Other variants include “Error loading VBoxHook.dll” and “VBoxHook.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” These are representative Windows loader messages, not proof that Windows itself owns this file.
vboxhook.dll is a genuine Oracle VirtualBox Guest Additions Windows DLL. The safest fix is to reinstall the matching Guest Additions inside the affected Windows virtual machine.

Which fix applies to you
- The error appears inside a Windows virtual machine: Reinstall Guest Additions from the host’s matching
VBoxGuestAdditions.iso. This is the most likely solution. - The host VirtualBox was recently upgraded: Update Guest Additions inside the VM so host and guest versions match.
- The file was quarantined: Check Windows Security Protection history, then reinstall Guest Additions from the official ISO.
- The error appears on a physical PC after VirtualBox was removed: Look for an orphaned startup entry, scheduled task, or application still calling an old VirtualBox path.
- The file exists but still will not load: Check guest architecture, dependencies, corruption, and the directory named by the error.
- Windows has several unrelated repair symptoms: Run DISM and SFC after repairing Guest Additions, not instead of it.
What vboxhook.dll is
Oracle’s source describes this component as a global Windows hook DLL. It helps Guest Additions track windows and the active desktop, including functionality used by VirtualBox seamless windows. It is a user-mode DLL associated with VirtualBox, not a Windows inbox file, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, or standalone kernel .sys driver.
Guest Additions are installed inside the guest Windows system. The VirtualBox host supplies the installation media, normally VBoxGuestAdditions.iso, from the host installation. The usual installer on the mounted disc is VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe.
Oracle’s Guest Additions documentation explains the ISO and installer arrangement. Oracle’s VBoxHook source header identifies the hook DLL’s role.
Historical Guest Additions installers commonly placed the file under the Windows system directory, often:

The exact path can vary by Guest Additions release and guest architecture. Do not treat the presence of a file in System32 as proof that it is a Microsoft file.
Fix 1: Reinstall matching Guest Additions
This is the repair to try first when the error occurs in a VM.
1. Start the affected virtual machine
Boot the Windows 10 or Windows 11 guest far enough to reach the desktop. If the missing-DLL message appears during startup but Windows remains usable, close the message and continue.
2. Insert the Guest Additions image
In the running VM window, select:
Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image
If VirtualBox asks to download or locate the image, use the ISO supplied with the host’s VirtualBox installation. The host does not need Guest Additions installed for itself. Guest Additions belong in the guest.

3. Run the installer in Windows
Open File Explorer and select the mounted CD under This PC. Run:
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe
Accept the normal upgrade or repair path. Allow Windows to install the accompanying Guest Additions components if prompted, then restart the guest when the installer finishes.
4. Check the result
After rebooting, repeat the action that produced the error. A successful repair usually means the application starts without the loader message and VirtualBox integrations such as shared clipboard, display resizing, or seamless windows work normally.
If the installer refuses to run, restart the guest and mount the ISO again. Also confirm that the ISO matches the host VirtualBox version. Oracle recommends keeping Guest Additions at the same version as the host for the best results.

Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit guest, or use an old DLL solely because the filename matches.
Fix 2: Repair a host and guest version mismatch
A common trigger is upgrading VirtualBox on the host while leaving older Guest Additions inside one or more VMs.
Start the VM, then choose:
Devices > Upgrade Guest Additions
If that option does not complete the repair, use Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image and run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe manually as described above.
To identify the host version, open VirtualBox Manager and select Help > About VirtualBox. Compare that release with the Guest Additions image you mount. Avoid mixing a current host installer with an unrelated old ISO unless the guest is an unsupported legacy Windows installation that requires an archived compatible release.

