The safest fix is to identify the program showing the error and repair or reinstall that program from its original installer. Do not download a loose copy of the DLL and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
What vfp8cht.dll belongs to
The file is identified as Microsoft Visual FoxPro 8.0 Resources and is associated with Microsoft Visual FoxPro. The cht portion indicates a Traditional Chinese resource variant. It is generally an application resource file used alongside the Visual FoxPro executable and runtime files, not a component that Windows installs for every user.
Microsoft’s archived FoxPro file tables list vfp8cht.dll with the Visual FoxPro 8 executable and other localized runtime files. The tables include different FoxPro 8 builds, including 8.0.0.3121 and 8.0.0.3402, so there is no single DLL version that is correct for every application. A FoxPro application may also use files such as:
vfp8r.dll: the core Visual FoxPro 8 runtimevfp8rcht.dll: a localized FoxPro runtime resourcevfp8enu.dll: an English resource filevfp8t.dll: another related FoxPro runtime component
The exact combination depends on how the application was built and which language resources it uses. Replacing vfp8cht.dll with one of these files is not a safe substitute.
Errors caused by vfp8cht.dll
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because vfp8cht.dll was not found.”
- “The file vfp8cht.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: vfp8cht.dll.”
- “Error loading vfp8cht.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because vfp8cht.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application was unable to start correctly.”
The message does not identify the original developer of the application. The DLL name tells you that Visual FoxPro 8 is involved, but it usually cannot tell you which program installed it. Several unrelated business, database, inventory, accounting, or custom utility applications can use the same runtime.
Also, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that vfp8cht.dll itself is absent. It can mean that Windows found the named file but could not load one of its dependencies.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on the installer.
This is the primary fix because the application owns the runtime files.
Identify the application
- Read the complete error window and note the program name.
- If the name is not shown, close the message.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- In File Explorer, open that folder and check whether
vfp8cht.dll,vfp8r.dll, or related FoxPro files are present.
Do not delete or rename files in this folder yet. Back up the application’s data first, especially if it stores databases, configuration files, or user records beside the executable.
Use Windows’ repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no repair option, open the application’s installer from its original media and look for Repair, Modify, or Maintenance.
Reinstall from trusted media
If repair does not restore the file:
- Back up the application’s data.
- Find the original installer, deployment package, or installation media.
- If the program is managed by an organization, ask the administrator for the approved installer.
- Uninstall only the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Reinstall the complete application, including its runtime or language components.
- Start the program and confirm that the original error is gone.
Do not install only a similarly named DLL from another computer. The application may require a matching vfp8r.dll, language resource, configuration entry, or additional dependency.
If the application was simply copied from another computer, that is likely the problem. Copying an executable and a few visible files may omit the runtime package, registry settings, configuration files, or dependencies. Run the application’s installer instead.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Security software can quarantine an old FoxPro DLL, particularly when the file is located in an unusual application directory.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry that names
vfp8cht.dllor the affected application folder. - Select the entry to view its path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- the application came from a trusted original source;
- the detected path belongs to that application;
- the vendor or administrator confirms the file is expected;
- the detection has been determined to be a false positive.
- After restoring it, update or reinstall the complete application rather than relying on the loose restored file.
- Start the application again.
If the detection is not clearly a false positive, do not restore the file. Obtain a clean copy through the original installer and ask the application vendor or security administrator to review the detection.
Fix 3: Verify the application’s files
Time needed: 5–20 minutes.
Some launchers and managed applications include a file-checking feature.

The exact steps depend on the application. Start its launcher, open the application’s menu or settings, select the verification option, and allow it to replace missing or damaged files. Restart the application when the process completes.
This is safer than downloading vfp8cht.dll manually because the launcher can restore the correct build and the rest of the application’s runtime set.
Fix 4: Install the matching Visual FoxPro runtime
Time needed: 10–30 minutes if a trusted runtime package is available.

