Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Update: Verizon’s Stadia promotion has expired, and Google shut down Stadia on January 18, 2023. You cannot redeem the offer or activate Stadia today. In January 2020, however, Verizon offered new Fios Gigabit customers a Stadia Premiere Edition bundle with a white controller, Chromecast Ultra and three months of Stadia Pro.
What Verizon offered
The promotion reported on January 21, 2020, was scheduled to begin January 29. The bundle was described as a $129 value and included:
- A white Google Stadia Controller
- A Chromecast Ultra for playing on a television
- Three months of Stadia Pro
It was not a permanent Stadia subscription, an unlimited game library or a traditional game console. Stadia games still depended on Google’s cloud service and, in many cases, had to be purchased separately. The package details and stated value were reported by Droid Life.
Who qualified?
Surviving contemporaneous coverage identifies new Verizon Fios Gigabit customers as the eligible group. It was not a general Verizon Wireless benefit, and the available report does not establish that every existing Fios subscriber qualified automatically.

The original Verizon announcement link, verizon.com/about/news/verizon-google-offer, now returns a 404 page. As a result, the surviving report does not allow the exact redemption deadline, inventory limits, upgrade rules, geographic availability or account restrictions to be confirmed.
What did “free” mean?
The hardware was offered as an incentive for taking qualifying broadband service, not as a cost-free standalone gaming system. The Fios Gigabit package was reported as starting at $79.99 per month in January 2020. Customers therefore had to commit to internet service, with the final economics potentially affected by taxes, installation, equipment charges, promotional-period rules and cancellation terms.
The $129 figure was Verizon’s or the report’s stated retail value for the Stadia package. It was not a guaranteed $129 saving: someone upgrading to Gigabit only for the bundle could spend substantially more on broadband than the stated hardware value.

What Stadia Pro included in 2020
At the time, Stadia Pro was Google’s paid tier. The promotion’s three-month period was associated with:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- A rotating selection of included games
- 5.1 surround sound
- Streaming up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, where supported by the game, connection and display
Those were historical capabilities, not features of a current service. Stadia Pro did not mean every Stadia title was included, and it did not provide offline play.
Was it a good deal?
Good fit in January 2020
- You already planned to order Fios Gigabit.
- You wanted a Chromecast Ultra and were interested in trying cloud gaming.
- You accepted an internet-dependent service and Stadia’s game-purchase model.
Weak fit in January 2020
- You would upgrade to expensive Gigabit service only to obtain the bundle.
- You wanted a large, all-you-can-play subscription catalog.
- Your connection, Wi-Fi coverage or data allowance was unreliable.
Gigabit capacity could help a household stream games, but it could not eliminate latency from distant servers, congestion or wireless interference. The controller and Chromecast also were not equivalent to a console with local processing.

Why Verizon and Google partnered
The arrangement plausibly served both companies: Verizon could make its fast Fios service more attractive, while Google could put Stadia hardware in homes with a strong wired connection. That is strategic analysis rather than a verbatim statement of either company’s motives; Verizon’s original announcement is no longer available to document the rationale directly.

Google announced on September 29, 2022 that it would wind down Stadia. Access ended on January 18, 2023. Google said it would refund Stadia hardware purchased through the Google Store and games and add-ons bought through Stadia. The shutdown announcement is documented in Google’s official message on Stadia’s streaming strategy.
That makes the Verizon offer historical only: the promotion cannot be claimed now, and Stadia hardware is no longer a route into a functioning Google cloud-gaming service.

What can replace Stadia today?
There is no identical successor, but two current models address different needs:
| Service | Best for | How it differs from Stadia |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Pass | Players who want a subscription catalog with cloud gaming on supported devices | Primarily a catalog model; games, tiers, regions and availability vary over time |
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW | Players who already own compatible PC games | Streams supported titles from connected PC storefronts rather than a closed Stadia store |
| Verizon Fios | Households that need new fiber broadband for gaming and other traffic | Connectivity only; current plans and incentives are different from the 2020 Stadia promotion |
Choose internet service for your household’s broader needs, not to chase an expired giveaway. Check each provider’s current device, game, region and pricing requirements before subscribing.