Oracle’s official VirtualBox download page provides the current host packages and Guest Additions media. Use Oracle’s official archive when a legacy guest requires an older matching release.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate file after an installation or update.
In Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
VBoxHook.dllor VirtualBox. - Review the detected path and action.
Microsoft documents this workflow in its Protection History instructions.
Restore the file only if the path belongs to a legitimate Guest Additions installation and you can verify that it came from the official Oracle ISO. Reinstalling Guest Additions from the matching ISO is safer than adding a permanent antivirus exclusion.
If the file is located in a strange user-download directory, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application folder, do not restore it automatically. Scan the system and investigate the parent program.
Fix 4: Check the file path and architecture
A file can exist while Windows reports it as missing. The loader may be unable to find a dependency, may be loading from the wrong directory, or may be rejecting the file because its architecture does not match the calling program.
In File Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect its Location and Digital Signatures tabs if present. A legitimate copy should be associated with a real VirtualBox Guest Additions installation, not an arbitrary DLL collection.
Also check whether the guest is 32-bit or 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
The Guest Additions installer is the correct way to select matching x86 or x86-64 files. Manual copying should be limited to controlled recovery using a file extracted from the exact official ISO and matching the guest architecture.

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Oracle DLL, so use them after reinstalling Guest Additions when Windows shows other corruption symptoms.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected program again. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends this DISM-before-SFC order.
If Windows reports that corruption was repaired, reboot before testing. If SFC cannot repair everything, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the commands. Persistent system corruption may justify System Restore through Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can be tedious when you do not know which component changed. Although vboxhook.dll is a user-mode Guest Additions hook DLL rather than a standalone kernel driver, its failure can appear alongside an incomplete Guest Additions installation or related VirtualBox integration components.
Try the official repair first. If the installation fails:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand System devices, Display adapters, and any VirtualBox-related categories.
- Right-click a clearly identified VirtualBox device.
- Select Uninstall device only if you are prepared to reinstall Guest Additions immediately.
- Restart the VM.
- Mount the matching Guest Additions ISO.
- Run
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exeagain.
Do not uninstall random chipset, graphics, storage, or audio devices while chasing this filename. For a physical PC with broader driver symptoms, obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer and use Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates where appropriate.
When several devices have stale versions, manually identifying the correct package can mean checking hardware IDs and comparing installers. Fix 7: Remove an orphaned reference outside a VM
If the error appears on a physical Windows installation, do not assume Windows is missing a system file. Possible causes include a stale VirtualBox startup entry, a leftover Guest Additions installation, another program explicitly loading the DLL, or malware.
Check startup commands from PowerShell:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
- Run:
Get-CimInstance Win32_StartupCommand |
Select-Object Name, Command, Location |
Format-List
Look for commands referencing an old VirtualBox directory. Also inspect:

- Task Manager > Startup apps
- Task Scheduler Library
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps for leftover VirtualBox components
Remove the obsolete parent application or startup entry. Do not download a replacement DLL and place it in System32.
If the file exists with no legitimate VirtualBox installation, run a full Windows Security scan. An unexpected path, unknown signature, or unexplained program loading the file is more concerning than a normal missing file inside a VM.

Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 VBoxHook.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the Windows registration entry points required by that utility. Oracle’s documented repair path for Guest Additions is the installer, not manually registering this hook DLL. Registration will not repair a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged installation, or stale startup command.
Do not download vboxhook.dll by itself
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible VirtualBox release. Even a clean-looking copy may not fix the installation that originally loaded it.
Use the matching VBoxGuestAdditions.iso supplied with VirtualBox, then run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. If you need an older release for a legacy guest, use an official Oracle package rather than a standalone DLL archive.
FAQ
Is vboxhook.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an Oracle VirtualBox Guest Additions component. It is not a Microsoft system DLL or Visual C++ Redistributable file.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
Usually neither manually. Historical installers commonly used the Windows system directory, but the correct location varies by release and architecture. Reinstall Guest Additions so the installer places the matching files correctly.
Does installing Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Normally no. Microsoft’s Visual C++ packages provide files such as vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe; they do not provide VBoxHook.dll.
Does the host need Guest Additions?
No. The host supplies the ISO. Guest Additions are installed inside each Windows VM that needs them.
What if the error says “the specified module could not be found” even though the file exists?
That wording can indicate a missing dependency, wrong bitness, or an application searching the wrong directory. Reinstall the matching Guest Additions package and check the full path and guest architecture.