A program built with Visual FoxPro 8 may require a redistributable runtime rather than the full Visual FoxPro development environment. These are different things:
- Visual FoxPro development environment: the complete product used to create and maintain FoxPro applications.
- Visual FoxPro runtime: the redistributable components needed to run a compiled FoxPro application.
- Language resource files: files such as
vfp8cht.dllthat provide localized resources. - Application files: the executable, databases, configuration files, and vendor-specific components.
Install the runtime package supplied with the affected application or provided by its vendor. Match the application’s FoxPro generation, language resources, architecture, and service-pack level.
Visual FoxPro is retired software. Microsoft’s lifecycle page records the end of extended support for Visual FoxPro 9.0 as January 13, 2015, and Visual FoxPro 8 is also legacy software. Microsoft does not provide a current, universal standalone vfp8cht.dll download channel. See the Microsoft Visual FoxPro lifecycle information.
Microsoft’s old Visual FoxPro security packages are not generic missing-DLL repair tools. For example, KB2708940 addresses Windows common controls for Visual FoxPro 8 SP1. It should not be treated as a direct installer for vfp8cht.dll.

If the vendor gives you a runtime installer, use that installer rather than extracting one DLL. If no trusted installer remains, contact the vendor or administrator and preserve the original application in an isolated legacy Windows environment instead of obtaining an unsigned binary from a random archive.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Visual FoxPro 8 applications and runtimes are legacy 32-bit software. A 64-bit installation of Windows can normally run them through WOW64, but that does not mean you should use a 64-bit replacement DLL.
Do not copy the file into System32 or `SysWOW64 merely because Windows is 64-bit. Those folders are Windows loader locations, not general-purpose storage for application files. The correct location is determined by the application’s installer and deployment design.
To check the operating system architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
To check whether the application is using a 32-bit executable:

- Start the application.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Locate the application process.
- On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with “32” or “*32”.
Architecture alone does not identify the correct FoxPro build. Use the runtime supplied with the application.
Fix 6: Use compatibility settings only after reinstalling
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Compatibility settings cannot recreate a missing DLL, but they may help an old program run after its complete runtime has been restored.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version recommended by the application vendor.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
If the program requires elevated access, use the vendor’s instructions before enabling Run this program as an administrator. Avoid changing several settings at once because that makes later troubleshooting harder.
Fix 7: Check Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–30 minutes.
vfp8cht.dll is normally an application-owned FoxPro file, not a protected Windows system file. Therefore, System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management usually cannot restore it.
Use these commands when Windows also reports damaged protected files, Windows features fail, or other system components are malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected application.
Microsoft documents these commands in its Windows repair guidance and explains System File Checker in its SFC documentation.
Repeatedly running SFC or DISM will not replace an application’s missing FoxPro runtime. If both commands complete successfully but the same error remains, return to the application installer.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
Graphics, chipset, storage, and other drivers do not normally install vfp8cht.dll, so driver updates are not a primary repair for this error. Consider them only if the same computer also has device failures, crashes, storage errors, or other applications failing.

For a specific device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a known driver package, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not remove working drivers just because the FoxPro application reports a missing resource.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft does not establish that vfp8cht.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Do not use this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 vfp8cht.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the correct FoxPro runtime is installed.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command, while its DllRegisterServer documentation describes the registration entry point that a DLL must provide.
Common causes and the corresponding fix

Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables are related to this particular error. Install those only when the affected application’s documentation specifically requires them.
If the error changes to “not designed to run on Windows”
That message can indicate:
- a damaged DLL;
- a mismatched FoxPro build;
- wrong architecture;
- an incompatible language resource;
- a damaged dependency;
- incomplete copying of the application.
It is not proof that Windows owns the file. Reinstall the complete application and confirm that all related runtime files come from the same trusted package.
What to do when reinstalling does not work
Collect the following information before escalating:
- The complete error text.
- The application name and executable name.
- The full installation path.
- Whether the application was recently updated, moved, or copied.
- Whether antivirus software quarantined a file.
- Whether the application is 32-bit.
- Any second DLL named after the first error.
- Whether the application works on another managed computer.
Then contact the application vendor or administrator. Ask for the exact Visual FoxPro 8 runtime package and language resources required by that application.
If the original installer is unavailable, do not substitute a random DLL archive. Preserve the application data and consider running the complete legacy application in an isolated, managed Windows environment. A complete known-good application package is safer and more maintainable than assembling FoxPro files one at a time.
FAQ
Is vfp8cht.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Visual FoxPro 8 and normally belongs to an application or its runtime deployment. It is not normally supplied by ordinary Windows installations.
Can I download vfp8cht.dll by itself?
You should not. A loose download can have the wrong build, language, architecture, or malicious modifications, and it may leave other FoxPro dependencies missing. Use the original application installer or a runtime package supplied by the application vendor.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
