI utility. - Expand an entry to see its detected path and action.
- Confirm that the original path belongs to the legitimate MSI installation.
- Scan the original installer before running it again.
Restore or allow the file only when its origin, path, signature, and installer are trustworthy. If Defender identifies it as a threat or the file came from an unexpected temporary folder, leave it quarantined and reinstall the MSI utility from its official source instead.
A legitimate application DLL normally belongs in the parent program’s installation directory, historically reported for GreenPowerCenterII under an MSI program folder. A copy in a random temporary directory or an unexpected Windows directory should not be trusted merely because its name is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Verify the file if it is already present
If a copy exists, inspect it before allowing an application to use it.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Open Details and review the description, product name, and publisher fields.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present, and inspect the signer.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender from the context menu.
- Compare the path with the MSI utility’s installation directory.
Third-party catalogs have reported details such as a 32-bit build, a particular version, and a small file size, but those values are not confirmed MSI release metadata. Do not use catalog-reported numbers as proof that a downloaded copy is genuine.
7. Repair broader Windows component corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful when Windows has several system errors, failed updates, or damaged built-in files, but they normally will not recreate vbios.dll inside an MSI application folder.
Install pending Windows updates first:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands complete.
Run DISM before SFC, as Microsoft recommends. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows again. If the vbios.dll message remains but the rest of Windows works normally, return to the MSI repair or uninstall steps.

Reinstalling the MSI program remains the definitive fix when that program is the file’s parent.
8. Update or reinstall related drivers carefully
vbios.dll should not automatically be treated as a graphics-driver DLL, and updating a driver will not necessarily restore it. Driver work becomes relevant when the MSI utility fails alongside graphics-device errors, display problems, or an incomplete hardware-software installation.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device-status error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the device has an error icon, select Uninstall device only when you have the correct replacement driver ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the graphics driver from the computer, motherboard, or graphics-card manufacturer.
Do not flash a graphics-card VBIOS or download a VBIOS ROM to fix this DLL error. The name is similar, but vbios.dll is a Windows user-mode library, not a graphics-card firmware image.
If manually identifying old hardware drivers is taking longer than the MSI reinstall itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Use the manufacturer’s driver package when the MSI utility is tied to a specific model.
9. Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command.
It works only when the DLL provides the registration entry point required by Windows, such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that vbios.dll requires or supports manual registration.
Do not run these commands merely because a download page recommends them:
regsvr32 vbios.dll
regsvr32 /u vbios.dll
Registering an ordinary application DLL will usually produce another error or change nothing. It also does not restore a file that is missing. Use the original MSI installer instead.
10. Remove a stale startup reference
If you uninstalled the MSI software but the error still appears at sign-in, Windows may be trying to launch an old startup command.
Check these locations:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable entries that clearly belong to the removed MSI utility.
- Search Start for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks that launch an MSI monitoring or overclocking executable.
- Disable a clearly obsolete task.
- Restart Windows.
If the message stops, the DLL itself was not needed by Windows. A leftover startup task was calling a removed program.
Frequently asked questions
Is vbios.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Public file inventories most consistently associate it with MSI GreenPowerCenterII or Dual Core Center.

- Digital maximum resolution: 7680 x 4320
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no established evidence that it belongs to those Microsoft runtimes. Reinstalling them is not the first repair for this file.
Where should vbios.dll be located?
It should normally be in the installation directory of the application that uses it, historically an MSI GreenPowerCenterII program folder. It should not automatically be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Can I download the DLL separately?
That is unsafe and usually does not fix the underlying problem. The correct source is the original MSI installer or an official recovery package for the exact hardware model.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling MSI software?
The uninstall may have removed the DLL but left a startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or related MSI component that still tries to load it. Remove the stale reference or complete the uninstall.
Should I repair Windows with SFC?
Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader corruption. They are secondary steps for vbios.dll because this file is associated with third-party application software.
Is vbios.dll a graphics-card BIOS file?
No. Despite the name, it is a Windows DLL. A graphics-card VBIOS is firmware stored and handled differently.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the error continues after reinstalling?
Confirm the filename, inspect the triggering program, check Defender Protection history, review startup tasks, and verify that the installer matches the exact MSI model. If the old utility is unsupported on the current Windows release, uninstall it and remove its remaining startup references.
